controlsEdit

On xbox 360, sprint also makes your horse gallop and right bumper(RB) is to use dragon shouts.RIM 15:43, 5 October 2011 (UTC) Also, Y makes you jump on Xbox, same as Oblivion.RIM 15:54, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

where'd you hear that? (I plead LazynessEddie The Head 16:00, 7 October 2011 (UTC))
In the many reviews of "one hour plays", a lot of the journalists mentioned how jumping was greatly improved visually, one of them said that Y was to jump so that it would be familiar for Oblivion players to play as most of the controls are unchanged. Also, on the table, Y has not been used yet.RIM 16:23, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
This http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2011/oct/17/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-preview?newsfeed=true has a number of new controls revealed. RIM 19:44, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
Anyone know the controlls for menus on the PC version ? Me, my roomate, and everyone in my dorm that got the game seems to be unable to get the damn thing past the char creation menu because the mouse doesn't work. — Unsigned comment by 71.199.167.104 (talk) at 23:09 on November 11, 2011
I have problems with assigning spells to M1 or M2. With weapons it works in a way it is said (you get, what you click), but with the spells the spell won't "let go" the hand. Nuisance. It works, if you eqip a bow, and than exchange it with two single handed weapons. Messy. — Unsigned comment by 93.103.95.129 (talk) at 11:11 on November 24, 2011

PC: HotkeysEdit

I found that the numpad can both mark and use hotkeyed items (provided that Num Lock is on).

It might be worth adding a paragraph about setting up hotkeyed items because it is not obvious that you have to mark an item as a Favorite first, then assign a slot# in the Quick Menu. — Unsigned comment by 107.10.194.20 (talk) at 19:59 on November 20, 2011

Important:
Reassigning certain keys from the default will cause other functions not to work. For instance, I prefer my "3rd party toggle" key to be V instead of F; however, this causes the use of the F key when adding a Favorite not to work. Take care when reassigning; check all the other keys within the menus to ensure they function correctly. WalB 11:19, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
The problem with the "F" key is that it does two different things. It selects / deselects Favorites but it also is used to toggle POV view. If you have remapped your toggle POV key then that is the same key you will now use for Favorites even though the game interface still says it is the "F" key. — Unsigned comment by 70.137.21.186 (talk) at 17:50 on 16 April 2012

Dragging ItemsEdit

I am looking for a way to drag items the way the y key did in Oblivion. Is there any? --93.232.186.96 04:39, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

It's just keeping the activate button (default E) pressed and using the mouse for moving. --Alfwyn 21:53, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, there's no way to select an item from your inventory and to "click and hold" to drag it directly from there, as you could with Oblivion. I've had to drop the item first, then click and hold to drag.WalB 11:21, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Even dragging stuff works differently, too. If you aim the crosshairs at a sword's hilt and hold down the A button, for instance, you'll grab it by the middle of the blade and drag it from there instead. Makes trying to put things on weapon racks (which is apparently impossible anyways, except for those red oval ones) a pain in the ass. 74.162.92.246 04:51, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Setting up a controllerEdit

I was wondering if anyone could write a section similar to that found on Oblivion:Controls with instructions on how to set up controllers with Xpadder. 66.57.40.248 09:48, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

You don't need to. Skyrim automatically detects and configures XBox controllers for use with Win7 — Unsigned comment by 184.58.21.194 (talk) at 03:38 on January 2, 2012
I only have the PS3 version of Skyrim & was wondering about the PC version. Will it accept a Logitech Rumblepad cordless controller for the PC or only the XBox controller. I had a lot of problems with my PC version of Oblivion getting the Xpadder software to work correctly so I was real hesitant to buy the PC version of Skyrim. Also does anyone know if the new Elder Scrolls Online will be able to use a controller hooked up to the PC? I would much rather use a controller than a keyboard & mouse.

