Quick WalkthroughEdit
- Encounter the aspiring wizard.
- Help him perfect his spell technique.
Detailed WalkthroughEdit
When entering any of the major cities, you may come across a wizard who claims to want to join the College of Winterhold. He will then ask that you teach him a few spells, usually ward spells:
- "I've finally found you! I want to join the College of Winterhold. But I need help with my wards. Can you teach me?"
- Sure, I can teach you.
- "Really? Great! Okay. So, first, you raise your ward and I'll throw a little spell at it. That way I can see the 'right' way to do things."
He will cast his spell and then ask you to cast yours:
- "Get your ward ready."
- "Great! Now I'm going to cast some spells at you. Keep your ward up so I can study it."
As he casts a spell against your ward, usually Flames:
- "I think I see what I was doing wrong... All right. That should do it. I think I'm ready to try the College again. Thanks!"
He will then reward you with a small number of scrolls.
NotesEdit
- If you have a follower, tell them to wait a short distance away. If you don't, they will attack the wizard when he attacks you.
BugsEdit
- Loading through doors (into your house for example) will result in the Student disappearing from the city when you go back outside. A quest marker will be present, but is not visible on the map, leaving no way to finish or remove the quest from the log.
Quest StagesEdit

- The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 0, 110, 200, 255.
Notes
- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,
<Alias=LocationHold>
) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage WIChangeLocation04 stage
, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest usingresetquest WIChangeLocation04
.
