Oblivion talk:Umbra (sword)

EnchantmentEdit

This comment was added to the main page:

Umbra's enchantment reads as a normal soul trap (120 secs) enchantment, but it actually has a second function. As Umbra's charge lowers, its attack power rises. The more people Umbra kills, therefore, the more power it has.

However, I can't see any evidence for this. In particular, in the construction set, the only enchantment listed is a standard soul trap enchantment, and there is no script with the sword that would make this happen. Is there any chance that the person who added this was just noticing the damage increase as their character's strength and blade skill increased (see The Complete Damage Formula)? Or else could someone provide the details supporting this statement? --Nephele 10:50, 19 December 2006 (EST)

I just checked this out, again, because the comment had been added back in, this time reading:
While Umbra's enchantment reads as a normal 120 second soul trap enchantment, it actually has a second function. Umbra, fully charged, has an attack rating of 28. However, as the charge lowers, Umbra becomes stronger. With a charge of zero, Umbra's attack rating shoots up to a whopping 33, making it more powerful than Goldbrand.
This time I used Umbra in-game, and twice drained Umbra of charge completely and there was absolutely no change in the attack damage done by Umbra (my Blade skill started out at 51 and got up to 53 by the time I was done; strength=100 the whole time; health at 125%; the damage was 21 the whole time). All weapons in the game can have attack damages that are larger than their quoted baseline damage. For strength=100 and skill=100, the weapon will do 6.25% more damage than the baseline damage. Furthermore, if the weapon is repaired to 125%, it will also do more damage. So I'm pretty sure that all that is going on here is that the player's skill and strength are increasing, and the weapon at some point got repaired past 100% health. --Nephele 23:09, 22 December 2006 (EST)

Nephele, I'm playing the PS3 Version of the game (which I'm assuming is identical to the unpached game+No9 mod). The sword damage registers at 18, 100% health, with a blade skill of 67. I've obtained the sword at levels 19 and 20. I've emptied the sword of soul charge, and returned to Clav. to keep it and finish the quest. The damage stays the same on all occasions.

The base damage will only hit 33 when the weapons health is at 125; this can only be done by an expert of the armorer skill.

I have three ideas:

  • Umbra is leveled
  • 28 base damage is part of an Oblivion patch
  • The PS3 version of the game has a modified base damage for Umbra

What do you think? Anyone please chime in to discuss. ---FromHereOn 22:05, 2 September 2007 (EDT)

The damage you will do with any weapon in game depends upon your character's skill and strength. See Oblivion:Weapons#Damage Calculations or The Complete Damage Formula. 18 damage for Umbra is completely consistent with a blade skill of 67 and a strength of about 65. Until your blade skill is 100 and your strength is 100 (or until you can repair the weapon past 100% health), you will never be able to do the 28 base damage quoted for the weapon. No new theories are needed to explain what you're seeing while playing the game. --NepheleTalk 17:10, 2 September 2007 (EDT)
That makes perfect sense. I had an inverse idea of what the base damage represented. Thanks.---FromHereOn 22:05, 2 September 2007 (EDT)
Is it possible to raise Umbras base damage with either a 'fortify blade' or 'fortify strength' enchantment? I have 100 blade and strength and it states that the base damage for Umbra is 33, although I thought the extra 5 was from enchantments.124.169.114.152 13:47, 25 January 2008 (EST)

This is old, but... In my game, the extra 5 attack (from 28 to 33, with 100 strength and 100 blade), came from repairing the weapon's health from 100% to 125%.

