Alain Dufont is a Breton bandit leader residing in Raldbthar.
The previous lover of Muiri, it turns out that he was only exploiting her and her friendship with the Shatter-Shield clan in Windhelm. He robbed the Shatter-Shields while they were vulnerable and mourning for their daughter's death, and fled, leaving Muiri behind to take the blame. Desperately wanting revenge for her ruined reputation and shattered friendship, Muiri contacted the Dark Brotherhood to end Alain's deceiving ways.
He wields a frost-enchanted warhammer named Aegisbane and wears fine clothes along with a pair of fine boots.
As a target of a Dark Brotherhood assassination, Alain can be found either cooking or sitting in the main chamber of the Ruins of Raldbthar at any hour of the day; he will never be asleep during this time.

Mourning Never ComesEdit
When he notices you in the room:
- "Well. You must have all those annoying gods on your side to have made it this far, whoever you are. Even I have to admit, that's pretty impressive."
If you talk to Alain, you will be given only three dialogue options. Be aware that only one can be chosen as each ends the conversation:
Your Options | Dialogue |
---|---|
Muiri says goodbye. Forever. | "Muiri? Muiri? So, what, you're the cow's champion? Oh, now that is rich. Well then, champion, let's get this over with." |
You will die as you lived. An arrogant joke. | "A joke? Alain Dufont... a joke? I am a king on my throne, and you, my friend... you will die slowly, and painfully." |
(Remain silent) | "Ha! My opponent is so paralyzed with terror, no words will come. Let's be done with it, then!" |
NotesEdit
- Alain was originally intended to act as an opponent in the removed Windhelm arena, provided he hadn't already been killed. However, Alain just remains in Raldbthar since the arena was not implemented in the final game. There are still multiple leftovers that point to this in the final game:
- Alain doesn't sandbox in Raldbthar, he's just stationary until he gets into combat. This is due to his default sandbox package being set to only be active when he's in the Windhelm Barracks cell. A place where he can never be found under normal circumstances. The Barracks were originally the Bloodworks, the underworks of the arena.
- His class is still set to Prisoner.
- At all times, a barrel in the cell area of the Windhelm Barracks holds the Lotus Extract poison, which Muiri normally only hands to you when she sends you on your way to kill Alain during the quest.
- His taunting dialogue is internally still known as
DB03AlainPitTauntResponse
, the "Pit" portion there referring to "The Pit", the name of the arena. - His dialogue also wasn't changed from when he was a Pit opponent, in one line he calls you his "opponent", which was meant to be even more literal. The same goes for the "cow's champion" line. The line where he refers to how far you've come was also meant for a different context. Rather than your progress through the Dwarven ruin, Alain was referring to you surviving a multitude of previous arena fights.
- Originally, it seems that Nilsine Shatter-Shield didn't play a role in the quest at all, or at least not a major one. Earlier dialogue for Muiri in the Creation Kit confirms that instead of killing Nilsine, the optional quest objective was to kill Alain during a Pit match, while the normal objective was to just kill him.
- Unused NPC Huki Seven-Swords still has dialogue referring to him in his original role.
- After his death, guards may comment as you pass, "Hey! You're the one who killed Alain Dufont, up in Raldbthar. Oh yeah, word about that got around. Man was a piece of bandit trash, is what I hear."
- They might also refer to him if they see you carrying Aegisbane, saying "That hammer... Why that's Aegisbane, heirloom of Clan Shatter-Shield! Last I heard, it was stolen by a couple of swindlers. Alain and... Muiri. Yeah."
