Andel Indarys was the Count of Cheydinhal during the late Third Era.[1] Indarys was originally a House Hlaalu trader in Morrowind, but at some point after 3E 380, he immigrated to Cheydinhal in Cyrodiil to search for greater opportunity.[1][2] He eventually gained his footing in the city and became the count of Cheydinhal.[1] It was believed that Indarys' sudden rise from a virtually unknown Hlaalu trader to the count of Cheydinhal was because Barenziah and his friend Hlaalu Helseth used their considerable influence to put him on the throne.[3] His rise into the highest ranks of Cyrodilic nobility was not well received by most of the old families of Cyrodiil and some other Imperials, who regarded him as a presumptuous upstart.[1][2][4] By 3E 433, he was the only non-Imperial count in Cyrodiil.
Around 3E 413, he married Llathasa, and they had one son, Farwil.[5][6] Circa 3E 433, Llathasa was discovered badly battered and dead at the foot of the stairs of Castle Cheydinhal's county hall, immediately attracting scandal.[1] The Count's rumored struggles with debauchery, intemperance, and infidelity led some to speculate that he killed Llathasa or was involved.[1][3] After Llathasa's entombment in the undercroft of the Great Chapel of Arkay, Andel commissioned a bust of the Countess, which he put near her tomb.[6]
It was said that Indarys knew of the existence of the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary in Cheydinhal, but bribes and threats of death kept him quiet.[7][8] He was seemingly unaware of (or unconcerned with) the heavy fines that the captain of the Cheydinhal city guard, Ulrich Leland, imposed on the citizens of the city.[9][10]
During the Oblivion Crisis in 3E 433, he was a staunch supporter of High Chancellor Ocato, as he believed that no one was better suited to guide the Empire through the difficult times.[5] When an Oblivion Gate opened outside the western gates of Cheydinhal, Farwil and his chivalrous order, known as the Knights of the Thorn, entered and launched an assault.[11][12][13] However, after two days with no contact with Farwil and the knights, the Count feared the worst, so he posted guards outside of the gate and offered a reward for the recovery of his son or confirmed news of his demise.[11] The Hero of Kvatch eventually rescued Farwil from Oblivion and closed the gate, and Andel rewarded them with an heirloom of the Indarys family.[5][13][14] Additionally, with the Oblivion Gate outside of Cheydinhal closed, he provided military aid for the defense of Bruma.[15]
Circa 4E 48, the Knights of the Thorn were led by Andel's descendant, Ilver Indarys.[16]:205
