Cadwell

Sir Cadwell of Codswallop is a cheerful and endearingly mad lost soul who resides in Coldharbour. He is the oldest of the Soul Shriven, and was already insane even before he left Tamriel. He is a pivotal character in the Main Quest as well as the Coldharbour invasion quests. Cadwell regards himself as a daring knight, and has spent so much time in Coldharbour that he has become a part of the realm, teleporting around at will and viewing Tamriel as only a pale reflection of his home. He has a pet bantam guar called Honor, though according to him, it is his noble steed.

At the conclusion of the Main Quest, Cadwell becomes a servant of Meridia and gives you the Cadwell's Silver and Gold quests. Cadwell returns to Nirn and assists in the dragon outbreak in Northern Elsweyr. To his dismay he plays a pivotal part in the events.

In the base game he wears a full set of light Soul-Shriven style armor, with a Breton sword. In the Elsweyr chapter he can be seen wearing his signature kitchen-themed armor.

In addition to the above, Cadwell is associated with the yearly Jester's Festival event.

Soul Shriven in ColdharbourEdit

Cadwell will first be encountered in the Wailing Prison, playing the lute and surrounded by Soul Shriven by a campfire. As you approach, he will be regaling the surrounding Soul Shriven with a short ditty.

Cadwell: "One fine day in the middle of the night, two dead kings got up to fight. Back to back they faced each other, drew their bows … and stabbed themselves!"

You can then speak with him.

"Hello, what's this? Out for a stroll, then? Lovely day for it."
You must be Cadwell.
"Sir Cadwell, yes indeed. A pleasure!
And fair Lyris! Good to see you, m'dear! How are you, then?"
Lyris and I are trying to gain entry to the Prophet's cell, and the door is sealed.
"Oh dear, oh dear. Well, that is inconvenient, isn't it?
Tell you what—I happen to know another way in! Much more of a scenic route. Rather a fun little jaunt, actually. Full of traps, and corpses, and nasty beasties filling up the bits in between."
How do we get through all of that?
"Rather cautiously, I expect.
Watch your step, hold your nose, and do mind the traps. There'll like as not be a fair dose of running and skull-bashing as well."
Where's the entrance?
"Follow the river. You'll find the door to the Undercroft at the water's end. Once you're inside, stick to the light and you'll find a ladder that will take you right up to the Prophet, straightaway.
Do give him my best!"
Thanks.

You may also inquire him about certain topics:

"Best of luck. Do check in now and again, won't you?"
Tell me about yourself, Sir Cadwell.
"Well, there's not much to tell, is there? It's the same old pish-tosh. Gallant knight, epic quests, rescued maidens.
I came to this land when my head was quite unceremoniously separated from my body. Bad luck that, but you make the best of things."
How long have you been here?
"Oh, quite a long time. In fact, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if I was the oldest of the Soul Shriven. Of those who didn't go feral, that is.
I know every tunnel and path, every nook and cranny. The others look up to me, I suppose."
How do you know Lyris?
"Ah, Lyris. Girl's as mad as Sheogorath's jammies. Heart's in the right place, I suppose. Says she's got to rescue the Prophet to save us all from eternal torment. How an old blind man could do that is quite beyond me!"
What do you know about the Prophet?
"An Imperial gentleman. Apparently he was once a powerful mage, but the years haven't been kind.
Lyris says he knows of a path back to Tamriel. I rather think that if one existed, I'd have found it by now."
You don't think there's a way to get home?
"I hadn't actually given it much thought. Anything's possible, I suppose.
Truth is, I've been here so long, this place feels like home. But a good uprising now and again is a pleasant diversion, so where's the harm, eh?"

Castle of the WormEdit

After you free him from Warden Cornexius, he'll say:

"I say, jolly good timing. Lyris, enchanted, as always. And you—you're looking fit for someone so … how can I put it? Deficient in the soul department?"
Sir Cadwell? What are you doing here?
"Wherever the forces of evil prey upon the innocent, wherever souls are stolen and bodies shriven, wherever a people cry out for justice, there goest I!
I mean, this whole eternal servitude business is rather nasty, don't you agree?"
We need to find a way into the castle.
"Dibella's garters, why? Lovely grounds, no question. But it's positively brimming with angry cultists carrying rather large weapons!"
We need to rescue Abnur Tharn. It's complicated.
"I see, I see. A rescue, is it? Well, that's a different kettle of fish, isn't it? Hmm.
There is a cistern that drains into the waterway. The door is locked, but that's not stopped me before. Why don't you meet me there and we'll see what's what?"
Thank you, Sir Cadwell

Once you catch up with him in the Castle Cistern, he'll say:

"You keep up nicely! I can't abide dawdlers."
What's next?
"This whole bloody castle sits on top of an ocean of unstable Oblivion-whatsit. The Daedra use pipes to control the flow of it all and it comes out as steam."
Go on.
"Well, most of the doors in here are sealed with pressure from that steam. It's all rather complicated, but in a nutshell—if I can tamper with the pipes, we can open the doors to the inner keep and you can slip inside."
What do you need from us?
"Well, I can handle the tinkering, but you'll have to keep the beasties off me. It will be quite a romp!
Are you game?"
I'm game. Let's go.

He'll then rally you and Lyris:

Cadwell: "Onward! Ha ha!"

And if you happen to speak to him while trekking through the dungeon, he'll gleefully cheer:

"High steps! Come on!"

He will then work on the pipes and call out in succession:

Cadwell: "Don't worry, this will get you inside with a minimum of fuss."
Cadwell: "One more after this one."
Cadwell: "This should do it!"

After the last pipe, he'll say:

"There you are! Quick as you please. There's even time for tea."
Thanks.
"A pleasure. Think nothing of it. The merest trifle. Truly.
You'll find this Tharn fellow at the top of the Tower of Bones. You'll need to make your way through the keep's heart to get to it, but it's not terribly far."
What is he doing up there?
"I understand the King of Worms has set him to the task of inspecting the soul gems that find their way into the castle—which is to say, well … all of them. You'll see crates of the things scattered around the premises."
You should come along. It might be good for you.
"Indeed? Well, I might just take you up on that.
But safety first! I'll stay here for the nonce and make sure nothing comes to bugger up our little adventure from behind."
Thanks, Cadwell.

Speaking to him after the conversation:

"Well, don't dally about here, you've got a princess to rescue. It was a princess, wasn't it?"

As you reach the end of the dungeon, Cadwell will appear once more to open a gate from the other side:

Cadwell: "Hello again! Need a way out?"
Cadwell: "I'll have that open in just a moment."

If you speak to him, he'll reply:

"Arkay preserve us, you're as battered and bruised as a peach in a sack of rocks! Bit of the old derring-do, was it?
No matter. You'll be needing an escape route, no doubt?"
Great timing, Cadwell.
"It's what I do, quite honestly.
We should probably hurry it up. The entire castle is as bristly as a sack of sewing needles after all that noise."
Why don't you come with us?
"Come with you? You mean leave Coldharbour? Well, I don't know. It's been a very long time since I've seen the world I left behind.
Do you think it's wise?"

Cadwell goesEdit

You should come along. It might be good for you.
"Well, that's settled, then. And after all, you do need someone to lead you out of here.
Onward!"
Let's go!

He'll then lead you to the exit and say:

Cadwell: "Into the chute! Come on!"

Cadwell at the Harborage

Before you talk to Abnur in the Harborage, Cadwell will be at a campfire:

"Another important strategy meeting, is it? Excellent! Do pop by and say hello after you finished, won't you?"

After concluding the quest at the Harborage, he'll remark:

"I say, you do get into some wild adventures, don't you?
This place is so odd. Did you know that the fire here is actually warm? Brilliant!"

Cadwell staysEdit

The world is in a terrible place right now. Perhaps it isn't the best way to see it.
"Well, that wouldn't do at all. And it's not so bad here, actually. Oblivion has its charms, doesn't it?
Go on, you scamps. There's a grate just ahead that leads down to the rubbish tip. Do mind that first step, though!"
Good luck, Sir Cadwell.

Speaking with him after this exchange:

"Well, go on then. No worries, I'll be fine. They haven't made a cage that can hold this knight. Not yet, at any rate."

Harborage DialogueEdit

If you've brought him back from Coldharbour during The Castle of the Worm, he can be spoken to:

"This cave is quite lovely, but have you seen the nightmarish landscape outside? How do you people keep your sanity?
I believe I'll just remain indoors. Do let me know if I'm needed for anything heroic, won't you?"

If you completed The Tharn Speaks and return back to the Harborage before Varen summons you to the next quest, you will find Cadwell warming himself at the fire:

"You know, Tharn's not such a bad chap, once you get beyond the sour expression and the condescending attitude. And the sarcasm, of course. That's rather a bother.
Come to think, he is a bit of a twit, isn't he?"

After returning from the Halls of Torment:

"I understand you visited the Halls of Torment? Marvelous place. Marvelous. I'm not a fan of the tortured screaming, but otherwise it's quite lovely."

After the Valley of Blades:

"You're a fan of poetry, aren't you? How's this, then?
As I was going out one day
My head fell off and rolled away,
But when I saw that it was gone,
I picked it up and put it on!
I rather like that one."

Upon returning from Sancre Tor:

"Sancre Tor? Never been there, but I understand it's where the Reman dynasty is entombed.
Why do people even bother burying remains anymore? Seems rather a waste of time these days, what with everyone popping up from their graves. Cremation, I say!"

Before the meeting in Council of the Five Companions:

"They're having an important meeting and asked if I'd give them some privacy. I mean, do you believe it? Where's the trust? Pop on out to the rubbish tip, Cadwell, there's a good lad. Do I mind? Oh, I have no mind. I'm the village bloody idiot!"

After Council of the Five Companions:

"So, going toe-to-toe with the big bad then, are you? Smashing! Good luck to you!
This whole Planemeld thing seems like nasty business. I prefer my Coldharbour with a bit less Tamriel in it, thank you very much!"

