Mistveil Keep (also called Mistveil Estate and Old Mistveil Manor) is a large stone mansion traditionally located on the southern side Riften. It has served as the castle of the city's Jarl.
In 2E 582, Mistveil Estate was put up for sale following the death of old Thane Snelgar.[1] It was not the residence of the Jarl but was instead a separate mansion found outside the city.[2]
When Hosgunn Crossed-Daggers became Jarl in 4E 98, he took 7 years to build a massive castle which became a visual reminder of the people's oppression which earned it the nickname "Hosgunn's Folly." In 4E 129 the people of Riften overwhelmed the guard and burned down the castle with Hosgunn still in it.[3] By 4E 201, Mistviel Keep had become the Jarl's residence and seat of power, and was now within the walls of Riften.[4]
