Hakoshae (also known as Valley Guard)[1] is a settlement found in the region of Anequina, within the province of Elsweyr. It is neighbored by several settlements, including Rimmen to the north, Darkarn Place to the southwest, and Alabaster in the southeast.[2]
It is one of the few villages across Northern Elsweyr that were built by the Akaviri refugees that fled to Elsweyr following the death of Emperor-Potentate Savirien-Chorak in 2E 430. Hakoshae is an isolated and quiet community that promotes their Akaviri background with pride. It is populated by Rim-Men with a very loose and distant background from the Tsaesci that were contemporary with the Potentate.[3]
HistoryEdit
Second EraEdit
The Akaviri escaped into Elsweyr during the brief reign of Emperor Attrebus, whose decree was to persecute the remaining Akaviri, eventually driving them out of the Imperial City and into Northern Elsweyr. The Khajiit granted them asylum across the region, including in Hakoshae.[4] For roughly a century, the town believed their Magnate descended from Proconsul Beloren-Kaie, who was one of the children of Savirien-Chorak.[3][5] In reality, the Magnate dynasty came from Lein-Barduik, Kaie's bodyguard that ran away when the Proconsul was assassinated by the Morag Tong. Claiming his name and title, Lein-Barduik founded the town of Hakoshae, along the Rim Territories south of Rimmen.[6] The people of Hakoshae lived in peace, away from Khajiit and Imperial politics. These people, along with other refugees, were known as the "Rim-Men" to the Khajiit.[4]
To continue their Akaviri tradition, Magnate Lein-Barduik began their first Proving Festival, where the people must prove themselves to their ancestors. The Proof of Reverence involves placing a paper lotus into the Darkarn river, notifying one's ancestors of participating in the festival. The Proof of Strength involves collecting a nearby flower that grows in a senche-lion lair, and the Proof of Wisdom requires solving a riddle.[7] In the final phase of the festival, the participants ask their ancestors to judge whether they have honored them worthily and dutifully.[8] In fact, the ancient Akaviri rites invoked by the Proving Festival in this stage are able to compel the ancestor spirits to enter the realm of the living and confront their descendants directly.[6] Lein-Barduik was confronted by Beloren-Kaie, who scorned him for his betrayal. In response, Barduik cast him back into the realm of the dead, where he never saw him again. From then, the Magnate canceled the Proving Festival and left it forgotten to the people. The Magnate later passed away, and his lineage continued to rule over Hakoshae.[6]
During the Interregnum around 2E 582, the town of Hakoshae was run by Magnate Feina-Darak, a descendant of Lein-Barduik. At this point, the Tsaesci were no longer present. After many years of marriage between their Imperial subjects, they were absorbed into their culture and people. On a fateful day, Magnate Feina-Darak found a lost text referencing the Proving Festival. And using her resource, she commenced the town's first festival since Lein-Barduik's time. All the while, a descendant of the Proconsul's assassin, Ashur of the Quiet Blade arrived into Hakoshae, to learn whether the rumor that Chorak's lineage was still alive. Enlisting the help of a wandering traveler, the two investigated Hakoshae, while the latter partook in the Proving Festival. After breaking into the Magnate's home, Feina-Darak was abducted by the spirit of Beloren-Kaie and taken to the Hakoshae Tombs. Here, the Proconsul called Feina-Darak a liar and revealed the truth. Barduik's shade attempted to stop Ashur and the warrior from learning, but it failed. In the end, Feina-Darak was spared, announced her true heritage, and renounced her title as Magnate. But because of her talent as a leader, the people convinced her to stay as the Magnate, and the Proving Festival continued. Ashur left Hakoshae knowing that his grandfather's legacy was preserved.[7]
Sometime later, remnants of the Kamali that served Ada'Soom Dir-Kamal in 2E 572 organized a militia and re-surfaced somewhere in Cyrodiil. In defiance against Attrebus' successors, these Kamali recruited the Rim-Men across Elsweyr into their ranks, likely including Hakoshae. This militia sought to rebuild the Empire before the Interregnum. Their revolution was successful, albeit short-lived as they were ultimately de-throned like other Emperors of the Interregnum, and the Khajiit reclaimed those given territories after several bloody wars across the Rim.[4]
Third EraEdit
During the Imperial Simulacrum, it was known as Valley Guard and was ruled by Lady Moahin. It had a rivalry with Darkarn Place.[1]
