Quick WalkthroughEdit
- Speak with Onmund.
- Speak with Enthir.
- Retrieve the Grand Staff of Charming from a random location.
- Return the staff to Enthir.
- Return the amulet to Onmund.
Detailed WalkthroughEdit
By now, you will have gotten to know Onmund, the friendly and singular Nord at the College of Winterhold. He has traded his family amulet to Enthir but now regrets his decision. Onmund will not tell you what he traded the amulet for, but asks for your help in getting his property back.
Speak with Enthir about this. Enthir offers you a deal: he will trade the amulet if you retrieve the Grand Staff of Charming from a certain location. The randomly selected location will usually include a boss-level caster foe guarding a chest containing the staff.
To complete the quest, retrieve the staff and return it to Enthir, who will in turn give you Onmund's amulet. Return the amulet to Onmund who will be grateful. The only reward for completing the quest is Onmund's friendship; once you return his amulet, he becomes available as a follower, as well as a potential candidate for marriage.
Possible staff locations are:
NotesEdit
- With a sufficiently high Speech skill or the Amulet of Articulation, Enthir can be persuaded to just return the amulet.
- Onmund's Amulet might be a different material, depending on the level you do this quest: such as a plain gold necklace, a silver emerald necklace, etc.
- It is possible to keep the Grand Staff of Charming for yourself by placing it on a weapon rack before returning to Enthir to trade it in for Onmund's Amulet. After obtaining the amulet, you can safely retrieve the staff from the weapon rack and do as you please with it.
- Unlike a few other (not College of Winterhold affiliated) quests which NPCs ask you to retrieve jewelry, you cannot take back Onmund's Amulet from him once you turn it in, via any means (pickpocketing, etc.). It vanishes from the game as soon as you hand it over to him.
BugsEdit
- You cannot speak to Enthir about the quest if The Staff of Magnus quest is active.
- If the staff is found before starting the quest, it will have weight, and cannot be removed from your inventory. The quest will not show an icon on the map and dialogue options are not available to return the staff to Enthir. To fix these issues, equip the staff, and activate a weapon rack. An icon will then appear, hinting to pick up the staff. Picking up the staff will update the quest journal, directing you to return the staff to Enthir.
- The Official Skyrim Patch, version 1.4, fixes this bug.
- This does not always work on Xbox One; even using the weapon rack trick will not fix the problem.
- The console command
setstage MGRAppOnmund01 30
will allow you to advance. Also, if you successfully persuade Enthir to give back the amulet and complete the quest, the staff is no longer considered a quest item and can be dropped/stored/sold normally. - If the quest has been taken, equip the staff, open console and type
player.drop 00029B91 1
. The staff will be dropped, and the quest continues as normal.

- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,
<Alias=LocationHold>
) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage MGRAppOnmund01 stage
, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest usingresetquest MGRAppOnmund01
.