ColdharbourEdit

The Weight of Three CrownsEdit

Once you step into the portal created by Vanus Galerion, you will find yourself in front of a large, locked door in Coldharbour. It will become clear that no one else from the invasion force is with you. Soon you will see Cadwell running towards you.

Cadwell: "Hello, what's this?"

When you speak to him he will clap due to your apparent survival.

"Survived then, have you? Jolly good, jolly good."
Where is everyone.
"Rotten luck. They arrived in Coldharbour, but in entirely different locations. Bloody unpredictable, portals to Oblivion. Not to mention Molag Bal's defenses.
Nasty beasties abound. Off you go. Over the bridge and head inland. There's a good chap!"

The Hollow CityEdit

After the bad news, he continues speaking. If you didn't start the quest, he will say:

"Ah, what a beautiful day!"

Speaking to him:

"Welcome back to Coldharbour, old chum. Jolly good to see you! I was afraid you'd snuffed it."
What's across the bridge?
"What bridge? Is there a bridge? Tricky things, bridges. Tend to have all kinds of hideous creatures living beneath them.
Except that one over there. That one leads to the Hollow City."
The Hollow City?
"Dreadfully dull place. And a real eye sore, if you ask me, but I suppose it's where you'll want to start your quest.
Quest. What a simply fabulous word. Quest. Quest. Quest. I just love how it rolls off the tongue."
Right. I'll head to this Hollow City.

After learning about the existence of the city, you can ask Cadwell about your current location and Cadwell himself.

"Welcome back to Coldharbour, old chum. Jolly good to see you! I was afraid you'd snuffed it."
Where am I, exactly?
"Welcome to the beautiful gardens of Coldharbour! Do have a look around. Lovely day for it. Soak up the ambiance, the grandeur, the wonder of it all!"
Tell me about yourself, Cadwell.
"I have the oddest feeling we've discussed this before. Or did I already mention that? No matter.
I am Sir Cadwell the Undaunted, Knight of the Court of Coldharbour, Champion of Chivalry, Defender of the Defenseless, Shepherd to the Soul-Shriven."
What are you talking about?
"Am I not speaking the common tongue of Nirn? I was once fluent, but time does get on, doesn't it?
I'm sorry, I forgot the question. Though I'm quite sure I already answered it. You really should pay more attention."
You mentioned a bridge?
"Did I? I don't recall that. There is a bridge just ahead. Leads to the city. Rather a drab, empty place at present, but a little paint, a potted plant or two ….
And honestly, it's not like you've got a lot of choices right now. So, off you go!"
Are you insane?
"Sane? That's in the north, isn't it? I don't believe I've had the pleasure."

Cliffs of FailureEdit

Arriving upon completion of the quest, he will appear out of a portal:

Cadwell: "Where in blazes is everyone? This should be the right spot …."

Speaking to him:

"Stand back, vile beast, lest I slay you in no uncertain terms!
Oh, it's you. Taking a stroll, then? Enjoying the beautiful countryside?"
I'm trying to rescue people.
"And you're doing a smashing job of it! Jolly good!
Wait a moment. Did you go through that portal? Did you meet the Observer?"
I did.
"Jolly good! I've always wanted to play the Observer's game. But now that you've done it, I suppose there's no point, is there? I'm sure I'll find some other quest to occupy my time.
So, where were we? Why did I come here, again?"
To lead the people I rescued back to the city.
"Brilliant! Just great! Truly! I wish I'd thought of it.
Off with you, then. I'll make sure everyone arrives safe and relatively sound in the Hollow City."

The Library of DuskEdit

After you have spoken with Telenger the Artificer at the camp and completed The Library of Dusk, Cadwell will appear out of a portal.

Cadwell: "Ah, the good ol' library! Read many of the books here myself. I love the ones with all the pictures in them."

You can then speak with him to see what he is here for.

"Ah, there you are! The Groundskeeper said you had a pickup. I assume she was talking about this merry band?
Good to see them alive and well. They are alive… right? Not that I mind the odd zombie. It's the smell I can't abide. Nasty, that."
They're exhausted, but they're alive.
"Yes, whenever I visit a library and do some reading, I usually fall right to sleep. Can't keep my eyes open. Great for when I get insomnia.
But enough about my sleeping habits! I shall do my heroic duty and bring them back to the city unharmed."
Make sure they get back in one piece.
"No worries there. Almost all the people I've traveled with over the years have remained in one piece for the duration. I've seen the odd dismemberment, but that's far more the exception than the rule."

Special BlendEdit

Once you have freed the tavern's patrons, Cadwell can be found outside on the porch.

"Found the old Everfull Flagon, eh? Interesting place, the Flagon. Glad someone's finally got it sorted out. Good show!"
The Everfull Flagon patrons need to get to the Hollow City.
"Smashing idea. Really excellent. They'll be safe there.
How about that thane? Excellent mead, certainly, but I always thought he was a bit dodgy."
Why didn't you try to help the patrons?
"One must choose one's battles, mustn't one? Rescuing maidens, fighting injustice—those are my specialities [sic]. But taking mead away from drunken Nords? I mean, really. That way lies madness."
Can you help these people get to the Hollow City?
"Righto! Always happy to pitch in. Lend a hand. Steer a course. Make a difference.
I'll get them to the Hollow City. Very nice inn there. Plenty of mead. They'll feel right at home."

Light from the DarknessEdit

Cadwell and Honor outside the Fighters Guild.

After you have rescued King Laloriaran Dynar, you can find Cadwell outside the Fighter Guildhall, along with his trusty companion—Honor.

"Smashing. So glad you could join us. Welcome to the Fighters Guild, which is a rather mundane name, isn't it?
Though it is precise. They fight things and they're in a guild. Works rather well, actually, come to think of it."
You found the Fighters Guild members?
"Actually it was Honor who found them.
Have you met? We've been together, forever. He knows Coldharbour almost as well as I do."
Your pet found them?
"Pish-tosh! Honor isn't a pet! He's my faithful steed!
He does mistake the odd Wood Elf for a tasty treat, but they've been known to do that themselves, haven't they?"

Breaking the ShackleEdit

When you reach the door leading to the Mooring and the Great Shackle, Cadwell will be waiting with the others.

"We meet again, fellow knight! Wonderful day to sally forth, wouldn't you say?"
How did you get here?
"Oh, you know. A hidden path, the odd secret door, and Bob's your uncle, here I am.
I heard you were going to attack the Great Shackle. That's a quest worthy of a knight of my stature!"

When you and the group first enter The Mooring so Vanus Galerion can destroy the Shackle.

Cadwell: "Have at thee, vile Shackle! We're going to give you a damned good thrashing!"

Once the Great Shackle is destroyed, Cadwell will cut into Vanus' self-congratulations with some news.

Vanus Galerion: "I did it. The Great Shackle has been shattered! The threat of the Planemeld is no more!"
Cadwell: "Jolly good! And, as soon as you deal with the planar vortex, everything will be right as rain!"
Vanus Galerion: "What? Explain yourself, man! What planar vortex?"
Cadwell: "The Shackle formed a planar vortex. Kind of like an Oblivion straw that will suck Nirn right through and into Coldharbour. Quite amazing how I knew that!"
Vanus Galerion: "Enough! We can discuss this back in the Hollow City. I'll open a portal before this entire place collapses on top of us!"

Back at the Hollow City, after the Shackle is destroyed:

"I don't understand what you people see in this city. I mean, compared to the rest of Coldharbour, it's a bloody rathole."
Why didn't you mention this planar vortex before?
"I'm not entirely sure. I suppose it slipped my mind.
Besides, I thought everyone knew about the planar vortex. Can't take five steps in Coldharbour without hearing someone screaming about it. Of course, those screams are rather unintelligible …."
Pretend I never heard about it.
"Oh, it's the planar vortex. The penultimate convergence of the Planemeld between the worlds.
I haven't been there myself, mind you, but Honor tells me it's a nasty place. All those horrible Nirn bits melting into the beautiful Coldharbour scenery."
Can we stop that from happening?
"It's already happening, my good chap. And the only access to the planar vortex is through the portal in Molag Bal's courtyard.
Wait a moment! Are you thinking of assaulting the Lord of Schemes' labyrinth and going through the portal? Count me in!"

The Army of MeridiaEdit

When the War Council is called, Cadwell can be found eating some bread and watching the show in the Chapel of Light. If you talk to him, he will say.

"I heard there was an important meeting going on. I'm sure they meant to invite me. After all, important meetings lead to quests, and quests are my speciality [sic]!
I'm always ready to smite evil and preserve the natural beauty of Coldharbour."

After you speak with the king, the meeting will begin.

King Laloriaran Dynar: "Attention, please! I have called you all here because the moment of destiny fast approaches."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "The Great Shackle has been destroyed, but not before a planar vortex was established. We must destroy this vortex before it sucks the very essence of Nirn into Coldharbour."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "The Fighters Guild shall deal with the Chasm's defenders, but blades have little power against magic."
Vanus Galerion: "And that's where my mages come in."
Vanus Galerion: "Out scouts report that some kind of magical fixtures block access to the path across the Chasm. Mages there already work on a way to overcome these fixtures, and we are prepared to lend our strength when the main force arrives."
Sergeant Kamu: "A sound plan. Plays to our unique strengths. But this one wonders, what if the mages can't overcome Molag Bal's magic?
Vanus Galerion: "A ridiculous question! Of course my mages can overcome this magic!"
Cadwell: "Ah, magic! The solution to all life's problems. I love magic! It's so … magical."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "I have absolute confidence in Vanus and his mages."
Gabrielle Benele: "Thank you, your lordship. But to be honest with you, I'm not feeling as confident as Vanus about this."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "We shall fight with all our strength. There is no other option. Lives will be lost, but hopefully a world will be saved."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "Know that the Chasm is only the first stage of this battle. The planar vortex abides within the very heart of the Molag Bal's lair."
Darien Gautier: "Oh, this just gets better and better!"
Gabrielle Benele: "Darien! Mind your tongue!"
King Laloriaran Dynar: "Darien only seeks to lighten a tense situation. Still, we have to try. To do nothing is to doom Tamriel to certain destruction."
Darien Gautier: "Well, when you put it that way, there are a lot of lovely ladies that need to be saved …."
Vanus Galerion: "Yes, well, be that as it may, we launch our assault on the Chasm immediately. The King needs to talk to the champion and I must discuss some final details with the mages. The rest of you have your own preparations to see to, I'm sure."