Keys for select items count on PCEdit

On PC Home and End keys work for "fast" selection of item count. This usefull for increase Speech skill to trade multiple items one by one (Enter, Home, Enter sequence to sell 1 item from 100). --Anonymous — Unsigned comment by Solarisomnium (talkcontribs) at 19:38 on December 4, 2011

I've added this information, because it seems very valuable for me ;-) The "Page Up/Down" keys are also usefull, the formula: round up(MAX/4) guessed on the basis of some samples: MAX:STEP, 6:2, 8:2, 10:3, 11:3, 19:5, 23:6, 31:8, 47:12, 125:32 --Psychomc 19:23, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
On Xbox the bumpers can be used to increment/decrement the item count. Not sure, but I think it jumps the same as the Page Up/Down keys. 76.70.102.43 23:18, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Hotkey: Dual wield bugEdit

It works with 2 identical unimproved weapons, they are shown in the inventory as:

Daedric Sword (2)

i favourite them (F), open the favorites (Q), assigned (1) to this entry.

Now i can draw one sword with (1) the other with (1) again.

Perfect for dual-wield if you have also spells or must change to sword+shield and back.

but now i improved both swords (exact the same values).

the hotkeys doesnt work anymore for these 2 swords, i can only draw one, and then the hotkey is gone :-(

no dual wield anymore...

workaround: use 2 different weapons: other base type, rename it (enchanting), ... but then you have to use 2 hotkeys, one for each wepaon

anyone else have encountered this? btw: PC (v1.3) — Unsigned comment by Psychomc (talkcontribs) at 23:01 on December 14, 2011

I was having the same problem with a pair of Ancient Nord Swords I had just upgraded to Superior on a new character. Every time I switched to my bow (would've probably happened with shields and spells too), and then tried to switch back to the swords, only the mainhand one would be equipped while the other was unfavorited. I seem to have it working properly now though. Not sure if this is what fixed it, but I un-faved both swords the re-faved them. The fave list and inventory still show only the mainhand sword as if the bug is still occuring, but both are drawn and the damage is displayed correctly. Hopefully it keeps working as it should.
UPDATE: While switching out both swords to use a two-handed weapon is no longer causing problems, the bug still seems to occur when switching out just one, at least when readying a spell; haven't tried a shield yet. Valkaine
That is because when you name things, even if you name 2 of the same items with the same name, it considers each item a separate, different item. VycDarkshadow (talk) 17:36, 13 October 2012 (GMT)

Faulty informationEdit

hey just looking at this page, i see a couple of mistakes.

"[button] makes your character jump. It will also deplete your stamina"

Jumping does not deplete stamina.

"Right Hand | Left Click" "Left Hand | Right Click"

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. If I'm mistaken its because i switched it right away but why on earth would the default be set to this? — Unsigned comment by 24.1.194.164 (talk) at 04:22 on December 17, 2011

I edited the page to have what I believe is the correct information. switch it back if i'm wrong. -max — Unsigned comment by 24.1.194.164 (talk) at 04:24 on December 17, 2011
In the default controls your character is right-handed. This means that, yes, the left mouse button is used for the right hand. Narzul 04:34, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
It is very counterintuitive if you think about it if you aren't actually right-handed and/or you don't use 2-hander/sword&board (both in my case) - but it is definitely the default ;) Themendios 05:50, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
Ok sorry about that then. That's really dumb though. — Unsigned comment by 24.1.194.164 (talk) at 04:56 on December 18, 2011
Different problem: In the Character Menu, to favorite stuff on the 360 you hit the Y button (Or the triangle button on the PS3, I'd assume), not the stick. I don't know how to mess with the table or put the button pictures in it, though, so I'mma leave that to someone who does. 74.162.92.246 09:43, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Save on Character MenuEdit

What does this setting mean? Are they talking about the Character Creation menu at the start of the game, the menu that opens when you hit B (on the 360), or what? EDIT: Derp. The "B" menu is apparently called the Character Menu. I just didn't read the controls thoroughly enough. Nevermind.74.162.92.246 09:31, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Drawing weaponEdit

