Karthwasten is the largest city in the Kingdom of the Reach and a historic center of trade. Though it suffered damage in the War of Bend'r Mahk, the city has since returned to being a wealthy and prosperous center of culture and commerce. Jarl Jona the Ansei-Ender of the Fire-Hand Clan legally rules Karthwasten from her seat at Dragonstar, but in practice the city is controlled by her Thane, Fomir the Voiceful. Fomir has sat in the Red Palace with King Barda's support since the tense resolution to the Second Siege of Karthwasten.

Prior to the War of Bend'r Mahk, Karthwasten was ruled by Hammerfell and was led by the Uteiwho is this? of the Tombawhat is this? that inhabited Karthwasten. Many Redguards remain displeased by this loss of territory and oppose Skyrim's claim to the city. Some, such as the secret agents of the Sogat Dur-Gada, are actively working to overthrow the city's current Nord rulers to return it to Hammerfell.

DocksEdit

A district of Karthwasten located along the banks of the Karth River northeast of the city. The port is home to a combined granary and Harbormaster's Office, where a map of the Reach can be purchased from the harbormaster, as well as a number of grain silos and some cottages housing mostly sailors, fishermen and dockers. Erald the Thief has an unowned bed in his house, available for use by travellers.

Red PalaceEdit

The Red Palace can be found in the middle of Karthwasten, where Thane Fomir the Voiceful and Prince Alrod, son of King Barda, rule the city. A few services can be found north of the palace, while the homes of several nobles can be found east of it.

Commercial DistrictEdit

The Commercial District, found just west of the Red Palace, houses a multitude of different shops. It's here that the town square, bazaar, local Guild of Fighters and Guild of Mages guildhalls, Imperial Cult chapel, and guard barracks as well as the majority of the city's services can be found.

The OutskirtsEdit

The Outskirts are found on the western edge of Karthwasten. The majority of the area is being used as farmland, though a small slum where city's impoverished people, primarily Redguards and Reachmen, reside can be found at it's northern end. Between the slums and the Commercial District can be found the Droopy Mare Inn, which serves as the headquarters of the Karthwasten Thieves Guild.

Getting There and AroundEdit

Passage to Karthwasten from Morrowind can be procured through Jurid Fast-Travel in Dagon Fel. You will arrive in the Karthwasten Docks, where you can talk to Bronding Wind-Catcher for a boat back to Dagon Fel, or you can talk to Haldine for a boat to Karthgad. Alternatively, you can walk to the road and head south to Karthwasten proper. Outside the north gate you will find the Karthwasten Stables, where you can speak to Aurius Jaronich to take a carriage ride to Dragonstar.

Places of Interest Around KarthwastenEdit

To the north of Karthwasten you'll find the Boar Snout Clan Manor. The Gilded-Shield Manor can be found just east of the city, though you'll need to exit through the southern gate and then follow the road east to get there.

NotesEdit

  • Karthwasten originally appeared in Arena and reappears in Skyrim and ESO. However, compared to their appearances in the latter games, Karthwasten's location in Project Tamriel is swapped with Markarth's, as it was in Arena.
