Westmark Moor (also called Markwasten Moor)[1][2] is a rural region in southeastern Rivenspire, in the province of High Rock. It is specifically found along the Great Bay area where it meets the Wrothgarian Mountains to the south. The region is mostly farmland, with its largest settlements being Hoarfrost Downs and Fell's Run. But southeast toward the coast are large gravesites and burial grounds,[3] from the Sanguine Barrows and Tribulation Crypt where Rivenspire's nobility are buried,[4][5] to the legendary dungeon called the Crypts of Hearts.[3] The latter is considered part of the Western Reach.[6][7]

HistoryEdit

Some of the region's oldest ruins and landmarks include the Orc's Finger Ruins, Ayleid ruins known for a local legend about an Orc warrior and his ill-fated fight with a lich.[8] The Ayleids lived in Rivenspire during ancient times,[9] presumingly from the Ayleid Diaspora, when the elves fled Cyrodiil to High Rock from the Alessians in 1E 361.[10][11] Another ruin is the Lorkrata Hills, which were built by King Berthulic, who ruled one of the first free Breton kingdoms in the early First Era after the Direnni Hegemony's decline[12] in 1E 500.[13] The Crypt of Hearts was built over a cavern that housed the Star Teeth, artifacts of Ayleid origin and held in high importance by them.[14]

The Bretons of Markwasten Moor and the Shornhelm region have a long and storied history, from the time of legends with the Trammeling of the Giants, to the early First Era, when they partook in the Charge of the Montclair Knights in the Battle of Glenumbra Moors circa 1E 482 and the Purge of the Wyrd-Hags in the Year of Sun's Death (1E 668).[1] The Sanguine Barrows and nearby Tribulation Crypt in Westmark Moor were built to inter Rivenspire's nobles, including members of Houses Dorell, Montclair, and Tamrith. Since the kingdom's houses often clash with each other, the Sanguine Barrows are constantly the site of feuds.[4] One of Westmark Moor's most well-known families are the Edralds, a storied family of some renown.[15]

After the All Flags Navy landed in the Systres, they set to work on building their great fleet to destroy the Sload of Thras throughout the 1E 2240s. While most of Tamriel's shipwrights were on the Systres, several shipyards were also on the mainland. Most notable were the ones in Rivenspire,[16] specifically in the settlement now known as Shipwright's Regret. Nowadays, the abandoned harbor is haunted by restless spirits and ghosts.[17]

One example of a feud in the Sanguine Barrows was during Mid Year in 2E 551, when House Montclair and Tamrith fought for a site intended for family members that died the same day. The Bloody Funeral remains a blight on each houses' history.[4] Markwasten Moor became the site of a pivotal battle during Ranser's War of 2E 566, when the eponymous King of Shornhelm fought Emeric and his early Daggerfall Covenant. When the Orcs of Orsinium intervened, the Battle of Markwasten Moor ended with Ranser's forces annihilated.[18] Unknown to historians at the time, Ranser's true last stand was on the site now known as Traitor's Tor in northern Westmark Moor.[19]

In the late Third Era, the Crypts of Hearts fell under Skyrim's borders during the War of the Bend'r-mahk.[6] After the war, Skyrim took several miles of land in High Rock and allowed its counts to take control. Very little territory had changed hands by 3E 433[20] but by 4E 201, the Crypts of Hearts fell in the Kingdom of Shornhelm's borders.[21]

Village of Markwasten MoorEdit

Markwasten Moor during the Imperial Simulacrum

There is a settlement called Markwasten Moor in central High Rock, just southeast of Shornhelm and west of the Great Bay.[22] It has been active since at least the late Second Era when it was known as Marnstern Moor.[23]

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the village of Markwasten Moor was an active settlement. It was ruled by Lord Tristyrick and had a rivalry with Thorkan Park. The only temple in the settlement was the Brotherhood of Temperance.[22] Markwasten Moor was neighbored by several settlements, such as Portdun Creek to the east and Shornhelm to the northwest.[24]