I kept Umbra, and I always have Black Soul gems. I recently noticed on my third time through the game that if I am carrying more than one Black Soul gem and an empty Grand Soul gem, Umbra will capture the souls of NPC without an empty Black Soul gem in my inventory. I had three and increased to eleven Grand soul Black soul gems going through a necromancers cave. Is this a glitch?, or a special function of Umbra I never noticed. I have not been anle to find anything online supporting this. --

Two Handed?Edit

A minor point here: My Umbra sword is two-handed. I am playing with OOO, though, which could account for the difference. — Unsigned comment by Skyfire (talkcontribs)

Yep, it's probably a change made by OOO. OOO is, after all, an "overhaul" of the game and therefore intentionally made to be different across the board from vanilla Oblivion, which is what is documented on this wiki. In vanilla Oblivion, Umbra is one-handed. --NepheleTalk 13:29, 12 July 2007 (EDT)
I can confirm that this is a change made by OOO (as well as a number of other mods). --Gaebrial 05:17, 20 August 2007 (EDT)

Keeping UmbraEdit

(Discussion moved from UESPWiki:Reference Desk)

Is there a way to keep Umbra and get and get the Masque of Clavicus Vile? I made a new file so I could try to duplicate Umbra and get two of them so could give one Clavicus Vile and keep one. I didn't give up an artifact to Martin I just duplicated Azura's Star so I could have all of the artifacts. But I need to get both of the artifacts from the Clavicus Vile quest. — Unsigned comment by Cloud strife (talkcontribs)

You can try duplicating Umbra using the scroll glitch if the arrow one isn't working. Hand one of those in at the shrine and see what happens. —RpehTCE 15:27, 18 December 2007 (EST)
But it's a quest item. You can't drop it.— Unsigned comment by Cloud strife (talkcontribs)
Then I suppose you can't duplicate it.
You do realize that the game is designed to force you to make a choice here about which artifact you would rather have? You are not supposed to be able to simultaneously collect every item that exists in the game. And the duplication glitch is just that: a glitch. You are not supposed to be able to create copies of every item in the game. If you really want the freedom to completely ignore every rule that exists in the game, then you'd be better off playing on the PC where you can completely rewrite the entire game if that's what suits you. But on the Xbox 360, it's not possible. --NepheleTalk 17:52, 31 December 2007 (EST)

It seem pretty much impossible to do without commands. I have tried time and time again to dupe the sword in anyway possible, by cloning myself VIA Skull of corruption to keeping the sword until the SI quest where you fight your self. I have failed no matter what way I tried to dupe it. 77BeTa77 12:22, 7 March 2008 (EST)

It says pretty clearly on the Skull of Corruption page that a corrupt clone will not get a copy of Umbra. Similarly, the SI doppelganger has a (somewhat long) set of quest-related items that will never be copied onto the doppelganger, one of which is Umbra. So it's no surprise that you haven't been able to get a copy of Umbra either of these ways. --NepheleTalk 12:41, 7 March 2008 (EST)

It was worth a shot anyway I guess. 77BeTa77 17:09, 7 March 2008 (EST)

Hey I've been wanting to keep them both lately too, but I can't find anything online. BUT you know about those testing cells that people on the PC can get to with console commands? Umbra might be in there. And if not, moybe the mask of clavicus vile will. And for those with an Xbox 360 like me, there might be other places like the Frostcrag Spire Glitch that are accessable. And I've read that the testing cells may be connected. I saw this on a talk on this site. POINT BEING... if anyone can figure out a way to keep both of these objects, than that wold really rule. And same with the testing cell stuf. — Unsigned comment by 75.75.10.6 (talk) at 05:39 on 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Use the Console and IDs to add it to your inventory. –Elliot talk 05:39, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Would getting a chameleon suit use SoC of umbra (person) than taking umbra (sword) from the "clone" turning in that umbra, than going back and getting the original umbra work? from what i gather, umbra is only removed from your clones. Mikeyboy52 09:58, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

I attained Umbra and all the armour (but no shield?) long before beginning the quest. When I repaired the items to 125 quality, some of them, including the sword, were duplicated. I've had this happen with the Hircine Vest as well.

