Alval Uvani

Alval Uvani is an extremely arrogant Dunmer battlemage, strong in the arts of Destruction magic. He travels around Cyrodiil each week, earning his keep as a "trader". He will be your target in A Matter of Honor, and a formidable opponent unless you exploit his allergy to honey and paralyze him with mead. His full schedule is detailed below.

Uvani's attire comprises a burgundy linen shirt, burgundy linens, and a pair of thick cowhide shoes. He carries his house key and a decent amount of gold, and he wields a leveled dagger which will bear a harmful enchantment at higher levels. Alval has an arsenal of three leveled spells, one from the Mysticism school, one from the Restoration school, and one from the Destruction school (always strongest for Alval's skill level). Additionally, his Black Hand ability gives him a decent resistance to both magical and normal attacks.

When you approach Alval, he will make it clear that he has no interest in talking to you and will threaten you by saying, "You get any closer and I'll turn your bones to ash. Back off." If you attempt to engage him in conversation, he will refuse to speak to you: "I have no time for your pathetic attempts at small talk. Now walk away, before I get... nasty." If you successfully paralyze him, he will express his frustrations when you approach him: "Can't... Can't move... Body frozen... Must have been... the damn... Mead..." If you then enter conversation with him while he is paralyzed, he will blame you for paralyzing him: "No! You filthy guttersnipe! You won't get away with this! By Sithis, if I could only move my arms, I'd rip that smile right off your face!" This hints that he is involved in the Dark Brotherhood.

Alval's ScheduleEdit

As he travels around Cyrodiil, Alval Uvani can be found at various locations, both before and during the related quest. The schedule that you are provided with alongside your Dead Drop Orders lists the following locations:

Alval traveling the roads of Cyrodiil
Morndas/Tirdas -- Bravil -- The Lonely Suitor Lodge
Middas/Turdas -- Skingrad -- West Weald Inn
Fredas/Loredas -- Bruma -- Olav's Tap and Tack
Sundas -- Leyawiin -- Alval Uvani's House

While this is broadly accurate, it will vary depending on when you intercept him and whether you fast-travel, wait or follow him. A more detailed schedule is provided below, assuming the starting point is 23:59 on Sundas at his house in Leyawiin and that you follow him without fast-travel or waiting. Either of the latter actions will usually cause him to teleport directly to his next location, if he's on his way to somewhere.

Once the clock strikes midnight and the day turns to Morndas, Alval will leave his house and start on the first leg of his journey, heading to Bravil. The journey along the Green Road takes him about 14 hours, which sees him arrive at The Lonely Suitor Lodge at 2pm. After wandering around for two hours, at 4pm he sits at one of the tables downstairs and starts eating. He keeps on going until midnight, at which point he simply moves upstairs and continues to eat until the next midnight.

As Middas begins, he sets off for Skingrad. After about 10 hours, he reaches Fort Virtue and turns west onto the Gold Road. After another 7 hours, at 5pm he finally reaches the West Weald Inn and will immediately sit down to eat. As in Bravil, he keeps on eating, alternating between the two floors, until the next midnight.

As soon as the day turns into Fredas, he hits the road once more, this time heading for Bruma. The journey takes him more than a day, and he arrives at Olav's Tap and Tack around 1am on Loredas. Once again he will immediately start eating and continue to do so until midnight.

With Sundas now under way, he prepares for the longest journey yet: back to his house in Leyawiin. Unfortunately, due to the distance, he will never make it. After heading down the Silver Road at midnight, he reaches Sercen around 5:30am and turns east onto the Red Ring Road. He follows it clockwise until the crossroads just west of Fort Sejanus, when at around 12:30 he heads south onto the Yellow Road. He keeps going until 5pm, at which point he will be nearby the unmarked Malada road. He will now stop and eat continuously until midnight.

Now that it's Morndas again, he heads to Bravil by retracing his steps, reaching the Talos Bridge around 5am and the Old Bridge around 8:30am. From here he heads south and reaches Bravil around 4pm.

If you do use fast-travel or the wait function, it is possible to meet him at his designated locations from midnight on the first day listed in his schedule document. In this case, he will be found eating from 1am to 11am, wandering around from 11am to 4pm, and then eating again from 4pm to midnight. He will then spend the second day constantly eating. The only exception is his routine in Leyawiin: after eating from 1am to 9am, he will head to sleep in his bedroom on the second floor. After waking up at 5pm he will have another long dinner before departing at midnight.

NotesEdit

  • As he is not marked as essential at any point, it is possible for him to die on his travels due to enemy encounters, especially at higher levels. His low Responsibility may also cause him to steal food in inns, thus landing him in trouble with the law and potentially also leading to his death. If he dies before the related quest starts, it will automatically complete as soon as you pick up your orders.
  • In the game, it is stated that Alval is either a Speaker or Silencer in the Dark Brotherhood's Black Hand, although the robes in his house seem to point to the former. However, in the Construction Set, Alval is not listed as belonging to any Dark Brotherhood-related factions. In addition, killing Alval before you receive The Purification quest will not cause you to be expelled from the Dark Brotherhood or invoke Sithis' wrath. In fact, you can even kill him in order to join the Dark Brotherhood. The information listed in the summary box is the Construction Set faction, because this is the information that controls the NPC's disposition, dialogue, and responses to scripts; see Factions for details.
  • Two unused lines of dialogue exist for Alval in the Construction Set that cannot be heard during normal gameplay. The first unused line is a greeting that cannot be heard since his other greetings take precedence over this line of dialogue. He would have introduced himself and discussed his interests by saying, "Alval Uvani. I'm an evil wizard. I like blowing things up. And I have LOTS of time on my hands, since I'm LOADED with gold. So I blow things up. And burn them. And frost them. And shock the living daylights out of them. But I'm a smart, law-abiding evil wizard, because I only blow up my own stuff. So don't get any ideas about murdering me and looting my gold... Aside from the fact that I'll kick your ass... it's against the law, and you'll rot in jail for it. So how do like THEM apples?" The second unused line is his response to the Leyawiin topic which cannot be heard since he always exits dialogue immediately after conversation begins. When asked about the town, he would have mentioned that his neighbors complain about him: "My neighbors grumble a lot, but what can they do? No law against practicing my skills. Thinking about sticking your paw in my pocket? Go ahead. I'll blow you to cream corn, and the Law will love me for it."
  • Alval's schedule was probably a bit different during development. There are unused eat packages meant for him that would've activated in Anvil, Chorrol, and Cheydinhal. Moreover, Uvani belongs to the citizen factions of the Imperial City, Chorrol, Anvil, and Cheydinhal, despite the fact that he can never be found in those locations. This is likely a leftover from a more intricate schedule.
  • Boar meat has a script attached to it in the final game that basically serves no purpose. The script was meant to render Alval paralyzed when boar meat is added to his inventory. However, this script does not work, and boar meat is not zero-weight and therefore cannot be reverse-pickpocketed onto Alval anyway.
