Chorrol is a Colovian town in northwestern Cyrodiil, between the Great Forest of west Cyrodiil and the Colovian Highlands of the Hammerfell border.[1] It is a boulder-strewn area where large oak canopies shade its streets.[2] Citizens of Chorrol are known as "Chorrolians".[3]
Layout and GeographyEdit
The city is divided into five main districts: Fountain Gate, Castle Chorrol, Chapel Street, West District, and the Great Oak Place.[4] It is protected by thick walls and guard towers.[1] Chorrol also possesses its own sewer system.[5]

HistoryEdit
Merethic and First EraEdit
While not much is known about the town's early history, the Merethic Era knight Cadwell hailed from Chorrol,[UOL 1] and Chorrol has housed a chapel to Stendarr since at least the First Era. The position of Archbishop of Chorrol was filled by one Vincius Imbrex by no earlier than 1E 1051.[6] The Academy of Chorrol was a scholarly institution which was based in the city at some point, but very little is known about it.[7]
Second EraEdit
The city had become a focal point for merchants in the shade of an oak tree since the Second Era when it was known as "Little Oak Place".[3]
According to some sources, Varen Aquilarios was the Duke of Chorrol before Emperor Leovic's decriminalization of Daedra worship caused him to take up arms and usurp the Emperor in a long and bloody war,[8] though other sources state he was the Count of Kvatch.[9][10] After being defeated at Fort Ash, Varen took control of the Legion of Chorrol which routed Leovic's troops into the Heartlands, paving the way for the Colovian Estates to unite and fight under his dragon banner.[11]
The first Count of Chorrol was Kantus Jeril, appointed for heroisms performed at the Battle of Pale Pass.[12] The powerful Motierre family have also been firmly established in Chorrol since at least 2E 579.[3]
During the Colovian Revolt of 2E 576, Varen Aquilarios drew his strongest support from the Colovian Estates including the old nobility of Chorrol county.[13] Chorrol was significantly affected by the Soulburst in 2E 579 when earthquakes ruptured the ground, splitting the town and leaving a gaping fissure infested with flame atronachs that killed Doran, the town's prefect. Wooden walkways were erected over the chasm but the noxious fumes caused many to fall to their deaths while crossing.[3] Many buildings, including the Great Chapel, were damaged or destroyed by the constant earthquakes, with the Oak and Crosier inn resorting to nailing furniture to the floor.[14]. During the Three Banners War circa 2E 582, the town was initially located within the territory held by the Daggerfall Covenant, although it changed hands many times over the course of the war. However, the real power over the roads around Chorrol was determined by control over nearby Fort Rayles.[15]
At some point following the Sack of Sancre Tor in 2E 852,[16] a statue dedicated to Saint Osla entitled "The Touch of the Healer's Hand" was erected just inside the city gates.[17]:361 Known locally as "the fountain",[18] this statue depicts Saint Osla ministering to the fallen at the Sack of Sancre Tor.[17]:361 It was erected in memory of all who died in that great battle. The district near the town's main gate came to be known as Fountain Gate following its construction. At some point, the statue seemingly was indeed a fountain and was surrounded by a pool, but by 3E 433 it had dried up.[4][19]
Third EraEdit
At the end of the Third Era, Chorrol was ruled by Countess Arriana Valga, widow of the hereditary Count Charus Valga of Chorrol.[4] Circa 3E 432, a political marriage was arranged between Lady Alessia of Chorrol and Count Marius Caro of Leyawiin.[20] In 3E 433, Chorrol came under siege by the forces of Mehrunes Dagon when an Oblivion Gate opened outside the city walls during the Oblivion Crisis.[21]
Fourth EraEdit
In the Fourth Era, the Crimson Dirks raided Colovian furs from the city.[22] Members of the Dirks would sometimes gather at The Grey Mare.[23]