Unfortunately, when I try to hand in a sword to Clavicus, the game crashes after it is removed. If I choose to keep both, they both gain weight and the game crashes around 10 seconds later. So not the best dupe glitch Folken Zero 20:53, 1 February 2010 (UTC) EDIT: I found a workaround for my situation. Damaging one of the Umbras so they could no longer be stacked allowed me to hand it in crash free. Of course now I have no Umbras, but I'll stick to my Rockshatter.... i belive the answers you seak are in morrowind :D ... its either in a book i read or some lore that the person who was holding it gives to you before you take umbra. im right to say that technically anyone who comes into possesion of the Umbra... is called Umbra themselves? and its more of a curse than a blessing?--Phillmorton82 08:37, 22 November 2008 (EST)

this book gives a good description on the origin of Umbra

MaterialEdit

I´ve been asking myself, of wich material Umbra was forged. Especially, because its Basic damage is 2 points higher that a daedric shortsword(Lvl25 Str72 Lck53). After playing for a while i got an Idea, maybe its made of Adamantinum!? An evidence for this may be the dark colour and just how nice it looks (no dents like daedric weapons, straight design). ("Umbra" is also the name for a famous dark brown colour, made of dirt found on cyprus) --Falk5T 17:51, 18 August 2008 (EDT)

I'm pretty sure it is ebonyCrowbar 18:40, 21 August 2008 (EDT)

-- Umm, No, you'll find that (almost) every dadreic item is made of ebony (infused wit hthe soul of a dadrea), I would gues that Umbra is the same but infused with the soul of a man. who's pain, like that of the dadra adds to the damage of the weapon (lore wise0. NB: in morrowind it was the only ebony claymore.

--update *disclaimer* use of the word "Daedra" from here on in will be assumed to represent the malicious demon-like creatures who prey on the destruction and suffering of others. Not all Daedra are so evil.

Incorrect, Daedric Artifacts (the ones possessing the blood of a Daedric Prince and not the mundane weapons wielded by Dremora) forged from strange otherworldly metals.

According to the citizens of Pell's Gate and the accompanying lore article on the artifact, Umbra was a "dark being, like a man but with eyes like holes into nothing." Umbra is therefore NOT human, and it's most likely that the ancient witch Naenra Waerr either created this dark being (similar to Relmyna Verenim's gatekeeper of the Fringe) or summoned him from some dark abyss beyond the realms of Nirn, perhaps even Oblivion itself.

Upon creating this creature, Naenra bound him to a sword, MOST LIKELY a plain old Ebony Longsword of Vvardenfell origin to account for its high aesthetic value(Cyrodiilic Ebony is depicted with lots of gold adornment, whereas Morrowind's ebony weapons are smooth and sleek). Umbra's imprisonment in the sword gave it strength surpassing even Daedric quality weapons.

To account for the increase in strength with a decrease in charge, it's important to not that Daedra do not gain strength by pain alone, especially since the only characteristic qualifying it as a Daedric Artifact is its connection to Clavicus Vile. Umbra is not a Daedra, he was never human, and has hungered for souls since birth. Therefore, Umbra, a possessed Ebony Longsword from Vvardenfell gains strength by capturing souls, represented in the game by a drop in charge, since the only way to drop the charge of a weapon is to hit something with it, thus satisfying Umbra's thirst for blood and sacrifice and increasing his strength.

I cannot forgive the assumption that most daedric artifacts are not made of ebony. Only a small handful could be considered resembling Ebony. Goldbrand for example.

I would even go so far as to say that Goldbrand cannot be simply dismissed as "forged" out of gold because gold, while maintaining it's beauty over time, is extraordinarily malleable and would make a terrible blade. My theories on the Daedric Artifacts that are made out of some sort of metal are as follows:

Goldbrand: Heavily enchanted GILDED Daedric quality weapon

Mace of Molag Bal: Dwemer (note how similar the handle motif is to Volendrung, already known to be of Dwemer origin)

Volendrung: Definitely Dwemer.

Ebony Blade: ...Give me a break.

Spellbreaker: Also appears to be Dwemer. Not a weapon, but made of some kind of metal. More consistent in appearance with the other in-game dwarven weapons. The Mace of Molag Bal and Volendrung are both Dwemer but to account for the difference from the mundane Dwemer weapons, perhaps they are just older than the others, as Volendrung was, "of profound historical importance to the Dwemer" (First edition pocket guide to the Empire, Yagrum Bagarn)

Skull of Corruption: Daedric for sure, perhaps not of Mehrunes Dagon's realm like the other in-game weapons but perhaps borne of Vaermina's own nightmarish realm.

