Detailed WalkthroughEdit
Following a road shortly outside of Riften you may encounter Yngvar, a frightened Nord pact soldier. Upon speaking to him you will learn that his comrades, including Captain Viveka, have been captured by Worm Cultists in and around Lost Prospect. Yngvar may be pressed for more information through an intimidation check, which reveals that a Cultist took the key to the cages to the central tent in the camp on the hill.
- "Listen to me, please! They've all been taken—Adelsar, Hara-Na, Varryn, even Captain Viveka. I can't go back there!"
- Calm down. Who took them?
- "Worm Cultists! Captain Viveka led our patrol against their camp but they ambushed us. We tried to fight our way out. I'm the only one who escaped. The others are either dead or captive."
- Where are they?
- "Down in the valley behind me. The leader seemed to be this tall woman in robes; they called her "Gullwig," or something like that. I'm … I'm not going back there. But you look like you could take her."
- I'll try to help your friends.
- "My friends are in cages in the Worm Cult camp. Will you rescue them? One of the cultists must have the key!"
- What've the cultists been doing? / What else have the cultists been doing?
- "What haven't they been doing? Kidnapping, murder, necromancy—you name it, they've done it. Captain Viveka hoped to stop them, but we failed."
- [Intimidate] Yngvar, you're a soldier. Act like one. Tell me something useful! / Yngvar, you're a soldier! Act like one. What else can you tell me?
- "I'm sorry. The things that they're doing to my friends ….
Wait. I remember something. I saw a cultist taking keys into the camp's central tent. That's where you'll find the cage key!" - Thanks. I'll look for it.
- "I don't know what else to do. I signed up to fight bandits, not necromancers and undead!"
- "I'm sorry. The things that they're doing to my friends ….
Fight through the cultists, retrieve the key, and free the soldiers. You'll need to free Adelsar, Hara-Na and Varryn Hloran.
Once you've done so, enter the mines to search for Captain Viveka. Inside you will see multiple Lost Souls who will tell you that the leader of the Cultists, a woman named Gullveig, is using a shard of Wuuthrad to steal the souls of peasants around the area.
Exit the mine after freeing two bound peasants and you will find Captain Viveka and Gullveig, the latter of which is performing a ritual to remove Viveka's soul. Gullveig will summon many zombies in an attempt to stop you interrupting her ritual, however after defeating the zombies Gullveig herself comes to deal with you, revealing herself as a lich. Kill the lich and free Viveka, who will then rush into the sanctum below. She will say she needs to gather her troops and asks you to recover the shard of Wuuthrad.
- "Gullveig would have sacrificed me as well, if not for your help."
- What now?
- "Gullveig was insane. Tearing out people's souls with the shard, using that dark energy to transform into a lich. Disgusting. She got what she deserved.
I must gather my surviving troops. Grab the shard and meet me outside."
Doing so will cause the spirit of Ysgramor to appear and congratulate you.
- "I see a hero standing before me. You have risen high in my estimation today."
- What should I do with the shard, Ysgramor?
- "Even a shard of the mighty Wuuthrad is a potent artifact. My ancient axe still has power left. Use it, hero!"
- Against Sinmur?
- "Aye! Sinmur and Thallik lurk at Trolhetta. I can feel them, like rotted teeth that must be pulled. Use the shard's power to end them!"
- I will!
Leave the sanctum and speak to Viveka again to complete the mission.
- "Once again, you've pulled my arse out of the fire. I owe you a round, maybe two, next time you're in Riften."†
"Gullveig. What can I say? She was nuts. All those cultists are. I wanna kill every one of them, in the most painful ways possible. Sounds like a plan, right?"‡ - Why was the shard so vital to Gullveig?
- "The shard enabled Gullveig to devour souls and ascend into lich form. I'll keep the shard safe from now on.
You saved our lives and prevented evil from spreading out of Lost Prospect. I hope to return the favor someday."
