Varanis is an inland, rural region in southwestern Stonefalls, which makes up the southern Inner Sea seaboard in the province of Morrowind. When compared with its other neighboring regions (Zabamat and Deshaan), much of the region is sparsely inhabited.[1] But at the center of it all is its major population center; the city of Kragenmoor, which has historically been occupied by House Dres[2] and even once served as their capital.[3] The Tormented Spire, a large, dormant volcano to the east dominates over the Varanis region.[4] Two of Stonefalls' Ashlander tribes are located here in Varanis; the Kagesh and the Ulath tribes.[1]

HistoryEdit

Kragenmoor

Some of Varanis' oldest known structures are daedric shrines (two of which are associated with Sheogorath) and Kragenmoor,[1] whose ancient catacombs were built by the Chimer to honor the daedra.[2][5] The Chimer have also used the cave system; the Fungal Grotto for unknown purposes but built a shrine to Mephala deep inside and stored the Obsidian Husk inside it.[6][7] Before the Tribunal ascended to godhood, the Iliath Temple was built as place dedicated to Azura.[8]

The history of the Ashlanders in Stonefalls is currently unknown, but the general culture of these nomadic folks originates after the decline of High Velothi Culture in the late Merethic Era, same goes for the Great Houses.[9] The Great House Dres has historically lived in this area of central Morrowind since the Golden Peace.[2][10] The Murkwater Tribe of goblins live in the Fungal Grotto, a vast cavern system underneath the Valus Mountains, in the western corner of Varanis.[7] Goblins in this part of Tamriel supposedly travel between Morrowind and neighboring Cyrodiil through secret passes and tunnels, and the western tribes have even developed subterranean agriculture techniques from their eastern brethren.[11]

In ancient times, the Nedic tribes of ancient Skyrim invaded Morrowind and conquered most of modern-day Stonefalls.[12] The Chimer brothers, General Balreth and Legate Sadal sacrificed themselves to become daedric weapons remembered in history as the Brothers of Strife.[13] After their victory was achieved, mages sealed the brothers away in Stonefalls' twin volcanoes. With the Coral Heart,[14] Sadal was imprisoned in a pocket realm of Oblivion and its entrance was bound in the Tormented Spire's caldera, which was guarded by House Dres in Kragenmoor.[15][16][17]

After the battle in Fort Virak in 2E 582, Grandmaster of House Indoril; Tanval Indoril leds his vanguard into Varanis and mets with Grandmaster Omin Dres in Kragenmoor. He demanded access to the Tormented Spire, where he hoped to resurrect Sadal with the Coral Heart, but when he was denied this, he took Omin's son, Sen as his prisoner in the crypts. With this leverage, Tanval made his way to the Tormented Spire.[5] However, following him were champions of the Ebonheart Pact attempting to stop him from causing any more deaths. The Hero of Fort Virak was able to save Sen Dres[18][19] but they could not stop Tanval from his ascent up the volcano. His activities re-awakened the volcano and many people across Varanis fled in fear.[4] After opening the final ward to Sadal's Prison, the Hero and Pact champions fought Sadal and saved the land.[20]

Village of Verarchen HallEdit

Map of Morrowind

In the Third Era, there was a settlement known as Verarchen Hall (also known as Veranis Hall)[UOL 1] that was located in the badlands region of west-central Morrowind, near the Valus Mountains border and east of a river. It was House Redoran's southernmost territory on the mainland.[21][UOL 1]

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the village of Verarchen Hall was an active settlement. It was ruled by Lord Zirath and had a rivalry with Markgran Forest and Reich Parkeep.[21] Verarchen Hall was neighbored by several settlements, including Karththor Dale to the southeast and Silgrad Tower to the west-northwest.[22]