The Wabbajack, Sanguine Rose, Azura's Star, Rings of Khajiiti and Namira, the Skeleton Key, the Saviour's Hide do not merit investigation of materials used in my opinion, but it is safe to say that a majority of Daedric artifacts are of Dwemer Craftmanship, assuming the daedric prince didn't just will it into existence, as is likely with the rings, azura's star and both staves.

LeveledEdit

it must be leveled i picked this up at level 1 and at 100% health it deals 11 damage, still a pretty awesome sword none the less. — Unsigned comment by 118.90.32.200 (talk) on 30 January 2009

No, it's not leveled; you probably just don't understand how damage works for every weapon in the game. Try reading some of the articles on the site, such as The Complete Damage Formula or the introduction on Weapons. --NepheleTalk 00:00, 31 January 2009 (EST)
I don't get it either, on the article it says it has 28 damage, but i got it at level 6, and in the game, underneath the little sword icon in the journal, it says only 5. What's the deal here? — Unsigned comment by 58.178.138.184 (talk) on 7 March 2009

Just to clarify (this is my last question, sorry to bug you), say I reach 100 in blade and strength and I'm level 30 or something, will the sword be as strong as if I would've taken it at this level? Or another way to put it, if I got the sword at level 30 with 100 blade and strength, would it be the same strength as it would be if I got the sword at level 6 and then leveled up to 30? Disappeared in ContainerEdit

I placed my Umbra sword into the drawers in the Arch Mage's bedroom in the Arcane University along with some other items, thinking that the container wouldn't respawn (since it is my room). Is there any way to get the items back? (Xbox 360) Sign of the Thief 11:20, 13 April 2009 (EDT)

I'm asuming you used the drawers at the foot of the bed (that container does lose items). However the Archmage's Night Stand is a safe container so be sure to use that to store items in future. I'm afraid though, that on the 360 there is no way to get lost items back other than by reloading old save game files.--Willyhead/t 11:25, 13 April 2009 (EDT)

Actually I wouldn't advise using the Nightstand as it has scripts attatched to it and has been known to reset. --Manic 19:11, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

World of Warcraft Reference?Edit

Umbra sword resembles the runeblade Frostmourne, and it does the same enchant as it would normally do, steal a soul. Arthas & Frostmourne, not just the sword but Umbra's owner seems to wear a black colored armor (Ebony), lives in a dark place, and uses a cursed blade. From other info, the blade was created by a mortal, Frostmourne was created by a mortal. I do not think that this is a co-insidence, Warcraft 3 was before Morrowind and Oblivion. Frostmourne --Redwarrior005 09:51, 20 May 2009 (EDT)

Umbra appeared in Morrowind. Morrowind was released May 5th, 2002. WoW was released November 23, 2004. So which is the copy? –RpehTCE 10:54, 20 May 2009 (EDT)
It's a lot closer call than that actually, as Frostmourne appears in Warcraft 3, released on the 3rd of July 2002. Umbra obviously existed before Frostmourne, but I doubt that Frostmourne was a copy of Umbra either. I'm pretty sure there are loads of stories out there about cursed blades stealing souls. - Aces Andre 11:10, 20 May 2009 (EDT)
Indeed. There's possibly a case for both being copies of, or at least inspired by, Stormbringer. --Gaebrial 02:47, 21 May 2009 (EDT)
I am shure there is tons of stories of mortal made blades, ownde by a person living in a dark and scary place and steals souls. Its not a copy, its just unoriginal. — Unsigned comment by 148.83.132.188 (talk) on 28 May 2009
Seriously? This is a point of interest? Well, anyway, I doubt anyone saw umbra in may of 2002, thought of Frostmourne, and created a whole videogame JUST to make the sword in ONE MONTH. I have to agree with the above comment. Nothing interesting here: Just a sword and a cliche. 24.233.128.66 23:07, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Umbra (cant find her)Edit

