Witch Naenra Waerr was an ancient and legendary witch and crafter.[1][2] She was a legendary figure within Reachfolk legends and traditions,[3] and was responsible for the creation,[1] or, according to other sources, enchantment[2] of Umbra, a Daedric artifact designed with the sole purpose of the entrapment of souls.[2] It was created at the request of Clavicus Vile, who wanted the sword as a tool of mischief which would send him souls from the mortal realm.[1]
According to some versions of the tale Naenra was believed to be Daedric Prince Sheogorath in disguise.[1]
HistoryEdit
Ancient PastEdit
At some point before 2E 582,[3] Naenra created the Umbra at the request of Clavicus Vile, who wanted the sword to become a tool of mischief which would send him souls from the mortal realm. However, the blade was unstable, requiring Vile to give the witch a piece of his power to be imbued in the sword in order to stabilize it. Naenra Waerr supposedly managed to trick him, as the piece of Vile's power imbued in the sword became a sentient being that called itself Umbra, which was not the original intention of the Daedric Prince.[1][2]
Naenra was found and executed for her abhorrent creation, but not before she hid the sword.[1][2]
LegacyEdit
The sword took on a life of its own, remaining hidden until a worthy wielder was found. Umbra then slowly takes control of the wielder. The Umbra Sword can change shape, but it is always in the form of a bladed weapon. It changed its owners over time and was present throughout the history of Tamriel. It was known to be wielded by many warriors, such as an Orc whose name was lost to history,[4] Bosmer Lenwin,[5] and Imperial Cresitus.[6]
Naenra Waerr was remembered among the witches and held in high esteem. Reachfolk witches who pass the final test of wisdom and power honor Naenra Waerr by crafting masks akin to one they believe she used to wear when crafting Umbra.[3]
ArtifactsEdit
UmbraEdit
The Umbra Sword (or simply Umbra) is a Daedric artifact designed with the sole purpose of the entrapment of souls. Sometime before 2E 582, the ancient witch Naenra Waerr created the sword at the request of Clavicus Vile, who wanted the sword as a tool of mischief which would send him souls from the mortal realm. Naenra created the sword but it was unstable, requiring Vile to give the witch a piece of his power to be imbued in the sword in order to stabilize it. However, Naenra (sometimes accredited with being Sheogorath in disguise) supposedly tricked him, as the piece of Vile's power imbued in the sword became a sentient being which called itself Umbra. Naenra was executed for her evil creation, but not before she hid the sword. The sword took on a life of its own, remaining hidden until a worthy wielder was found. Umbra then slowly takes control of the wielder. The Umbra Sword has the ability to change shape, but it is always in the form of a bladed weapon. It has been reported as a black and silver claymore, a jet black longsword and as a black sword emblazoned with red markings. The sword is also known to have the ability to absorb the health and stamina of those it strikes.
Witchwise HeaddressEdit
A mask worn by Naenra when she crafted Umbra. Reachfolk witches are allowed to craft their own masks made in the likeness of the original mask of Naenra after they pass the final test of wisdom and power. They don them in order to honor Naenra Waerr.[3]
