Quick WalkthroughEdit
- Speak to Thromil Rufus in the Dustmoth Legion Garrison, Firewatch, about the Champion.
- Travel to Pahunsabi and speak to Darnell.
- Either:
- Kill Darnell and return to Thromil for 5,000 gold.
- Enter Pahunsabi with Darnell and find an incriminating letter.
- Give the letter to Darnell, and meet him the Dustmoth Legion Garrison for either 1,000 gold or the Ebony Mirror-Blade.
- Refuse to give the letter to Darnell, and report to Thromil once he is dead for 3,000 gold.
- (Optional) If you did not give the letter to Darnell, give it to Senillos Tulnus in the Ember Keep Great Hall to see Vycius Pitio jailed.
Detailed WalkthroughEdit
Thromil Rufus has one final set of orders - one for which he promises you 5,000 gold. Orders to kill the Champion, Darnell, at the cavern of Pahunsabi. As he puts it:
"Interesting fellow, isn't he? Quite prolific. Experienced, competent... and deeply disloyal. Hates me, and my way of doing things. And if I let him fester, he'll be a threat to me and the garrison. But you're strong, too. Perhaps even as strong as him. So I've got a task for you. Darnell's headed up to Pahunsabi to clear out the smugglers at that cave. We've been working with them for a while, so he figures he'll get some dirt on me from them. We're not going to allow that to happen, though. Go to Pahunsabi and kill Darnell. When you're done, I'll have a promotion and 5000 gold for you. Get to it."
Prepare well, and journey to Pahunsabi. It's on the coast to the north of the stronghold of Koranyon, which Thromil will have marked on your map. Darnell stands at the entrance. As you approach, he will call out and request your purpose here.
You can tell him straightaway that you're here to kill him, but it's a tough fight - succeed, and Thromil will reward you with 5,000 gold and 20 Reputation with the Imperial Legion when you report in. You'll be able to kill Darnell later, but as this will likely be after the two of you have killed the smugglers of Pahunsabi, Thromil will dock your reward to 3,000 gold and you will receive a reduced +15 Reputation with the Legion.
You can also inform Darnell that you have been sent to help him, or even that you've been sent to kill him but don't mean to do so. In either case, he will accompany you into Pahunsabi. Kill the smugglers here. You specifically need to find and kill Uelyna Thenim, who carries an incriminating letter that appears to be from Vycius Pitio, the man who gave you your initial orders in Firewatch.
On reading the letter, Darnell will ask what it's about. There are two ways this conversation can go - either you give him the letter, or refuse, in which case he pulls something of a betrayal:
"If that's how it's got to be, then I'll take it off your corpse. I'm sorry, but I'll do whatever I need to do to save Firewatch."
He'll attack, and you'll need to kill him. Report back to Thromil Rufus if this occurs for +15 Imperial Legion reputation and 3,000 gold. Thromil rather thoughtlessly will not take the incriminating evidence from you, and so you can also hand it straight over to Senillos Tulnus in the Ember Keep Great Hall, and get Vycius Pitio arrested.
If however you agree to give Darnell the letter when he asks for it, he'll ask you to meet him at Vycius' old station, in the Dustmoth Legion Garrison. Go there and speak to him. He'll note that Vycius now resides within the dungeons, and that he has taken over the man's old position - Thromil is naturally livid.
Darnell's reward varies depending on how consistently you took his side during the questline. If you only sided with him some of time, or persistently completed Vycius Pitio's orders to the letter, you will receive 1,000 gold and +2 general Reputation. If you consistently conducted your orders as to how Darnell suggested (specifically during Naval Negotiations, Taxing the Poor and A Sweet Deal), you will receive the +2 general reputation and an enchanted blade, the Ebony Mirror-Blade, which applies a Reflects 50% effect to you for 3 seconds after every strike made with it.