Cadwell will then leave with the others.

Crossing the ChasmEdit

After speaking with King Dynar, Cadwell will be waiting at the gates to the Chasm, he will have some bad news about the army's progress. Alternatively, you can start the quest through Cadwell. The dialogue for starting the quest through either NPC is no different, save for the fact that if you don't take it from Dynar, Cadwell says the following as you approach:

"Ah, it's about bloody time you showed up!"

Speak with him to get up to speed on the situation in the Chasm.

"Well, this has my knickers in a twist! We have a perfectly fine army, but what good is it? Sitting around this side of the Chasm, twiddling its collective thumbs.
It's rather embarrassing, if truth be told."
What's the situation?
"The situation? We're well and truly flummoxed! Before we could cross the Chasm, before we could confront Molag Grunda, we were stopped by a few irksome focus stones!
The wee ginger mage says we need to break the stones, but good luck with that!"
Break the stones? Sounds easy. What's the problem?
"Nothing other than the multitude of Dremora sitting on top of them! I could handle this myself, but I didn't want to make the rest of the troops sad by showing off my awesome battle skills.
But, you, on the other hand. They're used to that from you."
I'll destroy the focus stones. (If you accept the quest directly from Cadwell)

You can follow Cadwell through the gates to the Chasm and find him standing next to Gathwen.

"The wee ginger mage can tell you more about the focus stones.
Mmm, ginger. You must try my clannfear haunch in pickled ginger. Exquisite! Not to brag, but I'm almost as good a cook as I am a warrior."

After you have destroyed the focus stones, you can find Cadwell with Gathwen at the portal to the second tier.

"Good show! The portal belongs to us now!
Sir Darien and that lovely lizard have gone on ahead. I think he might be a bit intimidated by our prowess on the field of battle, and he's trying to compensate."
Any idea what I should expect, up there?
"Grunda's a cheeky one, and she knows we're getting close. She's summoning reinforcements faster than Darien can kill them.
You'd best get to it!"
I need to ask you something else.
"By all means. Do you want to know how many Daedra can dance on the head of a pin? How I manage to stay so cheerful even in the most perilous of circumstances? What's my favorite color? Ask away!"
What can you tell me about Molag Grunda?
"Molag Grunda? Large woman with wings? Bit of a temper? Guards the gatehouse?
I hear that she's the daughter of Molag Bal, if you can believe that! He never struck me as a family man, but who am I to judge?"
Why do you know so much about Coldharbour?
"It's my home, old chum! Has been for years. I know every wondrous nook and cranny. Beautiful place, full of fascinating creatures.
Of course, they often try to kill you, but that's the challenge of it, isn't it?"
I'm on my way./I'm ready. Let's move out.

Once on the second tier, Cadwell will at first stay with Denthis and Dithis to guard the portal.

"I'll guard the portal and make sure we maintain control of this location. I may have to take on a Daedroth or two single-handedly, but that's to be expected in my line of work.
See if you can't cut off the source of those reinforcements, would you?"

After closing the portals with Walks-in-Ash and Darien Gautier on the lower levels, Cadwell will be waiting for you at the threshold of Molag Grunda's lair.

"I think our friends have the Chasm well in hand. What say we pop in for a chat with Molag Grunda?"
I'm ready when you are.
"Right! We control the rest of the Chasm now and the troops have matters well in hand.
Let's go and have a sit down with Molag Grunda. She's always good for a laugh and a song."
What can we expect in there?
"From Grunda? Rudeness, hostility, sarcasm, and most certainly a large amount of open hostility.
I've no idea how she keeps house, but I imagine we'll find the usual Daedric touches that make Coldharbour feel so warm and inviting."
All right, I'm ready.
"I can't wait to see Molag Grunda's face when she sees us. She and I go way back, you know.
Once we get inside, we cross one little bridge to reach the gatehouse. Follow me!"
Lead the way.

He will then become your follower:

Cadwell: "There's a trick to getting into the gatehouse proper, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is. Not to worry, though. I'm sure it will come back to me."

If you speak with him he will mention his love for the particular landscape.

"I've always loved this part of the Chasm. So majestic. Takes your breath away, doesn't it? On occasion, quite permanently."

Once you cross the span, he will remember the trick to opening the door.

Cadwell: "Ah, of course! I remember now! There's a flywheel in each of the side antechambers. We need to start them spinning to open the main door."

As you enter the northern flywheel chamber, he will remember more.

Cadwell: "It's all coming back to me! There's a lever across the chamber. Just give it a good tug and that flywheel will be spinning in no time."

If you speak with him after unlocking both flywheels, he will mention he's looking forward to the visit.

"Shall we go and have a proper visit? I'm sure Grunda's prepared something lovely, just for the occasion."

When you approach the door:

Cadwell: "What an impressive door! Look at that craftsmanship. Remarkable! Grunda always had good taste, I have to say."

After using the lever:

Cadwell: "See? I knew that would work! A word of advice. Guard your pluckables. Grunda enjoys plucking out eyes, spleens... anything pluckable, really."

Once Tiny and Molag Grunda have be defeated, Vanus will enter through the door.

Cadwell: "Well, that was disappointing. Hardly worked up a sweat!"
Vanus Galerion: "Well done! With Molag Grunda defeated, the entirety of the Chasm is now under our control."
Vanus Galerion: "Gathwen is rounding up the troops. I asked her to keep an eye on Darien, as well. He's a terror with a sword, but sometimes I think he takes too many chances."
Vanus Galerion: "Meet me outside. We have things to discuss and I find these Daedric halls extremely distasteful."

After leaving Grunda's Gatehouse, Cadwell will be taking a break at the Orchard Wayshrine just outside the door. You can have a chat with him, though he will be disappointed in Grunda's lack of manners.

"Maybe next time Grunda will serve a proper tea when guests arrive. I mean, really! The social graces are simply beyond some people."
I don't think she was expecting guests.
"What's that? Sorry, bit of a problem with the right ear ever since I had that run-in with a titan. Rings like the bells of Cyrodiil when the weather turns."
You seemed to know Molag Grunda. Does it bother you that we had to kill her?
"Oh, she'll be back eventually. You can't really destroy a Daedra, no matter how hard you try.
I wonder if Grunda likes wildflowers? I'll make sure we have some waiting for her when she eventually re-corporealizes."'

Once you complete Crossing the Chasm, he will instead say.

"What a rousing adventure! I wonder what else awaits intrepid knights such as we?
I think I'll commission a ballad to describe our exploits. How do you feel about iambic pentameter?"

The Harvest HeartEdit

When you agree to help Vanus with the vampires in the Orchard.

"Planning to take a stroll in the Orchard? The denizens of that place are quite interesting.
And by interesting, I mean they'll like as not try to tear your face off. We've a lot of that here in Coldharbour, for some reason."

The Citadel Must FallEdit

He can be found strumming his lute on the land bridge outside the Reaver Citadel. He will comment on Vanus' dismissal of Lyranth.

"Imagine, a fortress full of Dremora! We'll have a jolly good time storming these walls!
I wonder if we shouldn't have dismissed the Dremora lass so quickly, though. When they go out of their way to talk, I find it's usually a good idea to listen."

Once you break the wards to the Fighters Guild Hall, Cadwell will be inside in the stairwell.

"My old chum. My bosom companion. My comrade in arms. How long has it been? I've missed you, terribly!
By the way, what took you so long? The King is upstairs. He wants to speak to you."
Why aren't you outside fighting?
"I'm preparing myself to dazzle the enemy! I'll cut them to ribbons, I promise you. Just need a moment to buff the old breastplate. The enemy expects a certain amount of resplendance [sic] from a hero, and I shall not disappoint!"
What are the orders from the king?
"Oh, Dremora … something, something. You can ask him yourself, he's right upstairs. For a king, he mumbles a lot.
Lovely crown he's got, though. Rather dashing, isn't it? I wonder where I can get one of those."

After you have gotten your next set of orders from King Dynar, Cadwell will casually mention his latest feats performed while you were gone.

"I stepped out for a moment, dispatched a dozen Dremora, then popped back in. Just wanted to make sure I had the opportunity to see you off.
Well, off with you, then! So long! Toodle-oo! Don't forget to write! Ta-ta! Cheerio!"

Cadwell can be met once again outside the Reaver Citadel Pyramid with Gathwen and Lyranth.

"Exciting, eh? Beasties with wings, an angry Valkynaz—you even managed to befriend a Dremora. Clever, that.
I made friends with a Dremora once. We had some grand adventures, right until she tried to cut out my lungs. Oh, those were good times!"
Is this all fun and games to you?
"Well, not just fun and games. There's excitement and bloodshed, too.
Your Dremora lady friend says she can open the door to the pyramid, but she requires Daedric blood or some such. I'm afraid I'm fresh out of it."

Once Lyranth unlocks the door, Cadwell will be spoiling for a fight.

"Not to worry, I'll be right behind you! We'll give that Valkynaz the thrashing he so richly deserves!"

After you have killed the Valkynaz and obtained the Labyrinth Key, Cadwell will be doing jumping jacks near the portal entrance.

"Every muscle must be properly stretched before we rush into battle. Wouldn't want to get a cramp when we make our heroic charge into death's chomping maw, would we?"

