About the "Notes" sectionEdit

About the "Notes" section: The Dark Seducer Soldiers (male) do not carry special swords, but axes: a "Worn Dark Waraxe". — Unsigned comment by 83.84.145.171 (talk) at 21:44 on 5 November 2007‎

Thank you for telling us. It is highly appreciated. =] --Playjex 16:50, 5 November 2007 (EST)
But the notes says a less used variant, and it's blade weapons, not a blunt weapon.--68.194.37.234 10:18, 2 December 2007 (EST)

Why is one priest essential?Edit

I removed this from the page, because it was...badly written.

the priest wont die. he just shocks me when i touch him. its gay, i want him die soooo bad, but he wont. he cant, but i must destroy but how do you destroy the undestroyable?

I had the same problem, though; it seems odd for there to be one random essential Priest of Order in Xeddefen, while all other priests will die. IWon'tFightUndead 01:55, 30 November 2007 (EST)

I'm not sure I understand... the instructions for deactivating obelisks and killing priests are here. Did that not work? --RpehTCE 02:30, 30 November 2007 (EST)
The thing with this one guy is that there's no obelisk to deactivate. At least, none that I found. I thought I looked everywhere in that zone, but I could be wrong. IWon'tFightUndead 02:32, 30 November 2007 (EST)
I guess I should be a little more specific. The as-of-yet immortal priest is in Xeddefen, Fane, in the room on the right, with the crystals. When I was fighting this guy and wandering around, those crystals didn't look like an obelisk to me, and I couldn't find a way to activate it, so I just moved on, instead of fighting this guy forever. Looks like I'm going to go back and test this.IWon'tFightUndead 02:36, 30 November 2007 (EST)
Okay, I just tested it, and there's no obelisk in the zone and the priest still won't die. I beat him up about six times and each time I got shocked if I tried to loot him and he always came back to life. It occurs to me that maybe this guy is supposed to be Felas Sarandas and he's essential so he can stay alive for the next time you see him. IWon'tFightUndead 02:58, 30 November 2007 (EST)
for those wondering about the crystals not being Obelisk, it's actually in the 3RD room. Xeddefen, Fane is the 2ND room. but i met this guy and i'm wondering about it to. plus this may need to be confirmed on all platforms, plus there's whether your using GoTY oblivion, or bought SI and Oblivion separately. i've experienced this on 360, with GoTY edition.98.142.49.26 02:33, 21 December 2009 (UTC) wrpen99 98.142.49.26 02:33, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
I bought Oblivion and SI separately, for PC.IWon'tFightUndead 22:57, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

() The reason why there is a priest you are unable to kill because there is a gate not far ahead that can only be opened if a knight or priest of order is close to it. If you killed all of them the gate would be impossible to open, thus making the quest impossible to complete. and as far as looting him goes, if you try to pickpocket him you'll see he doesn't have anything to be stolen. — Unsigned comment by 174.117.183.212 (talk) at 21:38 on 11 March 2010‎

How did you determine that? IWon'tFightUndead 22:08, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
I think he is confused.. The door only leads to a bridge that goes to another door, quite pointless really, and has nothing to do with the quest. Also i have experienced this "essential" priest of order, he isn't essential he must just have the script that revives him like the priests who operate the obelisks, its most likely a mistake. I'm going to see if the priest is still there AFTER i compleate the main questline and see if he dies then maybe, since all obelisks in the isles have been de-activated.. maybe this priest was linked to an obelisk by mistake?--VergilSparda 21:33, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
It looks like you might be right, VergilSparda. I see a priest in Xeddefen, Fane who's linked to a marker outside the dungeon. It looks to me like if you've reached at least Stage 5 of Retaking The Fringe, the priest becomes unkillable. He might be killable (or just outright disappear) at the end of the quest, though; I haven't checked the scripting around that. Robin HoodTalk 13:13, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
I returned to Xeddefen after the Main quest was completed.. Its structure is completely different inside, after getting about halfway through the first zone there is a wall of debris and the other zones are inaccessible, so it is impossible to reach the zone that the Priest was actually in...--VergilSparda 15:21, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Strangely enough, "he must just have the script that revives him like the priests who operate the obelisks, its most likely a mistake." answers my original question. Thanks for the replies, Vergil and RobinHood. IWon'tFightUndead 20:05, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