What happened was... I was trying to get the Umbra sword without doing the clavicus vile daedric shrine quest. I was only level 4 at the time, but my friend managed to kill her at lvl.1 so i thought i'd be able to do it. I was wrong, she ended up kicking my ass. I didn't know what to do so i ran away. I had to run all the way back to the imperial city waterfront district whilst being chased by Umbra and some random imperial legion soldier who Umbra ended up killing. About a week later(not in game time) i went back to try again and when i got to the usual place where she is, she wasnt there! So i dont know what to do... If anybody has any advice e-mail me at mike_a7x@hotmail.co.uk I'd really like to know wtf happened. Please help! — Unsigned comment by 90.201.170.171 (talk) on 19 June 2009

Perhaps she died in the wilderness? She was weakened after all. If that's the case she might have disappeared as her a body isn't a permanent corpse. You could also try waiting at Vindasel. My guess is she will return there after a while. You could also start the Clavicus Vile quest by using a glitch (explained on the quest page), and get a marker for her position (I think you get a marker for her position. If you get one for Vindasel you are probably screwed.) I hope it helps you. Wolok gro-Barok 10:03, 20 June 2009 (EDT)

Thanks i managed to find her by going back to Vindasel and she was there. So i killed her and stole her stuff :) Thanks for the help.

Non-Quest Umbra ID?Edit

"00026B22" refers to the Quest version of Umbra, is there a separate ID for the full weight Umbra? — Unsigned comment by 72.25.118.250 (talk) on 29 July 2009

There is only one version - it loses its quest status during the quest. You need to use the setquestobject Console command - setquestobject 26b22 0 to add the weight. –rpehTCE 19:31, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Damage Note?Edit

When reading the section on goldbrand, it mentions umbra is the most powerful single-handed weapon in the game in terms of base damage. Yet the article on Umbra itself doesn't mention this. Wouldn't that be something worth noting in the article? Also worth noting is that although the weight of the Umbra sword is normally 45 points, until you complete the the quest for Clavicus Vile, it's considered a quest item, therefore weighing nothing.

well the part about he most damage would be good on the page but the part about the weight would not be good on the page--GUM!!! 14:40, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
Actually, yes both should be up and I believe the 0 weight part already is.--Corevette789 14:45, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

resememblance noteEdit

Should the recently added not be on the article? I dont think we say things like AoA resembles a blades cuirass. Than again AoA is unique and is an enchanted blades cuirass, Umbra is Quest/Leveled and isnt an exact replica of shadowrend. I also want to point out that both additions to shadowrend and umbra were both recently done by the same IP: 201.153.195.207 Does anyone think this should be kept? Effects on sanity?Edit

Is it worth mentioning on the page that it tends to eventually consume the mind of it's current wielder? At least lore/flavor-wise. The player character is assumed not to hang on to it long enough for this trend to happen to them.--99.169.82.110 06:09, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Maybe on Lore:Umbra, but not the game page, since as you point out it doesn't happen in-game. rpeh •TCE 06:37, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Truly the strongest?Edit

It says on the page that Umbra is the strongest single handed sword in terms of base damage but looking at the damage listed and then looking at the Unique items page under the one handed blades I can see some that have the exact same damage stat. So...Wouldn't that mean Umbra is one of the strongest instead?--Raleka 01:04, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Never mind. Just noticed I was looking at the wrong column. Thats what happens when you get very little sleep XD--Raleka 01:06, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Connection with Fighters Guild?Edit

I've noticed one thing... the mesh of the Umbra Sword is called "fgd05_umbrasword.nif". "FGD05" is the ID name of the quest "Azani Blackheart", what clearly suggests that the Umbra Sword was initially intended to be a part of this quest, possibly a weapon used by Azani himself. Do you think it's something noteworthy? - ZuTheSkunk 13:58, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Bump. - ZuTheSkunk 19:26, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
While it is true that is the sword's model, there is nothing in-game or elsewhere that would imply it. It is possible that Blackheart was intended to have a sword with the Umbra Model. It does not mean that Umbra was supposed to be involved. Logical Fallacy in that the reverse does not need to be true to a logical statement. --DKong27 Talk Cont 20:14, 20 April 2011 (UTC)
I wouldnt have ben surprised at all if Azani ended up being the one to have Umbra. Lets face it, for an NPC with a player + 25 level, his sword was kinda lame.

