Chillrend

Chillrend is a unique glass sword found during The Pursuit in Mercer Frey's house in a display case with an expert-level lock. It deals frost damage as well as having a chance to paralyze anything it strikes. Tempering Chillrend requires one refined malachite and the Arcane Blacksmith perk, with the tempering being twice as effective if you have gained the Glass Smithing perk. It would be identical in appearance to a glass sword were it not for its blue hue.

NotesEdit

  • Chillrend also appeared in Oblivion with a similar enchantment as a reward for successfully completing the quest The Killing Field.
  • The level 46+ version of Chillrend has the highest base damage of any one-handed sword in vanilla Skyrim. The heavier dragonbone sword from Dawnguard equals its base damage, while only the 60+ version of Miraak's Sword from Dragonborn surpasses it.
    • When including enchantments, Chillrend is the most devastating one-handed weapon available as-is, regardless of add-ons. (Besides the Dawnguard Rune AxeDG or Dragonbane, when used on undead or dragons, respectively.)
  • The name of the unique enchantment on the weapon is called "Frostfeed".
    • The frost damage effect on Chillrend is affected by the Augmented Frost perks in the Destruction perk tree. The damage will increase to 37 with the first, and 45 with the second perk.
  • Chillrend has a unique frost sound effect and has frosty mists falling from the blade when drawn.
  • Shadowfoot SanctumCC contains a special holder for this item.
  • It is not necessarily a requirement to join the Thieves Guild to obtain this weapon: with creative jumping from a brazier in front of the nearby Temple of Mara, you can mount the roof of the Temple, then leap onto the locked gate and balance yourself and then jump over (or use Whirlwind Sprint) to the roof of Mercer's house and ascend it until you can hop down to the ledge with the door leading to his house. From there, pick the lock, enter his house and head down to the basement to retrieve Chillrend.
  • The part of the enchantment of Chillrend that induces paralysis is not a guarantee. Instead, it functions identically to other weapons with an enchantment of paralysis: there is a 26% chance it will paralyze the target struck with the weapon.

BugsEdit

  • Unlike ordinary frost damage enchantments, Chillrend's frost damage does not damage the target's stamina.
  • The frost sound effect may loop indefinitely for various reasons, including rapidly switching between Chillrend and other weapons.
    • Transforming into a Werewolf or Vampire Lord temporarily ends the sound loop until a save is loaded.