The Knights of 1HP. Sorry, Order.Edit

Am I correct in thinking that some of the Knights that appear in the collapsing Xeddefen are scripted to have either 1HP, or at least a very low number? It's just that many are killed the instant that rubble touches them, and those that aren't can be killed by a single punch. --Merco 10:01, 2 March 2008 (EST)

the rubble that falls on them typically deals a good chunk of damage and if that dont kill them then the woepons you use would 24.111.209.63 18:16, 20 June 2009 (EDT)
i think he's right that some have oddly low HP as some i hit before rubble was near them died on-hit-KO, normally it's 4 or 5 hits, i believe it is so they get crushed by rubble JamesDC99 15:27, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
If you're talking about the Knights found in Xeddefen Fales and Felles yes, there are precisely 5 Knights between the two zones that have 1 HP plus 6 more that are classified as "wave" (initially found in a sealed off room, then they supposedly charge at you) who also have 1HP. The others all have leveled Health, but generally not too high, since all but one or two are at least a few levels beneath you. --SerCenKing Talk 16:28, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
I've noticed the Knight's that appear as soon as the place starts collapsing usually carry a Tarnished Order Sword, which is the lowest quality of the swords they use. I think that these knights are low level, and are meant to die quickly by the rubble -- even if the player character is of a high level. 77.248.47.105 12:08, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
They're scripted to have very low health, no matter what your level is, because the whole idea of them is for you to watch as they're running towards you and the rubble collapses on both your heads, mainly theirs, so that they die. I think it's purely for aesthetic purposes to display a sense of realism in the falling rubble and the inbound danger. Arcansas 09:18, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

TipsEdit

Can some one give me some hints as of how to defeat large numbers of enemies, i cant pull off this quest or the knights of the nine quest because i just get hammered but 6 enemies being repeatedly stunned and knocked back (X360) — Unsigned comment by 118.90.81.86 (talk)

Don't let that many gang up on you. Arrows or ranged spells from distance will draw one or two away from the bunch where you can deal with them more easily. Alternatively, just have a lot of Restore Health potions ready in your inventory. –RpehTCE 06:20, 28 May 2008 (EDT)

... and if all else fails, turn your difficulty slider down a notch or two.Justeazy 02:36, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
IMO, Mace of Doom. Edit: But if you don't feel like cheating, you can raise your agility some to stop from getting stunned. A better method is to learn how to dance back and forth while fighting. Get a bit of Speed to help you move faster, then practice stepping back every time an enemy swings, then step forward to hit. With multiple enemies, you have to watch for an opening, get a good 3 hit combo in, then step back to avoid their attacks. Illusion magic helps a ton, as well. You can stun an enemy to take him out quickly, evening the odds some, or if you get backed into a corner, use a 10 second Invisibility to get in the open where you can move. Other ways you can even the odds is with some crowd control, like Demoralize, Frenzy+Invisibility, Knockback from the Expert Blade/Blunt perk, etc. --Tenraah 22:22, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

"Journal" SectionEdit

Someone needs to edit this so it includes what the game says if you choose to become the Duke or Duchess of Dementia. Not everyone chooses Mania. — Unsigned comment by 76.113.169.61 (talk) on 10 August 2008

SheldonEdit

While making your escape from the collapsing ruin, there is a gate that shuts, leaving Sheldon behind and resulting in him saying "I don't think this thing is gonna open again!" Funny enough, if you happen to trick the gate by walking until it shuts, then stepping out fast enough, you can open it again and it won't trigger shut anymore. You can then step through and listen to him whine about the gate even though it's not shut. If you are so inclined, you can even follow him as he runs out of the room, but he stops eventually and just stands still.

It is also possible to push him through the doorway and have the gate shut him on the wrong side, which is slightly amusing because he can't get to where he wants to go.

Not sure if this is worth a mention on the main article, so I thought I'd bring it up here. QuakerTroy 19:57, 3 September 2008 (EDT)

if I remember correctly isn't Sheldon set as essential throughout this entire quest, so on the main page saying its dangerous to him is actually wrong as he cant die JamesDC99 15:23, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
See here for details. --SerCenKing Talk 16:28, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

A BugEdit

After the quest was finished, I went to go back through the gates of madness (mania side), but instead of coming up to the door and given the option to open it, I simply walked right through! I was in a barren replica of the Shivering Isles, it seemed. I doesn't go all that far (well, until it gets to a drop off where there is nothing but grey, and I assume that goes on forever), but I was able to reenter the fringe. This only happened on the Mania side; the Dementia gate worked just fine. I am playing the PS3 GOTY edition. Sorry if this has already been mentioned somewhere else! — Unsigned comment by 75.5.232.138 (talk) at 09:52 on 13 March 2010‎