The Final AssaultEdit

Once you have spoken with Hahnin and Gabrielle Benele, Cadwell will be one of the fighters you can take with you during the initial assault.

"About time you got over here, old chum. Exercise is all well and good, but if I keep this up much longer I'll be useless in the actual battle!"
I may need your assistance once the assault begins.
"A quest? How marvelous! I shall march by your side into the darkest depths of foul iniquity, our weapons aloft and aglow with the fires of eternal righteousness!
You honor me this day, my friend. I gladly accept this mission."
Accompany me on the initial assault.
"My sword is yours, my boon companion! Together, we will protect the beautiful realm of Coldharbour, and perhaps even save that ugly rathole you call home. Victory, thy name is Cadwell!"
Let me speak to the others before I make a decision.
(Leaves Conversation.)

Before picking a partner:

"I love what the Dark Prince has done with this place. Quite lovely. Shame we have to march an army through here. Soldiers rarely take care to watch where they step."

If you pick Cadwell and speak to him again, he'll say:

"Let good King Dynar know what an excellent choice you made so we can get this caravan on the road."

After you listen to King Dynar's speech, you can enter the outskirts of the Endless Stair. Cadwell will speak while approaching you.

Cadwell: "One last quest, old chap! One last leap into the fire! Unless we survive, of course. But how likely is that?"

When you fight off the first ambush:

Cadwell: "I like Nords! They fight so cheerfully!"

The second ambush:

Cadwell: "We're approaching that vile portal of wrong-doing. I can feel it in my bones. It feels like... evil."

When he notices the Guardian of the Gate:

Cadwell: "Ah, another beautiful creature has fallen under Molag Bal's spell of evil! We must set her free!"

After killing the Guardian, but before closing the portal, If you speak with him he will say:

"Quick, close that door! That's a dreadful draft! In the meantime, I'll make sure none of the Dark Lord's minions creeps up on you."

After you close the Reinforcement Portal:

Cadwell: "Another victory! I'm going to run out of room on my scabbard! Where will I mark my kills?"

If you speak with Cadwell at this point he will say:

"What jolly good fun! I believe the next stop is the Labyrinth, old chum. Shall we toddle off?"

If you speak with Cadwell after Vanus appears through a portal to greet you, he will say:

"That mage keeps popping up on the strangest places. I'm not sure I trust him. He thinks his boots don't stink, if you take my meaning. Anyway, I believe he would like a word with you."

He will then depart, saying:

Cadwell: "Alas, fine friend, the Fighters Guild has need of me. Do stay out of trouble while I'm gone."

You will meet Cadwell again when he brings Vanus to you once you escape the Statue Room with Gabrielle Benele.

Cadwell: "I knew I'd find them here! Interesting. I've never been to this area before but it's … breathtaking!"
Vanus Galerion: "Cadwell, your mastery of portals does you proud!"

With the lull in action, you can talk to Cadwell.

"It took a bit of work, but I was able to track you down. Just one of my many gifts, if you must know."

Once you arrive at the Planar Vortex, Cadwell will be one of your allies who will emerge from the portal. You can talk to him before starting the final leg of your mission though you will need to remind him why you are here.

"I always wanted to see a planar vortex up close and personal. Isn't that sky spectacular?
Wait, what are we doing here again?"
We're here to stop the Planemeld ….
"Of course! Our epic quest. It must have slipped my mind. I've been on so many of these adventures, you know. After a while they tend to blend together. Kind of like these two realms are doing.
Oh, sorry old chap! That's a bad thing, right?"
Yes, the Planemeld is a bad thing.
"Yes, yes, I knew that. Terrible getting your dismal world into the wondrous vistas of Coldharbour. Like dipping bread in honey. Frightfully repulsive!
Still, I believe this might just be my best quest yet!"
[Intimidate] When this is over, I'm going to make you try bread and honey.
"Well, that'd just be disgusting, wouldn't it? Do you know where honey comes from? It's regurgitated flower nectar!
Oh, very well. I accept your challenge. Now let's go and finish this so that I can taste your bitter poison."
Aren't you concerned at all?
"Concerned? About what?
We're heroes, my boon companion, and heroes always win! Let that be a lesson to you. Now let's go and stop the Planemeld!"

During the push to the central point, Cadwell will be exhausted from the fighting:

Cadwell: "By the Kwama Queen that hurts! No worries, I'll be all right. Should have done more stretches. Try not to do anything heroic without me. I'll only be a moment."

As you advance with the rest of your companions, he will disappear at some point.

God of SchemesEdit

After being called to the Harborage for the final time, Cadwell will be there.

"Oh! Hello there. Surprised to see me? So am I, so am I. I do get around, don't I? Haven't the foggiest idea how I do that, honestly."

He will make his reappearance during the epilogue, which will differ depending on who was sacrificed for the Amulet of Kings.

If Varen is sacrificed:

Lyris Titanborn: "What... what happened? How did we get here? I remember being overwhelmed, but then..."
Cadwell: "Right. Sorry about that. I called in a bit of help to pull you out of there. I do hope I didn't overstep my bounds."
Sai Sahan: "Snow Lily, I..."
Lyris Titanborn: "I know, Sai. It's over. It's all over."
Cadwell: "Well then! Happy endings all around! Smashing! Who's got the brandy?"
Sai Sahan: "Wait, where is Tharn? Did he survive?"
Cadwell: "He vanished. Ran off, I think. And he took the amulet you chaps found, with him."

After talking with Cadwell, he will deliver Varen's eulogy:

Cadwell: "You know, that Varen fellow was always a good chap, even if he did muck things up at the start. And he did put things right in the end, didn't he?"
Cadwell: "He's still with you, you know. A part of you, really. And perhaps he can continue to serve the land and the people he gave his life to save, through you.
That's all well and done, then. There's just one bit of business left."

If Sai Sahan is sacrificed:

Varen Aquilarios: "The scents of the Harborage fill the air. But what happened? How did we return? Lyris? Lyris, are you there?"
Cadwell: "Not to worry, not to worry! Lyris is fit as a fiddle, and you all seem quite intact, as well."
Lyris Titanborn: "I'm here, sire. But where's Tharn?"
Cadwell: "He vanished. Ran off, I think. And he took the amulet you chaps found, with him."
Lyris Titanborn: "That bastard! Sai died for that Amulet!"
Varen Aquilarios: "The Amulet's power is expended for generations to come. It will be of no use to him, now."
Varen Aquilarios: "Things feel different. Molag Bal's hold on my mind has been lifted. I am finally free of him!"

After talking with Cadwell, he will deliver Sai Sahan's eulogy:

Cadwell: "I don't know that this world will ever see the like of Sai Sahan again. He was the embodiment of loyalty and discipline—qualities that he tried to share, not by word, but by deed.
You can make use of that. He's part of you now, you know."
Cadwell: "Our noble Redguard friend may have shuffled off this mortal coil, but his spirit will live on, through you.
That's all well and done, then. There's just one bit of business left."

If Lyris Titanborn is sacrificed:

Sai Sahan: "How have we returned? The last thing I remember was being overwhelmed!"
Cadwell: "Right. Sorry about that. I called in a bit of help to pull you out of there. I do hope I didn't overstep my bounds."
Varen Aquilarios: "He is gone! Molag Bal no longer touches my mind! I'm finally free of him!"
Sai Sahan: "My Lord Varen, are you injured?"
Varen Aquilarios: "I'm fine, Sai. But where is Tharn? I do not hear his steps or his breath."
Cadwell: "He vanished. Ran off, I think. And he took the amulet you chaps found, with him."
Sai Sahan: "I cannot believe Snow Lily is gone. Why did she do it, My Lord?"
Cadwell: "Here now, my good man! Lyris Titanborn is a hero! She gave her life for a noble cause!"
Varen Aquilarios: "Sir Cadwell is right, Sai. We will all mourn her, but it was her choice. Her sacrifice to make."

Epilogue:

Cadwell: "Ah, fair Lyris. She will be missed. Her light may have left this world, but her spirit lives on in you … perhaps even in a literal sense. Take comfort in that."
Cadwell: "And she did give her life to save this world, didn't she? Though I can't understand why you're all so fond of it. Dreadful place. Ah well, it's horses for courses, I suppose.
That's all well and done, then. There's just one bit of business left."

No matter who is sacrificed, Cadwell will call you over once you have spoken to the survivors and parted ways.

Cadwell: "Don't toddle off just yet. Might I have a word?"

He will then go over to the Light of Meridia.

"I take it you ran into Lady Meridia? Lovely woman. Charming. We get on famously!
While you lot were having yourselves an epic row, I gave her a shout. Asked if she'd be willing to help us out if things went badly."
You asked Meridia to pull me out of Coldharbour?
"The trick of it was the timing. With every blow to that Daedric windbag, you freed hundreds of souls. She was able to catch yours before it wandered off. Jolly good trick, that."
Indeed.
"This is delightful! World saved, heroes gone their separate ways, and this knight has a new mistress to serve. Bravo! Couldn't be happier! Smashing! Truly!"

If you exit out of the conversation before turning in the quest:

"That did make sense, didn't it?"
I suppose so. (Leads to quest completion dialogue)

Once he delivers his eulogy, he will have something more for you.

"It's you! Over here, quickly! I got something exciting!"

Cadwell's SilverEdit

This becomes available once God of Schemes is completed.

Speaking to him immediately in the Harborage:

"Good to see you again, old chum! Truly!"
What should I do now, Cadwell? (Leads to quest dialogue)

If you don't start Cadwell's Silver immediately, when you approach a city, his projection will appear and automatically give you the quest.

Cadwell: "Ah! There you are. When you have a moment, find me at the Harborage. I've got a question for you."
Cadwell: "Ugh. Tamriel. How do you stand it?"

When you speak with him at the Harborage, Cadwell will admit that he didn't think you and your companions would succeed.

