Taneth is a port city in southern Hammerfell on the Abecean Sea, lying northwest of Rihad and east of Gilane. In ancient times, the al-Danobia Tomb was built near the city.[1] During the Interregnum, the famed author Lady Cinnabar worked from the Tower of the Fifth Doctrine in Taneth.[2] King Fahara'jad married Za-Rifah, known as the "Flower of Taneth".[3]

In 3E 253, Taneth was one of the Forebear cities that was refused aid by the Crown-leaning Elinhir when threatened by the Camoran Usurper. In retaliation, Taneth later refused to aid the eastern Crown kingdoms during the War of the Bend'r-mahk.[4] During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the city-state of Taneth was an active settlement. It was ruled by King Lhezem, and it had a rivalry with Gilane and Rihad.[5] Taneth was neighbored by several settlements, including Lainebon Place to the west, Riverview to the far northwest, and Roseguard to the southeast.[6] Following the Miracle of Peace, Queen Clavilla of Taneth tried unsuccessfully to have the charters of the independent guilds revoked from lands belonging to the Kingdom of Sentinel. Clavilla objected to the moderate policies of Sentinel's King Lhotun, believing that the accepted worship of Satakal was tantamount to heresy against the Empire.[4]

During Hammerfell's resistance against the Aldmeri Dominion in the Fourth Era, The Alik'r bounty hunter Kematu alleged that the city fell after it was betrayed from within.[7]

  • Arena was originally conceived as a fighting game featuring a tournament that took the player to each of Tamriel's cities to challenge different gladiatorial teams. According to a file from that stage of development left behind in the final game, Taneth's gladiatorial team would have been called "the War Eagles".[UOL 1]
