As an alternative to participating, you can inform a guard of the quest after you've been offered the quest. You will then be told to report it to Thane Gorvrda, who will require proof. You can acquire this proof by searching Grandr's house for an incriminating letter, and return for a reward of 200 Septims.
The following Quest_ID and Index codes can be used with the Journal Console command to manually update the quest to a certain point.

Barjorg, one of the Bears of Karthgad, approached me with an idea to make some money together. He wants me to ask Gradnr [sic] - one of the Karthgad villagers - to go hunting with us, luring him out to the forest, where we'd kill him and share his belongings.

I agreed to Barjorg's proposal. He told me to go and lure Grandr when I'm ready - he will be waiting for us by the northern gate, from where we shall proceed into the wilderness.

Grandr needed no persuading to accompany me on the 'hunting trip'. In fact, he seemed rather enthusiastic about it, if only a little nervous.

We met Barjorg at the Karthgad gate. He will lead us to a remote part of the forest, so we can secretly murder Grandr.

When we reached a remote place, Barjorg and Grandr attacked me together! Clearly it was all a trick to lure and kill me instead of Grandr.

I killed Barjorg and Grandr in self-defense. They should have been more sensible in choosing their victims. So ends the life of two Karthgad manhunters.

I declined Barjorg's offer, having decided I don't want to be involved in this shady business between these two. Perhaps the local authorities should hear about it too.

Guards advised me to bring the case of Barjorg directly to Thane Gorvrda. As a thane, she's responsible for jurisdiction in the village on behalf of King Barda.

Gorvrda heard me out. Knowing Barjorg's reputation she believed my tale, but she said she needs a stronger proof for Barjorg's guilt, especially since he is a Bear Clan member.

In Grandr's house I found a letter sent to him by Barjorg. As it turns out, it's all a fraud - both of them were in agreement, and I was supposed to be their victim!

The letter was enough of a proof for Thane Gorvrda. She said she will arrange to have these two brought before the court. For my honesty I was rewarded with 200 Septims.

Grandr attacked me when I found the note. I had no choice but to kill him.

Barjorg approached me after I killed Grandr. He admitted these two were partners in crime, and I was supposed to be their victim. He attacked me then, leaving me no choice but to kill him as well. And so ends the life of two Karthgad manhunters.