"I'm positively chuffed things have gone so well! To be completely honest, I didn't think we had a ghost of a chance. But then, if we weren't up against overwhelming odds, we wouldn't be heroes, would we?"
What should I do now, Cadwell?
"Still itching for more adventure? Smashing! Have you ever wondered what would've happened if you'd woken up somewhere else? Washed up on a different beach?
My new mistress provided me with the means to help you, if you're up for the challenge!"
Help me? What are you talking about?
"Touch Meridia's light and see the world through the eyes of your former enemies.
But fair warning—you will no longer be seen as a great champion. Even familiar faces will see you as a soulless drifter, lost in an unfamiliar land. What say you?"
I'll do it!

You will then be prompted to touch the crystal. After your long journey through another alliance, you can return to him:

"You've done it again, haven't you? You're a hero, twice over! Brilliant!"
It's been a long journey.
"So it has, so it has! Are you feeling enlightened? Lighter? Lit?
Why you would want to keep mucking around in Tamriel is quite beyond me. Nasty place. How—how do you get the smell out of your clothing?"

If you talk to him again:

Cadwell: "Will you have another go, then? Just one alliance left, you know!"

Cadwell's GoldEdit

As soon as you finish Cadwell's Silver, he'll immediately set you on the next grand adventure:

"Well done! Well done, indeed!"
Thank you for the opportunity, Cadwell.
"Thank me? You're the one doing all the work, what with all your heroics and the derring-do!
But if you enjoyed that, there's more in store for you!"
More?
"Well, you've experienced two of the three alliances. Care to finish the set? Fill out your map? Collect all the … metaphors?
If you're game, just touch Meridia's light and you'll be off again!"
I'd like that.
"Will you have another go, then? Just one alliance left, you know!"

After completing the required quests to finish Cadwell's Gold, you'll be prompted to see him at the Harborage once again:

"Dear me! Thrice the champion, is it? Bravo!"
I've traveled the world, Cadwell.
"Not the whole world! It's rather larger than it looks. But, you've seen quite a lot of it, to be sure!
Well done. Well done, indeed. Now, I've a little something for you. Hardly suitable recompense for all your efforts, but there you are."

After completing the quest, he'll say:

"That's it, then? Seen the world thrice over and none the worse for it, eh?
You should be ready for anything—and believe you me, the Daedric Princes never rest. They're always mucking about with something or other!"

A Rage of DragonsEdit

Meeting CadwellEdit

After meeting up with Abnur Tharn, he will ask you to investigate some sites where strange power surges were detected. He suspects that it is Cadwell and asks that you convince the knight to help if you find him. After speaking with a disgruntled Lharahad, you can find Cadwell and Honor digging at an old gravesite.

Cadwell: "Uncanny! It looks just like the lovely place I dreamed about. Must be why my portals led me here. Eventually."

You can then talk to him, if you have met him previously, he will recognize you.

"Ah, hello there! Good to see you again, old chum! Have you come to pay your respects, too?
It was the strangest thing. I dreamed I was looking at this very gravestone. So here I came and there it is, all solid and everything!"

Otherwise:

"Hello! Have you come to pay your respects to this poor fellow, too?
It was the strangest thing. I was looking at this very gravestone in a dream. So here I came and there it is, all solid and everything!"
Is that gravestone important?
"Important? I have no idea! I suppose it must be. I saw it in a dream, after all. Or was it a vision? I get those two confused.
Anyway, I felt a sort of pull and stepped through a door. Then pish-posh, Honor's a bantam guar—and here I am!"
Abnur Tharn sent me to check on surges of power he detected.
"Tharn, you say? The grumpy battlemage? How is the old boy?
The surges were probably just me. My portal took a few tries before we honed in on this exact location. Now, why don't you take a look at the gravestone and see what you make of it, hmm?"

The lad has returned

Before you check the gravestone, you can ask him about his experiences at the site of his previous attempts.

What happened at the other sites you visited before you found this gravestone?
"Well, it took a few tries to find the exact spot I saw in my dream.
A number of frightfully rude lads and lassies occupied the first location I visited. Demanded my surrender, if you can imagine such a thing. Naturally, I gave them the old heave-ho!"
I saw that bantam guar rummaging around in a foul-smelling sack at one site.
"Foul-smelling? I'll have you know that was my lunch! Can't believe I lost it.
And if by bantam guar you mean my faithful steed, Honor, well, he's always getting into my foodstuffs. Has the appetite of a mammoth and the cunning of a fox, that one!"
And did you also dispatch the ogrim I found at one of the sites?
"Dispatch? Why would I do such a terrible thing? I adore those adorable pudge-buckets!
Alas, Grook was standing a little too close when I opened my portal. Poor thing fell in and took a nasty spill. When the neck bone snaps, it makes an awful sound."

After you read the Ancient Gravestone, you can talk to him about it.

"Were the words the same for you? Sometimes written language likes to confuse me. Words change and switch places. Very annoying.
Anyway, the gravestone mentions the Betrayer. Sounds like a dastardly chap. I wonder if I ever met him?"
Why do you think you dreamed about this gravestone?
"I don't have the slightest idea. The words inscribed upon it conjure up all kinds of questions though. Who is this Betrayer? Whom did he betray? Why did they bury only his head? And where did they put the rest of the poor fellow? I don't have a clue!"
Abnur Tharn said that if I found you, I should ask if you'll help us with Elsweyr's Dragon problem.
"Dragons! I haven't battled a Dragon since … you know, I can't remember, but I'm certain I fought one or two in my day. I was a gallant knight, after all.
Of course I'll help! I just need to do a little more digging into this dream thing first."
Then we'll see you soon.

As you leave you can overhear him talking to his shovel.

Cadwell: "Did you hear that, my trusty shovel? Dragons! And mysterious graves! It's just like old times!"

If you speak to him again before leaving, he'll say:

"I noticed a Khajiiti settlement nearby. Riverhold, if I recall. The last time I visited the place, it was barely two buildings and a creek!
I'll meet you and Abnur there after I finish up here."

Cadwell wants to talk

If you have completed the main quest, he'll let you ask how he's been:

Cadwell! What have you been up to since we last saw each other?
"Oh, you know. A bit of derring-do, a righteous quest, and a quick jaunt around Oblivion and the known planes of existence. All very exciting!
Never found a place quite as lovely as Coldharbour, but what place could be?"
I thought you dedicated yourself to the service of Meridia?
"Serve Meridia? Did I say that? Hmm. I do recall odd lights and an exasperated voice in my head, but I thought it was related to a rap I took to the old noddle.
Was that her? I hope I didn't offend or disappoint the poor woman in some fashion."

However, if this is the first time you've met, you can ask him about himself and what he is:

What are you, exactly?
"Didn't we go over this? I'm a chivalrous knight!
Oh, you mean the pale and dashing complexion. Well, I'm a Soul Shriven, a denizen of lovely Coldharbour. I'm the oldest of my kind and sort of a role model. At least for those who haven't gone feral."
Why are you wearing a pot on your head?
"It's called a helmet, I'll have you know. The proper headgear for a daring knight! Not at all as pedestrian as the foppery you're adorned with.
Ah, sorry, old chap! Your attire is perfectly adequate. Suits you to a tittle, it really does."
RiverholdEdit

After you return from the Sleepy Senche Mine, you will find Cadwell kicking a pumpkin around outside the K'har Zhab Hall.

Cadwell "Ah, there you are! Spare a moment for a chit-chat, hmm?"

Speak with him to see what happened after you left.

"If we've had this conversation already, then I wanted to thank you for the useful advice. But if I haven't seen you since our talk at that mysterious gravestone, which seems much more likely, then I could really use your help."
I just got back, Cadwell. Tell me what's wrong.
"Did I mention the dreams? Visions, really. They come and go without warning, like seeing through someone else's eyes. Quite disconcerting, in an interesting sort of way.
Anyway, my trusty shovel and I, we searched that entire grave, and it was gone."
Gone? What was gone?
"The Betrayer's head! The dreams, the visions, they drew me there, but someone got to it before I did!
I have the strangest sensation in the pit of my tummy. It could be the cobweb porridge I had for breakfast. Or something bad is about to happen."
You think the Betrayer's head has something to do with the Dragons?
"Well, that's sort of like leaping from the Cliffs of Failure without a rope. Or at least without tying the end off first. I can't tell you how many times I've made that mistake!
Oh, Abnur wants to see you. He's in the town hall with the cat-general."
I'll go find Abnur Tharn.

Cadwell juggling pumpkins

If you talk with him afterwards, he will mention Tharn's apparent aversion to his first name.

"Don't worry on my account. Intrepid knights such as ourselves can't be rattled by a turbulent tummy. Or even by Dragons or visions, I dare say!
Now, off you go! Abnur hates to be kept waiting. He's also not fond of being called Abnur, or so he says."

The Battle for RiverholdEdit

Cadwell does some tinkering

As the town prepares its defenses, you can overhear Cadwell talk to himself as he tinkers with various scrap:

Cadwell: "Oh, this spring attaches to the widget with the hook, then put the fire salt in the tiny little nook …."

You have the option of talking with him before heading out to Greenleaf Farm:

"Sunlight, flowers, fresh air. How do you people tolerate this dreadful place? There's no azure plasm. No comfy sounds of torment. There's not even a hint of the sweet scent of Oblivion!
Alas. I miss the simple pleasures of Coldharbour."

