Trolls are large, ape-like humanoids endowed with three eyes. Their powerful arms and claws deal massive physical damage. Trolls are very strong defensively, with high health and the ability to rapidly regenerate all their health during combat. Their greatest vulnerability is to fire, which not only damages them but also impairs their capacity to self-heal.
Keep your health full when fighting trolls, as two or three of their blows can be lethal and occur in lightning-quick succession. Other tactics are to maximize your armor and incorporate fire damage, whether by spell or enchantment. If you have more than one fire-enchanted weapon to choose from, lighter, faster weapons may be more effective than heavier, slower ones. Using hit-and-run or evasive tactics is less effective, given their ability to self-heal.
Trolls can be encountered both in the wilderness, particularly in the Rift, and in the deep underground of caves and Dwarven ruins. They have even been spotted in ancient barrows. There is one unique troll encountered in the game, Udefrykte, who is encountered in the Dawnstar Sanctuary during the quest The Cure for Madness.
The locations inhabited by frost trolls are farther north and at higher elevations than those of their generic cousins (who are sometimes called "cave trolls"). Frost trolls are significantly more powerful—both offensively and defensively—and are partially resistant to frost damage. They are distinguishable by their white fur.
Armored trolls are used by the Dawnguard in battle. They have more damage resistance than regular trolls due to the armor that they wear over their bodies. If you join the Dawnguard, you can hire an armored troll for 500 gold to act as a follower in battle, although it is only able to follow simple commands such as waiting in a specific location (much like a dog). If you are level 20 or above, an armored frost troll will be provided instead of a regular armored troll.

NotesEdit
- Four Frost Trolls will always be found at Labyrinthian, regardless of your level: the entrance to the south on the flight of steps; in a tower beside the ruined Bromjunaar Sanctuary; on the battlements and stairs near Lost Valkygg; and at the mouth of a collapsed tunnel, up some stairs near the northern entrance.
- Three Frost Trolls are found at Eldersblood Peak, also regardless of level: one on the path up to the peak; one near the table on the second level; and one near the Word Wall. When Dragons appear during Dragon Rising, the two Frost Trolls on the upper level will be dead, leaving the one on the path.
- One Frost Troll will always be found on the path to High Hrothgar, in the snowy canyon portion, regardless of your level. It may be in the canyon already, or it may jump down from one of the adjacent cliffs if it spots you.
- While the use of fire damage against trolls helps against their fast health regeneration, it doesn't stop it completely. Instead, it slows it way down, and if enough time passes between attacks, their health regeneration will go back to normal, pre-fire damage.
- Lingering Damage Health poisons (either ones you've found or made) are an effective way of dealing with the health regeneration of trolls, making it an effective replacement if you don't have a good source of fire damage.
- Paralysis (either from a poison, spell or enchanting effect) is also a good counter, as trolls have a very long "getting up" animation after the paralysis has worn off.
