Sam Guevenne at the Bannered Mare

Sam Guevenne is a Breton conjurer that you will meet in a tavern, where he will challenge you to a drinking contest. The exact place where you find him is randomly chosen due to Skyrim's radiant story mechanic, but it may be the first tavern you enter after hitting level 14. Once the game has chosen his location, he will usually remain there until met. Likely inns or taverns include the ones in cities, depending on how many side quests you have done and how closely you are following the main questline. He is the author of a note.

After you have accepted and won the challenge, he will say that you are good company to drink with and will invite you on a trip. This triggers the quest A Night To Remember, which will hold several surprises. After completing this quest, it is revealed that he is actually the Daedric Prince Sanguine, who was just looking for some fun.

Once you reach level 14, you may meet Sam in any pub or tavern. Approaching him, he will challenge you:

"If you're looking for a challenge, you've come to the right place."
"You look like someone who can hold their liquor. How about a friendly contest to win a staff?"
I don't really feel like drinking...
"Well come back when you do, my friend. Come back when you do."
A drinking contest? You don't stand a chance!
"Ha! We'll see about that. This is a special brew, very strong stuff. Let's get started."
Here we go.
"One down, my friend. One down."
A second drink. Easy enough.
"So says you. I think I've hit my limit on these things. Tell you what, one more and you win the contest."
One more. No problemsh.
"Wow. You've really done it. The staff is yours."
Thrash grape!
"You know, you're a fun person to drink with. I know this great little place where the wine flows like water. We should head there. Hey, you don't look so good..."

You will then black out, awaking in the Temple of Dibella in Markarth. The quest continues from here, sending you all across Skyrim, picking up the pieces of what you and Sam got up to that night. In the quest's conclusion, you will arrive in Misty Grove and speak to Sam once more.

"You're here! I was beginning to think you might not make it."
It was quite a trip. Where are we?
"I thought you might not remember your first trip here. You had a big night. I think you've definitely earned the staff."
I have all the things needed to repair it.[nb 1]
"Oh, the Hagraven feather and so on. You can throw all those out. You see...

Sam will then reveal his true identity and continue the conversation, giving you the Sanguine Rose and completing the quest.


  • ^  This line and Sam's response are remnants of cut content from a previous version of A Night To Remember, in which the note Repair Supplies would have been used to gather ingredients to repair the staff, the mentioned hagraven feather included.
  • Internal data refers to him under the names Samwell and Sammy as well.
  • In a random encounter after A Night To Remember, Deep-In-His-Cups reveals that you and Sam dared him to enter a bandit camp and steal a hat after breaking into the Temple of Dibella.


  • The miscellaneous quest prompt to start A Night To Remember refers to Sam Guevenne as "Sam Guenvere".