After you have helped Captain Nala-do collect supplies from the Euraxian camps, she will send you to help Cadwell with his traps. He can be met along the roads to Riverhold and you'll find him tinkering with a sparking device:

"So good to see you again! I missed you terribly. Now, mind where you step. I had no idea I could make such delightful murder toys. You don't want to stick a toe into any of them, though.
Blew my little piggy right off."
Wait. You didn't know you could make traps?
"I can play a lute. Magnificent swordplay? My specialty! I can even make a delicious Daedra-heart flambe. But these doodads that go kaboom just popped into my head while thinking about how to help the cat folk.
I quite like the cat folk."
So you just figured out how to make traps by thinking about it?
"Wouldn't that be remarkable? Decide you need to know something and it just occurs to you in a flash of inspiration? Chocolate souffle! No, didn't work.
More likely, it's something I knew before they chopped my head off and scrambled my memories."
That's how you originally died, right?
"Took it right off the old body, yes. Not that I recall details. Probably better that way.
Anywho, you can help me arm the last few traps along the road. Just twiddle the spring and tweak the fiddly bit. Carefully. Watch. I'll show you."
I'll arm the traps along the road.

Cadwell will then walk over to a nearby trap to demonstrate how to arm it:

Cadwell: "To arm a trap, just twiddle this bit like so and …."
Cadwell: "Oh, dear."

A small explosion occurs, and Cadwell lands on his back-side:

Cadwell: "I'm fine, I'm fine. I twiddled when I should have tweaked. Just a wee bit scorched is all."

Return to Cadwell after setting the traps and he'll be in the throes of another vision:

Cadwell: "Oh, my, it's happening again."
Cadwell: "Well, that's an evil-looking Orc. A necromancer, I do believe."
Cadwell: "I recognize that tree! They're on their way to Riverhold! That's not good, not good at all."

Cadwell has a vision

You can then ask him about what he saw:

"I have enough trouble seeing through my own eyes, let alone someone else's. I hope this doesn't become a regular occurrence."
You had another one of your dream-visions? What did you see?
"The Betrayer's head … I'm not sure why we're connected or why it insists on showing me the most disturbing images.
I saw an Orc necromancer. Dreadful chap. He's coming to Riverhold … and he's bringing his nasty undead chums with him!"
The necromancer is Zumog Phoom. And the Betrayer's head … that's you, Cadwell.
"Rubbish and poppycock! That makes no sense whatso—wait, wait, I remember something. The Betrayer. Those loon-priests called me that. Right before they—ulp!
Well, we need to warn the cat people. The necromancer is coming and he's bringing undead!"
Let's get back to Riverhold.

Just then, Cadwell's traps go off, dispatching a few Euraxian Soldiers.

Euraxian Soldier: "For Queen Euraxia!"
<Explosion noises>
Cadwell : "Riverhold, with cats so bold! I'll see you there, if truth be told!"

If you talk to him before leaving:

"Hurry along and warn Abnur and the cats. I want to get a sense of what's coming our way. Reconnaissance, it's one of my fortes! That, and counting the number of Dremora that can dance on the head of a pin.
It's not as many as you might think!"

When you return to the outskirts of Riverhold to report to Khamira, Cadwell will teleport in beside her.

Khamira : "Over here, five-claw. Let us talk."
Cadwell : "They're definitely on their way, Khamira! Euraxians with perfectly aligned teeth!"

Speak to him before speaking to Khamira and he'll say:

"It occurs to me that if I can see through the Betrayer's eyes, he might be able to see through mine. Wouldn't want to give away any military secrets, so I'll stay out here and defend the bridge.
Just like at the Battle of Banekin Rum!"
Don't you mean Banekin Run, Cadwell?
"Banekin Run? No, I don't think so. I'm quite certain I was defending the door to the Everfull Flagon after the new shipment of Banekin Rum arrived. Delicious stuff, if a bit chunky for my taste.
Anyway, I'll try not to look at anything important."
You really think the Betrayer's head can see through your eyes?
"That despicable necromancer dug up my old head. We still have a connection, I'm sorry to say. Seems reasonable to assume that if I can see out of it, it can see out of me.
I wish I had some of that Banekin Rum. Settles the nerves, you know."

Speaking with him after saving Riverhold:

"We helped the cat-folk save Riverhold! I defended the bridge, you know. Gave us a tactical advantage.
For a moment, I heard Zumog Phoom's dreadful call. Almost deserted my post and went to join him before the sound abruptly went silent."
So Zumog Phoom can control you?
"No, no. Probably not. Being a sort of undead myself, I can sense necromantic influence. But I'm no mindless cadaver that can be manipulated from afar.
Well, I'm not completely mindless."

Two QueensEdit

RimmenEdit

After recovering Aneshi's key, meet with the defenders under the aqueduct outside of Rimmen. Cadwell will be there with Khamira.

"This city, Rimmen. I believe I visited this place long ago. It was newer then, not quite as large.
And there were definitely fewer Euraxians. I'm almost certain about that."
You're remembering more about the time before you became a Soul Shriven?
"It seems that before I became the emaciated epitome of perfection standing before you, I was the miscreant the world knew as Cadwell the Betrayer. My recollections of that time are all jumbled up. Like pieces of broken pottery in a burlap sack."
What do you think changed you?
"I've been wondering about that myself. Was it the transition from life to death? When I turned into a Soul Shriven? Perhaps the centuries I spent wandering around scenic Coldharbour? Who can tell?
I'm just glad that I'm no longer a monumental arse!"
Have you had any more visions through the eyes of your severed head?
"I've seen things that would curdle the cream in your cabbage pie! My original head is a menace! And that necromancer, Zumog Phoom, he's even worse!
They collected a pile of body parts. I think they're me! Or, the old me. It's all quite confusing!"
Are you sure you're up to helping us assault the palace?
"Wouldn't miss it for all the shackles in Coldharbour! I live for this kind of adventure!
Besides, I want to make sure they don't get around to reassembling my old body. One of me is quite enough. Two is definitely out of the question!"

Once the siege weapons have been destroyed, the group will meet outside the sewers. Speak to Cadwell and he'll complain:

"Why are we all standing around out in the open? That's a terrible way to sneak up on someone. Believe me, I've tried!"

Once everyone decides to move, he'll rally:

Cadwell : "I'll scout ahead! Tally-ho!"
Rimmen PalaceEdit

"Please … not like this …."

Inside the Great Hall within the Palace, you'll come across a harrowing sight:

Cadwell: "Help! They're going to destroy me!"
Cadwell the Betrayer: "Destroy you? No. We're simply correcting a mistake of nature."
Zumog Phoom: "We will transfer your duplicate's animus into you, Head. But our time with Queen Euraxia has reached its end. Come along."
Cadwell: "Please … not like this …."

The necromancer and disembodied head will disappear. Cadwell will point out the weak spot of the restraints:

Cadwell: "Try smashing these … glass baubles …."

Destroy the crystals and he'll remark:

Cadwell : "Well, that wasn't pleasant. You go on. I'll be along in a snap."

You can then talk with him to learn what they were doing:

"Can you believe the audacity? Trying to absorb my essence, really!"
What were they doing to you, Cadwell?
"I'm not quite sure of the particulars. You'd be surprised how little of the necromantic arts I managed to pick up, even after all that time in Coldharbour.
Anyway, I think that vile head wanted … well, me, I suppose."
Zumog Phoom mentioned they were abandoning Euraxia. Any idea what that means?
"From what I've heard, she really is a terrible ruler. And did you know that she's Abnur's sister? Family, am I right?
The necromancer told the, er, head that it was time to make a deal with a more powerful master, whatever that means."
Will you be all right now?
"I'm feeling a bit deflated, really. Probably wouldn't be worth a dented soup spoon in a fight right now. Need a bit of a lie-down. Maybe two.
You go ahead. The Royal Chambers are right up the stairs. I'll join you as soon as I can."

Cadwell will eventually find his way to the throne room after Khamira has taken it from Euraxia. Oblivious to the significance of the moment, he'll blurt out:

Cadwell : "Finally! This palace is a labyrinth! Did I miss anything?"

If you speak to him, he'll be preoccupied with his own predicament:

"Zumog Phoom has been collecting my original body parts. He tried to steal my essence and stick it back in my old noggin. I think … I think he's trying to put me back together!
Well, not me. The other me. The Betrayer."
Can you tell me anything about the Betrayer?
"Must I? Oh, very well. My memories are rather muddled, but it seems that in life I was rather a distasteful chap. I was a knight! A champion! I helped people, mostly, but mostly I helped myself.
Truth be told, I was a right and utter bastard."
But why did they call you the Betrayer?
"I had a … a friend, I think. Another hero of the age. One of these lovely cat people. Went by the name of Khunzar-ri.
I helped him do … something or other. Then, when he least expected it, I stabbed him in the back. Literally."
Why would you do a thing like that?
"That's another of those blank spaces in my memory. I have no idea why the vile person I used to be would commit such a dastardly deed. You know, once we find my head, we need to ask it about that.
Right before we toss it into a roaring fire."

The Final OrderEdit

Before you leave the palace, you'll find him entertaining himself by juggling what appear to be a Briar Heart, a Dwarven Orb, and a ball:

"I found a set of round, orb-like objects sitting on a forgotten shelf here in the palace. They're the perfect shape for juggling! Turns out I'm good at juggling. Who knew?
And I find it strangely soothing, after all that mayhem and fisticuffs."
Audience with KhamiraEdit

Arrive outside the palace and Abnur Tharn and Cadwell will be there. Cadwell will be in the middle of an episode:

Cadwell : "It's happening again! I see … I see … a Dragon!"
Abnur Tharn : "Cadwell? Cadwell! What was that about a Dragon?"
Abnur Tharn : "Ah, there you are. See to Cadwell, if you would. Then join us in the throne room for the war council."