At least on the PC you can draw your weapon/ready your magic by double clicking one of the mouse buttons. I think this should be added. --Killfetzer 09:46, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Isn't a single click enough? --Psychomc 11:20, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
yes, it is. — Unsigned comment by 79.50.63.2 (talk) at 22:05 on January 5, 2012

PS3 Jargon and official button iconsEdit

Anyone else feel that the current verbiage for R3 and L3 is not entirely uniform? The L3 and R3 are named buttons on the PS3 controller, and constitute clicking down on the joysticks to activate. It would be nice if we had official XBOX and PS3 controller icons for both controllers. Heck, how about the same for keyboard keys? The files would be small, something on the order of 1k or less, so it shouldn't affect page load. Thoughts? 148.168.127.10 16:45, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

PC Menu BugEdit

Does any one else have a bug where the Y and B buttons on the 360 controller reverse while in menus and dialogs(So B favorites and Y backs out)? For note, the keyboard controls work fine and in both configurations the graphics display the normal control scheme (so Y favorites and B backs out).--67.86.15.27 03:39, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Gavriel

Picking up several itemsEdit

Is there a combination of keys which allows you to pick-up several items in one hit ? Example: when you have a pile of coins on a table, you have to hit (E) for each coin where you could hit a combination of keys like SHIFT+E which would pick every item close to the pointed one ? — Unsigned comment by Krodranker (talkcontribs) at 17:27 on February 15, 2012

Dual Casting Spells (Anyone willing to move this to the Restoration talk page?)Edit

I noticed in some video after dual cast a healing spell an upgraded spell will go to one of the hand. I try to do it with destruction spell with my xbox but it fail, can anyone tell me how to do it?(Vvardfell 08:43, 4 April 2012 (UTC))

You apparently have the Restoration Dual Casting Perk. Each school of magic has it's own dual casting perk. You can't you your Restoration DC Perk to DC a Destruction spell. You need the Destruction DC Perk to do that. Please try not to post questions like this on the talk pages of pages that are irrelevant. This probably belongs on the Restoration talk page. --Pupdude Shall Pwn You! (Talk) 23:13, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Additional CommandsEdit

It doesn't appear as if anyone has made a spot for future ammendments to this page to be placed, so here's a little niche for that..

In the shops section, PS3 uses the R2 and L2 buttons to shift up and down through "steps" of the inventory, though rarely on a 1/4 scale.Irrelevant 09:14, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Default PC Gamepad SensitivityEdit

I just recently went into the "gameplay" section of the settings and reset everything to default. The default sensitivity for the gamepad apparently changed, and it's now way more sensitive then it used to be.

Does anyone know what the default sensitivity is? — Unsigned comment by 98.248.158.6 (talk) at 06:12 on 19 June 2012

Does it matter? Just start adjusting the sensitivity until it reaches your liking. --Pupdude Shall Pwn You! (Talk) 23:16, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Flashing screen when in First-Person perspectiveEdit

Sometimes, when i enter first-person perspective, my screens flashes rapidly, even when nothing is going on around me. I've noticed this whether i've had a spell in one hand and a sword in the other, or a bow in my hands, or even if i have no weapons drawn whatsoever. It doesn't do this all the time, but consistantly enough to be a real bother, as it even happens during cutscenes, like the one you learn Dragonrend in.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, how can it be fixed? It didn't used to do this until one of the patches (maybe 1.6-something?). Please let me know. VycDarkshadow (talk) 17:45, 13 October 2012 (GMT)