Where's Sheogorath?Edit

After liberating Passwall,I go to report my success to Sheogorath. But he is nowhere to be found. The little green arrow says he's supposed to be sitting in his throne or something but the only person there is Haskil(his servant).I have the PS3 GOTY addition so I can't type in any codes to fix it like on a PC.Anybody have the same problem or know how to fix it? — Unsigned comment by Daynah (talkcontribs) at 00:56 on 5 July 2010

I'm in the same boat as you and its geting really frustrating im gonna try checing outside of the isl's at the edge of the gate as a few of the characters have wound up there — Unsigned comment by 94.1.162.50 (talk) at 18:49 on 21 January 2013

A note on map markers: All SI markers swapped.Edit

This might be notable enough to add: In my PC GOTY eddition with unofficial SI patch and COBL, all map markers except the 2 cities and the throne dissapear when I enter the fringe while this quest is active. Upon exiting the Fringe, the map markers return, but I have only tried exiting it by fast traveling to the throne/cities so far. The doorway maker also dissapeared, and when I walked up to it I got the message claiming it was found, and it was re-added. The markers in the main worldspace are always present. This behavior leads me to believe the entire "set" of markers are being swapped out on entering or exiting the Fringe, rather than specifically removing the Fringe markers. It might be possible that this is an artifact of the map marker overhaul mod I am using, I have not tested this. 68.2.107.108 23:13, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

I play the Xbox 360, and the map markers disappear for me while in the fringe as well, but I don't even have the markers for New Sheoth. I'm thinking that this was probably intentional. --Tenraah 03:52, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Broken trophy helmet of Knight of OrderEdit

Okay, it seems I must show some screenshots:

1 Take a look here. Do you see the wall just behind the helmet, visible through those cavities? The same wall from other angle: 2 And now, the helmet from behind: 3 As you can see, the helmet is not opened in rear part (I needed to create picture from very close in order to make it visible). And yet, the wall behind the helmet is visible through it. Now, just to be sure, here is a fixed version of the helmet (from my mod): 4

I think it's clearly visible now. - ZuTheSkunk 06:32, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Well that's not what I saw when I went in to check... rpeh •TCE 13:32, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Shelden's tale and realityEdit

I wanted to add such note to the article, but I'm not sure is it noteworthy or correct:

*Although Shelden tells about Knights killing the citizens of Passwall and mentions screams of the killed, there is practically no one in the settlement who could possibly got killed by Knights. Relmyna Verenim, Nanette Don and Jayred Ice-Veins leaves Passwall after defeating the Gatekeeper, Shelden with Felas Sarandas flees from settlement during the initial attack, and Dredhwen can be found alive, wandering around the buildings. This leaves no one who could got killed, except Aureal/Mazken soldiers.

Any suggestions? - ZuTheSkunk 02:25, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Things like this have been noted before, and the idea has been floated that in reality, there are hundreds or thousands of citizens that are never shown, for simplicity's sake. For example, none of the cities would be built up as much as they are if they only had 50-100 people in them...they'd be small villages with huts! We're meant to assume that there are more people, more buildings, etc., that we just never see. It breaks the experience, but it does make a lot of sense when you think about it. So in this case, the citizens that were killed can be said to be the "invisible" ones. :) Robin Hoodtalk 01:47, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Getting back to CyrodiilEdit

Ok, I had been thinking for a while that I needed to get back to Cyrodiil for some spells and training, but postponed doing it. How can I get back to Cyrodiil during this quest? --IronMaiden 01:25, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

I found the answer to my own question, so I'll post it in case anyone else has the same problem: you have to find the door again. You can check the map, but keep in mind that the map marker has changed to the typical map marker for Ayleid ruins and the door itself is like a bright light on a crystal (I approached it several times without realizing I had found it). Getting back to Sheogorath's realm without finding Passwall and initiating the next part of the quest is tricky, but I did manage to jump over the rock ridge and get to the gates. --IronMaiden 02:37, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Moved note.Edit

  • You can refuse to talk with Shelden and head directly to the Obelisk. After destroying it, he will act like you've asked him to follow you.
  • If you choose to escort Shelden, he will become stuck on the other side of a gate that closes immediately after you pass through it. He will yell at you and find another way out of the ruin, eventually appearing outside Xeddefen when you have escaped.

