Ghorbash the Iron Hand with his axe

Ghorbash the Iron Hand is an Orc ranger and the brother of Chief Burguk. Due to his adventurous nature, he served the Legion for years but has now returned to his family in the Orc Stronghold Dushnikh Yal. He still longs for traveling and, as a result, can be convinced to become your follower. Befriending him will make him a potential candidate for marriage.

Like the other residents of the stronghold, Ghorbash sleeps in Burguk's Longhouse every night between midnight and 7am. He then heads outside, pulls out his axe and hacks away on the training dummy for twelve solid hours. At 7pm he goes back inside and enjoys a five-hour meal with the other Orcs.

He wears a set of steel armor, excluding the helmet, and wields a steel war axe. He carries the key to the longhouse, a piece of food and selection of common items and gold.

Related QuestsEdit

When you approach him he may comment:

"We honor the bravest fighters, but I have seen many types of bravery in my travels."
"I am an Orc and a warrior, but I have no desire to become chief."
"I used to wander the corners of Skyrim like you. I miss those days."

When spoken to:

What do you do for the stronghold?
"Me? I'm Burguk's brother. I came back after serving many years in the Legion. By then, Burguk had already become chief, and he welcomed me home as family, not a rival as is tradition."
You served in the Legion?
"I did. I was known as Ghorbash gro-Dushnikh in those days, in honor of my homeland. Many Orcs leave the stronghold to join the Legion. They welcome our skill in battle and smithing, and we welcome a chance to see the world."
You miss traveling?
"I do. There is a freedom the roads give you that the stronghold does not. But I have a place here, and I wouldn't want to dishonor my clan by leaving again like some young pup."
Why don't you travel with me?
"I couldn't. It would dishonor the place the chief has made for me."

You must pass an easy Speech check to persuade or bribe him, or you can challenge him to a brawl.

Option Dialogue Reaction
You just told me you missed adventure.
Passed: You're right. Look at me, talking in circles like some old wise woman. Very well, outlander. You have my axe when you need it.
Failed: Yes, but I am honor-bound to stay here.
Passed: Ghorbash available as a follower
Failed: Nothing
Some coin, to soothe your guilt?
Passed: Well, for that much, I don't think Malacath would turn his scowl on me. All right, outlander. My axe is yours.
Failed: My honor isn't so cheap, outlander.
Passed: Ghorbash available as a follower
Failed: Nothing
Too frightened to leave home?
I don't have to take that from you! Passed: Ghorbash available as a follower
Failed: Nothing
Fine. Forget I asked. As you wish. Nothing

If you win the brawl:

"Your fists speak louder than your words."
You'll come with me, then?
"My axe is yours, outlander. Just say the word."

Unused DialogueEdit

Originally, instead of becoming a follower through dialogue, Ghorbash would've given you a quest. The dialogue for his quest (internally known as Favor208) is not present in the Creation Kit, but can still be found in the game's DialogueViews files.

I'll listen. What's this request?
"Years ago, thieves made off with my clan's ancestral battle-axe. Every night, I sleep fearing that Mauloch will curse me for losing it. My duty to the stronghold keeps me here, but if you were to find my axe, I would gladly pledge to come with you and fight at your side."
I have your ancestral axe.
"I knew when I looked at you that Mauloch had set you to help me. Thank you, outlander. Me and my axe are ready to fight when you need us."

  • Ghorbash is in the Ranger class even though his default equipment is governed by the Heavy Armor skill.
  • Ghorbash's Ancestral Axe is the only remnant of the quest that can still be found in the files through the Creation Kit. It's actually still placed in-game, in Burguk's longhouse, but in a permanently disabled state.

Oglub: "You could challenge Burguk, my brother. Yours is the stronger swordarm."
Ghorbash: "Serving in the Legion taught me to respect leadership. The stronghold needs Burguk."
Ghorbash: "It is a fine day to work the mines."
Oglub: "This metal will serve the forge well, my brother."
