Detailed WalkthroughEdit

When you talk to Captain Rana, she sounds worried, saying that it is going to be a hard road to Davon's Watch. Ask her what the first step is and she tells you that you need to warn Davon's Watch of the Covenant invasion while she rallies the locals. You need to go the nearby watchtower and tell the Pact soldiers to light signal fires. The watchtower can be found by following the northern road out of Dhalmora, a smaller nearby settlement.

Arriving at the tower you find out that the Pact soldiers stationed there are all dead, killed during what seems to be a surprise attack. The Covenant is already in Bal Foyen! Search inside the watchtower and read the watchtower ledger in order to learn that the soldiers had run low on kindlepitch powder and that you need to speak to Quartermaster Urona to restock the supply. You can also search Supply Chest here if you want, only to find there's nothing left:

<This chest is empty. All of the tower's supplies are gone.>

Urona, who can be found at Fort Zeren, has however more bad news for you as the fort is all out of kindlepitch. She sends you to get kindlepitch powder from the Bal Foyen docks instead. At this point you can also find Darj the Hunter, Geilund, Halmaera, Rexus, Eiman, Denskar, Littrek and Aera there.

Travel to the docks and find Quartermaster Lineem. At this point you can also find Hoknir, Runs-in-Wild, Sergeant Seyne, Captain Rana, Rolunda, and Trynhild there.

Although hesitant to help you at first, when you tell her about the impending Covenant attack, Lineem gives you the needed kindlepitch and is willing to show you a fast way to the signal fires. She leads you across the bridge to a secret smuggler passage which leads straight to the signal fires. The supply tunnel is on the east side of the docks next to some crates.

When you exit the tunnel, you will find yourself not far from the Covenant's landing site. As you make your way to light the fires, you need to deal with some Covenant soldiers who are guarding the area. There are two signal fires to light. The east fire is to the northeast as you exit the tunnel. The west fire is across the bridge.

Once both are lit, return to Dhalmora to report to Captain Rana. Instead of Rana you will be directed to Aera Earth-Turner who stands next to the bank by the Dhalmora wayshrine and the farm. She is visibly concerned and tells you her whole family has gone to defend Fort Zeren and the Bal Foyen dockyards. You will be needed at one of these places and have to choose where to head next. Aera rewards you with the Earth-Turner Axe and some gold.

TriviaEdit

Quest title is a reference to "One if by land, two if by sea", a line from the poem Paul Revere's Ride by Henery W Longfellow:

"Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower, as a signal light,
One, if by land, and two, if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be..."