The first one is not notable and the second is in the article. Anyone disagree ? JackTurbo95 19:14, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

The "waves" of knightsEdit

Would it be notable to mention that any of the two-or-three-strong waves of Knights that appear as you explore Xeddefen will make their way out of the ruin and into Passwall if they do not detect you? As I went into the ruins, I kept up an Invisibility spell, causing the Knights to simply run past me. When I went back to Passwall I found ten or so knights fighting there, attacking the remaining Golden Saint soldiers and, oddly enough, attacking each other as well. 69.229.38.63 21:41, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Sheldon escortEdit

I destroyed the main obelisk and started to escape i died and had to restart after destroying the obelisk i then realized i no longer had dawnfang or duskfang but it was still counting down and realized Sheldon had it but i couldn't get it back any help i play goty on 360 — Unsigned comment by Jak14323 (talkcontribs) at 04:12 on 28 June 2011

Sounds like really bad luck. While initially unarmed, Shelden will pick up the nearest weapon when threatened, so he picked up Dawnfang. It sounds like you have a save file, so I'd just kick him unconscious, then try and claim the weapon back (repeatedly clicking the "search" button when he is about to wake up). If you are separated from him, you will have to wait until arriving in Passwall. --Krusty 05:30, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Page Needing Clean Up?Edit

This page is listed as a page needing cleanup as Artifacts was. Could someone change this one as well =P Thanks! The Bry Talk! 19:33, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Actually this one isn't a transclusion problem. See Shivering:Retaking The Fringe#Deactivating the Obelisk for the clean up tag. --DKong27 Tk Ctr Em 19:49, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
I've just completed this quest. If you like, I can go through it again soon and re-write the section that needs cleaning. Arcansas 06:14, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Go for it. My problem with the current version is that it's incredibly detailed while at the same time being incredibly unhelpful. Things like "kill the Priests present, as well as any Knights that get in the way" fall into the "Well, duh!" category and "room on the left" depends on the direction you're facing. It needs to be a description of the tasks you have to perform, with detail only where the task is tricky. It also needs to use proper English - no more "can be lockpicked (Hard lock)" or "considerably dangerous". If you're still keen, good luck! rpeh •TCE 09:06, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes, well I have noticed the central difficulties in completing that part of the quest, so I can try my best to patch it up. Arcansas 15:21, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Returning to CyrodiilEdit

Okay, so I currently am attempting Shivering Isles again (for the 100th time), and I was up to the "Retaking the Fringe" quest, and of course a few waves of Knights (one or two waves) came attacking and I killed them, but then I decided to leave and go back to Cyrodiil. After spending some time in Cyrodiil, I decided to return to continue on with the quest, but when I return to Passwall, the Dark Seducers are still in attack formations, and when I try talking to them, they say "The battle is upon us. There is no time for conversation". The only Dark Seducer I can talk to is Grakendo Udico, and I can talk to her, but after that, nothing happens. No more waves of Knights of the Order come to attack and I tried seeing if I could go into Xeddefen, but the entrance is locked. Help? Helenaannevalentine 20:24, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Oh and by the way, I am playing it on the 5th Anniversary Edition for PS3 Helenaannevalentine 20:30, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

As near as I can tell, that means you haven't killed all of the knights yet. It may just be a matter of waiting for more, or maybe some of them followed you out into Cyrodiil and you'll have to wait for a stupidly long time for it to find its way back. So try that and see what happens. I can look into it more deeply if you don't have any luck with that. Robin Hoodtalk 09:03, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I'll try to wait a while to see if they respawn or reappear back in Passwall. I also heard that sometimes NPC and creatures respawn or 'fall' into a rock and they sometimes can be found as soon as you enter the Tiber Septim Hotel in the Talos Plaza District? This happened to me once, where a Heretic Watchman appeared there. Anyways, I shall report on here whether any changes to progress have occurred or not. helpEdit

This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered.

After beating retaking the fringe,I go to report my success to Sheogorath. But he is nowhere to be found. The little green arrow says he's supposed to be sitting in his throne or something but the only person there is Haskil(his servant).I have the PS3 and I can't type in any codes to fix it like on a PC.Anybody have the same problem or know how to fix it? — Unsigned comment by 24.60.220.104 (talk) on 12 April 2012

This seems to be a common problem for NPCs. The only way to fix (purely theoretical) is to exit the cell and wait 3 days. Hopefully the cell with restore and Sheogorath will be there. Grim765The Reaper 20:18, 3 July 2013 (GMT)

PS3 CrashingEdit

I'm currently at the part of the quest right where I just shut down the obelisk. I run to the exit, but for some reason, whenever I try this, the game crashes upon trying to exit back into the Realm of Sheogorath. I cannot figure out why this is happening, as I've played this before multiple times without this problem occurring on PS3.24.228.215.135 01:55, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
