Quick WalkthroughEdit
Detailed WalkthroughEdit
In your travels across Solstheim you may come across a madman shouting things related to some mysterious books. He has a chance to spawn at several specific spots all over the island of Solstheim as part of a world interaction. After a short conversation your map will be updated with the location of a Black Book and the madman will attack you. After defeating the madman you will need to travel to the location on your map to retrieve the Black Book.
Possible locations you can be sent to include: Benkongerike, Kolbjorn Barrow, Raven Rock Mine,[verification needed — see talk page] Tel Mithryn Tower, and White Ridge Barrow.
If the madman dies before he finishes the conversation, this quest will not be added unless you read the note on his body.
NotesEdit
- The madman will not approach you if you have already collected all of the Black Books.
- If the book you are sent to collect is the one in Tel Mithryn, you will not be able to access it until you've done a number of quests for Neloth, so this quest may remain open for a while.
BugsEdit
- Reading the madman's note can cause a glitched journal entry sending you to retrieve a book you have already found, for example to Tel Mithryn.
- The Unofficial Dragonborn Patch, version 1.0.4, fixes this bug.
- After completing or leaving Filament and Filigree or The Sallow Regent you may hear a hissing sound. ?
- Reentering the book should remove the sound
- Even if you have collected all of the Black Books, this quest may activate, as the two main quest books are not properly excluded from the list.
- The Unofficial Dragonborn Patch, version 2.0.3, fixes this bug.
Quest StagesEdit

Objective 1: Find the Black Book in <Alias=Dungeon>

- The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 0, 10, 20, 100, 200, 255.
Notes
- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,
<Alias=LocationHold>
) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering

, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest usingresetquest DLC2WE06