Speak to Cadwell and he'll continue with his rantings:

"Hello? Is someone there? I appear to be back in my head. Well, my other head. The other head. This is so confusing!
Ah, wait, wait. Things are becoming clearer now. Ah, yes, well there you are! So good to see you again, my friend!"
Cadwell, what did you see?
"I saw that nasty Orc necromancer, Zumog Phoom. He really is a despicable fellow! And there was a Dragon! A huge, powerful, eyes-as-big-as-a-house Dragon! They called it Kaalgrontiid. Means champion of the bound time.
How do I know these things?"
Did you see or hear anything else?
"Well, yes, I did! Seems the ears are as connected as the eyes.
They talked about the moons. Something about an eclipse and the perfect time to use the gate. I remember something about that from when I was the Betrayer, but the details are hazy."
Your memories of your life are returning?
"My memory returns in dribs and drabs, but I'm not sure that's a good thing. If I remember anything helpful, though, I'll let you know.
Where are my manners? They're waiting for you. Queen Khamira has called another war council in the throne room."
Do you know what the war council is meeting about?
"Not a clue! But I know one way to find out.
Head inside and see what the cat queen has to say!"

Cadwell the BetrayerEdit

After speaking to the council and Kharmira, look for Tharn and you'll find Cadwell in the throes of yet another episode:

Cadwell : "Hold, varlet! Don't you dare attach that foot to my ankle!"
Abnur Tharn : "This is Cadwell's longest episode yet. Perhaps I can—"
Cadwell : "That's it! Time to give you knaves what for!"
Lord Gharesh-ri : "Bizarre visions, dismembered bodies … I hate necromancy! Cadwell trusts you, five-claw. You talk to him."

Try to speak to Cadwell and he'll say:

"Who's there? Speak up! I'm about to teach these rapscallions a valuable lesson. And yes, I plan to make it hurt!"
Cadwell, it's me. What's going on?
"Ah, jolly good! I could use a noble squire for the battle ahead … to battle a head? Anyway, Zumog Phoom has gathered the dismembered parts of the Betrayer's body. I can't allow the necromancer to put him—me—back together."
Cadwell, what are you seeing? Where is Zumog Phoom?
"I'm not entirely certain. It's definitely a dark, menacing cavern. Just the sort of place necromancers enjoy hanging around!
Oh, here, now! Stop that! Your pardon, noble squire, but I have to go kick myself in the head!"
Cadwell, wait!
Cadwell : "I'm off to put a stop to these dastardly villains!"

With that, Cadwell teleports out of the room.

Sepulchre of MischanceEdit

Enter Zumog Phoom's crypt and you'll see Cadwell, holding on for support:

Abnur Tharn : "Cadwell? What happened to you?"
Cadwell : "Tharn, old sport, they ripped it out of me …."

Speak to him and he'll tell you:

"I'm afraid I bungled this one royally, old friend."
Cadwell, tell me what happened.
"I opened a portal. Meant to put the villainous Zumog Phoom to the sword! He … got the better of me.
The necromancer stole my essence, flung it to assorted ritual sites throughout the lair. Now I'm weak and my old body is being restored."
What about Zamarak and Prefect Calo? Have you seen them?
"The big cat and the Imperial? They arrived shortly after I did, but they didn't fare much better. I'm not sure what Zumog Phoom did with them.
I've just been standing here, trying to recover enough strength to give it another go."
Maybe we can recover your stolen energy. Either way, we need to stop Zumog Phoom.
"Charge me up again? Capital idea! And I agree. We can't let the Betrayer join the Dragons. Hmm … that reminds me of a time … no, no, can't think. Too weak.
I'll stand with you as long as I can. Could use a bit of a lie down, though."

After talking to Cadwell, you'll hear:

Abnur Tharn : "I'll delay Zumog Phoom's ritual as long as I can. You take Cadwell and see if you can recover his stolen energy."
Cadwell : "Ah, good old Abnur. The nastier he treats you, the more you know he loves you."

If you speak to Cadwell again, he'll say:

"I may be weak, but I still have a few battles left in these old bones … or whatever stuff it is I'm actually made of.
If we can restore some of my energy, though, I'll be ever so grateful."

Once you find Calo and break the spell he's under, the energy released returns to Cadwell:

Cadwell : "How refreshing! Let's find the rest of me and put it back where it belongs."

Speak to him and he'll say: "You never know what you're missing until it's gone. I'm just glad to have that old bit of me back where it belongs!
What say we go and find the rest?"

Once you find Zamarak and break the spell he's under, the energy released returns to Cadwell:

Cadwell : "Ah, welcome back, little energy! I missed you so!"

If you speak to him, he'll only repeat what he said after saving Calo.

Finally, free Tharn from his spell and Cadwell will comment:

Cadwell : "Oooh, that hits the spot! Did you know I used to be a high chancellor? No, wait, that bit belongs to Abnur."

Speak to him and he'll offer:

"I'm practically my old self again! Well, not that old. I feel like me, not that other me from long ago.
Oh, this is so confusing! Let's just keep going. Tally-ho!"

As you get closer to Phoom, Nala-do's ghost will appear. She was summoned by Phoom's necromancer, but she was able to defeat them. However she still holds Cadwell's essence that binds her to the mortal plane. She releases it and returns to the spirit world. Cadwell will remark:

"The cat captain, she sacrificed herself … for me. I … I don't know what to say.
We need to hurry, my friend. Zumog Phoom is almost finished, and I'm starting to find this whole looking-through-two-sets-of-eyes thing to be quite disorienting."

Enter Zumog Phoom's Lair and the following scene will play out:

Zumog Phoom : "You really think you can stop me? Neither you nor that bumbling corpse stand a chance."
Cadwell : "Corpse!? I never! I'll have you know I'm barely one-quarter-cadaver on my mother's side!"
Cadwell : "Argh! What's happening …?"
Zumog Phoom : "Two of you can't exist in the same reality, Soul Shriven. The stronger the Betrayer becomes, the weaker you will grow."

Defeat Phoom and Cadwell will comment, "It feels like … I'm fading away …." as Cadwell the Betrayer rises. Speak to Cadwell and he'll say:

"I always heard that … introspection could be difficult. But meeting yourself … no one likes to discover that they were a tallow-catch.
Try not to … hold it against me. Him and me … we're two sides of a … dented coin."
Cadwell? What's wrong with you?
"I don't think the world can handle … more than one Cadwell at a time. My essence … I feel it draining away. Strange … as the end approaches, so does clarity.
You will try to stop him for me … won't you?"
Stop him? What's the Betrayer planning to do?
"Finish what he … what I … started a long, long time ago. I remember how we stopped the Dragons. Khunzar-ri and I. We tricked Kaalgrontiid, used his own ambition against him. Convinced him to place a portion of his power in Jode's Core."
How did that stop the Dragons?
"Kaalgrontiid ordered his brothers to follow suit. Once weakened, we were able to trap them in the Halls of Colossus. Then the Betrayer … then I … I killed Khunzar-ri. I earned that name.
I planned to steal the power, but Anequina's adepts …."
Cadwell, stay with me.
"I'm still here. Khamira. She looks like Anequina. So pretty ….
Anequina possessed a key to a special place. That's where I learned to use portals. Luckily, they cut off my head and dismembered me before I could reach Jode's Core …."
Cadwell, can you hear me?

As Cadwell fades from existence, he'll say in parting:

Cadwell : "I guess you have to chop me … him … up again. Tell Khamira, she has the key. And look after little Honor. He's a good steed …."
Vault of the Heavenly ScourgeEdit

Cadwell and his portal

Once Cadwell the Betrayer is defeated, Khamira will attempt to energize the Dragonhorn. Suddenly, though, a portal opens and out pops Cadwell, the soul shriven.

Cadwell : "A dip in Coldharbour's refreshing plasm and I'm fit as a fig tree! Now, where's the evil me?"
"Where is the fiend? Let me at him! I returned as soon as I could to help you give the Betrayer a good thrashing!"
The Betrayer has been destroyed. But what about you?
"I feel tip-top, I must say. I thought it was the cozy confines of my beloved Coldharbour, but I suppose it has more to do with the destruction of my other half.
Well, good show! The world is saved!"
Not exactly. The Betrayer set the moons in motion. When they align, the Dragons can reach the Core.
"That doesn't sound good. Let me think, hmm.
If I concentrate, I can recall what was going through my despicable other self's mind. He wanted to make sure no one could stop the path from opening. He promised the Dragons."
There must be a way to stop the eclipse.
"I'm afraid not. Least, not from here. He did something to the apparatus. It can't be used again. Khamira might be able to separate the moons, but she'd need to do it at the Moon Gate.
She looks a little peaked, though, doesn't she?"
We need to get her back to Rimmen.
Khamira : "I am … all right. Cadwell, can we use your portal to return to Rimmen?"
Cadwell : "Of course, Khamira. It's ready."
"My portal should take us directly to Rimmen.
I'm almost certain."

Speak to Cadwell once back in Rimmen and he'll say:

"I feel like a thousand pieces of gold! Just delightful!
But poor Khamira. She appears to have the weight of a mammoth on her shoulders. You should talk to her."

Jode's CoreEdit

You'll find him in the waterfall near the wayshrine.

"Hello! Come to partake in a before-the-battle cleansing? I find it prudent to make myself pristine prior to the start of a slaughter.
In my experience, the subsequent blood and gore adheres much better to a well-laundered body."
Khamira wants us to gather at the Moon Gate of Anequina.
"The Moon Gate? I hoped to wash away the memories of the Betrayer, but some stenches can't be removed with soap and water.
I'm sorry I made the moons move, my friend. Sorry I helped the Dragons."
That was the Betrayer, Cadwell, not you.
"But before I became the gallantly gaunt Soul Shriven form you see today, I was the Betrayer. I originally did all the terrible deeds that led us to this place.
I'm … I'm rather ashamed, dash it all."
So help us fix this, Cadwell. Help us stop the Dragons from reaching Jode's Core.
"Yes, of course. That was my plan all along. Make up for past atrocities by helping the nice cat people defeat the evil Dragons. Just like the hero I was before I became the Betrayer.
Tally-ho, then! I'll head to the Moon Gate now and meet you there."
I'll see you at the Moon Gate.
"As nice as these facilities are, I miss the boiling plasm pools of Coldharbour. Hot enough to melt the skin right off your bones. What an invigorating sensation!"
Won't the water rust your armor?
"And your point is …?"