Strongest?Edit

Umbra has the highest base damage of any one-handed weapon in the game. I do not think this is true, i summoned something and killed it with umbra, it took 2 hits, then i killed it in 1 hit with that sword you get from the skeleton in battlehorn. — Unsigned comment by 68.231.197.3 (talk) on 4 July 2011

Umbra has a base damage of 28. The Dragonsword of Lainlyn has a base damage of 23 at its highest level. rpeh •TCE 14:33, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Not An Artifact?Edit

This is one thing i must bring up, the apearence of this sword isn't trully unique, this sword actually has the appearence of the two-handed sword version of Shadowrend in the SI expansion, causing it to not complete all of the requierments to be an "artifact" yet it is still considered an artifact on the achievments page in your journal, it is trully a unique item and unique weapon, but it isn't an artifact per say. ~~Sash the Unseen 24/09/2011~~ — Unsigned comment by 201.144.51.43 (talk) at 21:51 on September 24, 2011

ImageEdit

A new image for the sword was recently uploaded, although it was reverted in favour of the original. The new one is of higher quality, and I think it looks better without a distracting background. What are others' opinions on this? --Legoless 19:58, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

I agree, the angle of the new picture is also clearer. I'd say use it! --Kvaener 20:08, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
I believe the new image is of a better quality, but maybe it doesn't some form of background? Can't it be re-taken with the background by Wayman? --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 20:33, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
A background could easily be applied, but the sword's outline might look odd. --Legoless 21:12, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
The older one looks better, IMO, because it looks like it came from the game. The new one looks like it came from a rendering program. elliot (talk) 08:51, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Disappearance of the Sword itselfEdit

The other day I discovered an old fort (Vindasel) I decided to go inside, and went to the end of it. I saw a character by the name of Umbra. I punched her in the head, and she started running after me, so I booked it! I got into the room that gives a toxic gas, and she started dying. I am an Argonian so it has no effect on me. Soooooo I stayed in the room, and eventually she died. The Umbra sword just vanished! It pissed me off.... I took her armor, but I still really wanted the most powerfull sword in the game ;) Lemme know if this is supposed to happen, or if I need to do a quest in order to get the sword. Btw, her corpses disappeared too...

Efficient EnchantmentEdit

I checked the generic magic weapons section on generic magical weapons with soul trap and this appears to use less energy. As shown at http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Generic_Magic_Weapons#Soul_Trap Soul Trapping for 7 seconds on one of these weapons takes more charge than Umbra's Soul Trapping for 120 seconds, making the enchantment extremely efficient.

I know in the spell section it shows that some spells cost more or less than they would if they were custom made (thus making the cheaper ones notably more valuable than regular spells) and to my knowledge there isn't anything on the site that tells about enchantments in the same way. Can I just assume that leveled/unique weapons will be more efficient, or is it only a select few items? Bushwhacker 06:49, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

can you steal umbraEdit

i used the 'cntr' key to sneak in to the room but couldn't steal it from the bosmer. she just kinda told me to get lost because umbra is hungry for souls. she let me steal some gold from her, but that was about all i'm guessing you can't steal this one — Unsigned comment by Hamoo (talkcontribs) at 23:09 on 9 December 2017

There are unconfirmed reports that it is possible, with either the paralyse exploit, or with a zero-weight reverse-pickpocket (attack with a damage weapon effect until the sword breaks, charm her unhostile, give a zero-weight weapon, leave and come back or attack and charm to make her draw the weapon, then pickpocket Umbra). These are not confirmed but are suggested as working in a few places. If it works please let us know and it might be added to the page. Leveled?Edit

Picked up Umbra at level 1 and it’s listed in my inventory as 10 damage, not 28. Is it in fact leveled? Or am I missing something?

Sword damage depends on your strength attribute and blade skill level. 28 is simply the damage when you reach the peak, armorer experts can further boost the damage to 33 by repairing the sword up to 125% of it's health.
