The list of word walls you will not be sent to includes the following, most of which have an associated quest. In addition to those listed here, no Dawnguard or Dragonborn word walls will ever be targeted by this quest except Arcwind Point.

After you use a dragon shout in a settlement, a courier will find you and give you a Letter from a Friend, which provides the location of a word wall when you read it. Traveling to the location and learning the Word of Power from the wall completes the quest.

This quest can be repeated multiple times, and can also be active simultaneously with the other quest to locate word walls, The Words of Power. Both quests can even point you to the same word wall as the other.


  • This quest can be triggered while shouting in a dungeon, not only in a settlement. Oddly, it can possibly even direct you to the same dungeon where you used the shout. The bug below may occur if the shout is used in the dungeon before finding the word wall in that same dungeon.
    •   The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 2.1.1, addresses this issue. The quest will no longer be triggered by shouting in uninhabited locations; and specifically, only habitations/dwellings/military encampments will trigger it.


  • This quest may point you to a word wall that you have already visited, in which case your quest marker will lead you to a word wall with chanting and sound effects as though there were a word to learn on it, however none of the words will be highlighted. This prevents you from completing the quest and from obtaining another quest to find a word wall.
    •   Use the console code SetStage WICastMagic04 200 to complete the quest.
  • Sometimes when going to the word wall, the word will not even appear even though you don't have it yet. This can be fixed by reloading a previous save.

  • The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 0, 255.
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage WICastMagic04 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest WICastMagic04.