I've paid a little more attention to when it happens, and i've noticed it seems to happen more often if there's fire on my screen, or if i have a spell in my offhand. Wondering if there's something wrong with my settings, because it seems no one else has had this happen, or they haven't responded if they have. VycDarkshadow (talk) 03:23, 16 October 2012 (GMT)
Yeah nope never had this, I'm playing a pure mage atm so i can look for it but otherwise sorry no ideas for a fix. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 03:34, 16 October 2012 (GMT)
Well, thanks anyway. I'm glad i'm not epileptic, because the screen flashes fast enough to trigger a seizure. And like i said before, it didn't use to flash at all, until one of the more-recent patches several months ago (don't remember which one), and i can't remember if it was before or after i got Dawnguard. And it ONLY happens in first-person perspective (which i only use during some cutscenes or if i need to make a really tough shot with my bow). NEVER in third-person. VycDarkshadow (talk) 04:52, 18 October 2012 (GMT)
Okies well I play almost completely in FP, and have DG and HF and have not had this at all... so it doesn't seem to be a DG or patch issue... tried simply changing the graphics if ur on PC? or on Xbox resetting the Graphics by holding down A when the console starts up until you reach the Bethesda logo. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 04:59, 18 October 2012 (GMT)
I'm on PC, and i think i fixed the problem. I saved at one of my flashing points. Trial-and-errored the graphics, noticing it didn't act up on Medium settings, but it would on High, and made notes on the differences in settings. After about 20 minutes of tweaking things, i eventually found out the "Object Fade", defaulted at 7, would cause the flashing, but when i put it down to 6, the flashing stopped. So i set the graphics back to High, and turned down the Object Fade from 7 to 6, and no more flashing. Thanks a lot for the help! VycDarkshadow (talk) 05:35, 18 October 2012 (GMT)
Found out it wasn't the Object Fade after all. Turned anti-aliasing off. Problem seems to be solved for good now.VycDarkshadow (talk) 01:47, 19 October 2012 (GMT)

Dragon Riding ControlsEdit

Pop-up Box Menu Misc. ControlsEdit

Earlier, I read that the keys Y and N (for PC) would work for selecting "Yes" or "No" in the menu when smithing, smelting, tempering, enchanting, etc. Tested it in my game and it seems to work, although I am running a few mods, I would like confirmation. I didn't see these controls on the wiki for this page, but I thought I'd share since it does get a bit tedious when you're trying to craft thousands of armor/weapons on the PC with the mouse. Would greatly appreciate anyone who'd be willing to confirm and/or add this info to the wiki if it's necessary. 173.230.108.25 08:45, 17 May 2013 (GMT)

Yes, I can confirm that hitting the Y or N key on PC is the same as clicking the "yes" or "no" buttons when confirming that you want to craft the selected item. I'm not sure where that info would be placed on this page, and I also don't know if this is true for versions of Skyrim for languages other than English. --Xyzzy Talk 18:31, 17 May 2013 (GMT)

PS3; Pause menu; System; HelpEdit

On the PS3. I went to the "system" section at the pause menu to see the controls and information in the "help" section and everything is totally thrown around. Like I press "Alchemy" to learn about it and get information on it but it brings up "training". Or when I select "archery" it brings up information on "blocking". Its all scrambled. I went through the list to try to find "dragon riding" but its not even there even though its listed. It brings up information on "vampirism" instead. Cjesseg (talk) 02:07, 21 March 2014 (GMT)

Dragon RidingEdit

Am I seeing this right or is there no actual "controlling" the dragon in the "dragon controls" section? Cool, you can ride a dragon, but you can't control where it goes? Pretty lame. Cjesseg (talk) 02:11, 21 March 2014 (GMT)

That's correct. The dragon flies where it wants. You can only control what it attacks. --Xyzzy Talk 04:58, 21 March 2014 (GMT)

Non-English Keyboard ShortcutsEdit

In the English version of Skyrim, when using a smelter, you can rapidly create several of the same ingot by using E (Create) then Y (Yes) back and forth. In the German version of the game, the E still works, but neither the Y nor the J (Ja) serve as a quick "Yes" answer (nor does any other key)—you have to use the mouse to say yes or no to the prompt. The same thing goes for other menus, like improving weapons/armour. Can anyone confirm? Is it the same for all non-English versions of Skyrim? Robin Hood  (talk) 03:33, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