Arrive at the camp and you'll find Cadwell… juggling fish:

"I have a good feeling about this. Reminds me of the time I led an assault on Molag Grunda's dinner party. The roast Yaghra were delicious!"

Soon as you report to Prefect Calo, the dragons will begin their attack. Cadwell will leapt into action:

Cadwell: "Time for reckless audacity and derring-do!"

While you are fighting off a squad of Euraxian soldiers with Zamarak, they will be ambushed:

Zamarak: "More soldiers, take them down!"
Euraxian Infantry: "What?"
<Gets cut down.>
Cadwell: "Surprise!"
Cadwell: "I do so enjoy cutting down blackguards down to size. Tally-ho!"
Zamarak: "The path is clear. We need to reach Queen Khamira!"

When you enter the Upper Moon Gate Landing corridor, Cadwell and Honor will appear out of a portal. They will run around a bit and then stop, looking confused:

Cadwell: "Hmm. Maybe I should have forked left instead of right? Let's try that again."

They then jump into another portal and disappear.

Later on, as you fight off another Euraxian squad, Cadwell will jump in to help:

Euraxian Infantry: "What is Oblivion—?"
Cadwell: "I've got these hooligans, old trout!"
Cadwell: "Let's get to Abnur before the moons completely align."

Once Mulaamnir and Kaalgrontiid are taken care of and the gateway closes, Cadwell and his timely portal will appear:

Abnur Tharn : "You did it, Khamira. You ended the eclipse. But that means …."
Khamira : "The Moon Gate has closed. We are trapped, yes—but Mulaamnir is dead and Kaalgrontiid has been defeated."
<Cadwell appears through a portal.>
Cadwell: "Oh, hello! You always find things in the last place you look!"
Abnur Tharn : "Kaalgrontiid, I wonder …? I'm actually pleased to see you, Cadwell. Come, Khamira. Your people await their queen."
Khamira : "Thank you, my friends. For everything."

After you arrive at the Rimmen Palace, Cadwell will leave with Abnur Tharn, mimicking his walk.

The Heir of AnequinaEdit

Approach the palace, and Tharn and Cadwell will be exiting the building while in conversation:

Cadwell : "Abnur, you simply must stay for the ceremony. It's not every day we get to see a lovely cat receive a crown!"
Abnur Tharn : "Nonsense. And don't call me Abnur. Besides, I think I've overstayed my welcome as far as Khamira is concerned."

Speak to Cadwell and he'll ask you:

"Talk some sense into him! Abnur can't just slink away like a thief in the night. It's undignified! Not to mention rude. I don't know what goes on in that otherwise brilliant mind of his!"

Speak to him after Tharn and he'll comment:

"Abnur's received a new quest from the Mane? As soon as we finish here, I'll join him. Quests are my specialty!
Oh, fiddlesticks! I just remembered. Queen Khamira asked me to be her King's Claw. I guess Abnur will have to soldier on without me."
Khamira said she wanted you as her King's, or rather Queen's Claw?
"Yes, indeed! Her exact words were 'You can call yourself the Emperor of Cyrodiil for all I care, just quit blathering and let me think!'
I've no designs on the Ruby Throne, but Cadwell the Queen's Claw has a rather dashing ring to it, eh?"

Speaking to him in the throne room before the ceremony:

"Tears of joy, my friend! Once Khamira arrives, this small stream will become a raging river. And Honor, he's even more emotional than me!"

After the coronation ceremony, he'll say:

"Wasn't that a beautiful ceremony? Not quite on the level of the time I attended Molag Bal's first Daedric Titan unveiling and Soul Shriven impalement celebration, but beautiful just the same!"
What's next for Cadwell?
"Next? Haven't given it a thought! It's enough trouble keeping track of the past and present to bother with what happens in the future.
Maybe I'll finally build that little house on the edge of Coldharbour's yawning Chasm. Ah, the vertigo!"
You're really considering going back to Coldharbour?
"Well, certainly. Eventually. It's my home. Besides, who would all the Soul Shriven look up to if I never returned?
Have no fear, my friend. If you ever need Cadwell's sword again, I'll rush to your side without hesitation. You have my word!"

Southern ElsweyrEdit

The Pride of ElsweyrEdit

Cadwell in Senchal

You will find him in Senchal Palace with Zamarak, Prefect Calo and Khamira. Speaking with him before Khamira:

"What an amazing coincidence, meeting you here like this! How are you, my cherished friend? I haven't seen you since we put a crown on the head of that beautiful cat lady, Khamira.
Speaking of crowns, did you happen to see where I placed my hat?"
Cadwell! I didn't expect to find you here.
"I rarely find myself where I expect to, either. One of the great mysteries of life, I dare say.
My portals usually take me where I need to be, whether I realize it or not. Rather convenient, if a bit disconcerting at times."
What have you been up to since I last saw you?
"A little bit of this and a little bit of that. Mostly the latter, not so much of the former.
I handled a few tasks for Queen Khamira. Visited with Abnur Tharn. Even dispatched a Dragon or two. The smallish ones. Nothing too impressive."
What about that house you were going to build in Coldharbour?
"So good of you to remember! The scamps have been working day and night to finish the place. Soon it will be a perfect get-away, a retreat from all the questing and derring-do.
You must come visit next time you're traveling the planes of Oblivion!"

Speaking with him after speaking to Khamira:

"I seemed to have jigged when I reached Solitude when I should have jagged. Well, anyway, here I am!
Now, did you summon me or did I send for you?"

After the ceremony:

"I heard all about what happened with that mangy beast, Kaalgrontiid. Well done, my friend! I just wish I had been able to join you. It sounds like it was a worthy quest indeed!
Alas, I had to see a Daedric Lord about a mind shriven horse."

Cadwell's Astounding PortalEdit

The furnishing Cadwell's Astounding Portal has unique dialogue and may begin with one of the following phrases:

"Now where was I? I mean, I know where I am now, but I have no idea where I came from."
"Ah, hello! Fancy meeting you here! I went for my daily constitutional and—Honor's your uncle!—here I am!"
"Sir Cadwell of Codswallop, at your service!"
"Have no fear, Cadwell is here! I have no idea where here is, but there you have it!"

Afterwards, Cadwell may say one of the following:

"Fancy a game of Oblivion Bop? It takes six-hundred-and-thirty-seven hours to play, but the last eighty-six are definitely worth it!"
"I just had the most enlightening conversation with a Dark Elf stable-hand. Did you know that in Deshaan they call helmets pots? Pots! Ludicrous!"
"Honor? Honor? Have you seen my faithful steed? Answers to the name of Honor. And Tumbleweed. Frankly, if food is involved, he'll answer to just about anything."
"Nice place you have here. Not as scenic as my beloved Coldharbour, but cozy all the same."
"Of all the effrontery! I requested the dish of the day at the Cold Moon Inn and they tried to feed me mammoth pate. Who eats such dreck?"
"Sometimes portals just open up around me. That's when I say, oh good! A new adventure! And then I wind up somewhere horrible—Daggerfall, for instance."
"Did I ever tell you about the Charge of the Dozen Banekin? A harrowing ordeal—until they ran into my knees and knocked themselves silly."
"Have you heard? Lyranth the Dremora wore white to Molag Grunda's blood sacrifice. Caused a scandal! They'll be talking about that for centuries, I'm quite certain."
"I forget. Did you send for me or did I summon you? Or maybe this meeting was purely coincidental? Well, no matter! We're both here, so that's something, I suppose."

As a closing statement he may say one of the following:

"Well, I really must run. I'm sure I'm late for an appointment. Happens to me every time. Ta-ta!"
"I'd love to stay and chat, but my services are needed elsewhere. A dashing knight's work is never done!"
"Farewell for now, my friend. And in case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!"
"Once more into the breach! I hope it isn't too cold there."

God of SchemesEdit

In one draft, it appears Meridia was supposed to speak with you and the surviving Companions alongside Cadwell following your return from the Colored Rooms. If Lyris was sacrificed:

Sai Sahan: "I cannot believe she is really gone."
Meridia: "Do not despair, Sai Sahan, son of Yokuda. Lyris Titanborn's sacrifice brought about the salvation of your world."
Sai Sahan: "Who comes here? Which Daedric Prince is this?"
Meridia: "You know me as Meridia. I appear to you in a form you can understand, but I cannot stay long.
This page of history is concluded, but there are many more chapters to be written. I must leave you now, but will be watching."

If Sai was sacrificed:

Meridia: "You are free indeed, Varen Aquilarios. Free of the calamity your hubris brought upon this world. Free of the Daedric Prince, Molag Bal."
Meridia: "I am the one you call Meridia. I appear to you in a form you can understand, but I cannot stay long.
This page of history is concluded, but there are many more chapters to be written. I must leave you now, but will be watching."

If Varen was sacrificed:

Lyris Titanborn: "What … what happened? How did we get here? I remember being overwhelmed, but then …."
Cadwell: "Right. Sorry about that. I called in a bit of help to pull you out of there. I do hope I didn't overstep my bounds."
Sai Sahan: "Snow Lily, I …."
Lyris Titanborn: "I know, Sai. It's over. It's all over."
Cadwell: "Well then! Happy endings all around! Smashing! Who's got the brandy?"
Sai Sahan: "Wait, where is Tharn? Did he survive?"
Cadwell: "He vanished. Ran off, I think. And he took the amulet you chaps found, with him."
Meridia: "Your questions are many, but there is little time to answer them all. Your companion knows the truth of things."
Cadwell: "Ah! Radiant Meridia! So good to see you again, my lady. Truly!"
Meridia: "Yes, you know me as Meridia. I appear to you in a form you can understand, but I cannot stay long.
This page of history is concluded, but there are many more chapters to be written. I must leave you now, but will be watching."
