Detailed WalkthroughEdit
Just outside of Ivarstead, you'll find a Bosmer woman named Nilwen inside a small shack attempting (and failing) to act like a damsel in distress. She says that a "terrifying beast" named Lockjaw is nearby, and you'll be a hero if you kill it.
- "Y'ffre's bones! A brave adventurer! Please, won't you help me?"
- What are you doing in this shack?
- "Shack? This is my home! It's not much, but it keeps the weather off my head. My home is the least of my problems!"
- What problems?
- "Beasts! Death is all around me. The worst of them is Lockjaw, a monster without equal!
He lairs in a fallen tree to the south. If only someone dared kill him for me!" - I'll take care of Lockjaw for you.
Travel to the Geirmund's Hall Wayshrine and head south to fight the "terrifying" Skeever. Once that's done, return to Nilwen. She'll say your work isn't done, and more beasts still threaten the area. Next, Nilwen sends you after Greatclaw. Follow her instructions to find this "beast's" location.
- "You've returned! And all in one piece. What a hero!"
- You sent me to kill a rat.
- "Wasn't he terrifying though? Such big teeth and such sharp claws! I shudder to think of what he might have done to a helpless Bosmer like me. He's really dead?"
- Yes, he's dead.
- "I prayed nightly for a champion to deliver me from these beasts. And now you're here, my savior!"
- Anyone could kill a rat.
- "Are all heroes so modest? But danger still lurks. A deadly beast called Greatclaw lives nearby. Last night I saw it kill a man by dropping a tree on him!"
- I'll deal with Greatclaw.
You have the option of telling her you're done with this, to which she attempts to fake distress. You can still continue the quest after this.(?)
- No, I'm done with this.
- "Oh, mercy! I'm just a Bosmer, what chance do I have against such fierce beasts? I can only pray my death is swift and not too painful."
You'll find your "target", a vulture picking at a dead body north of the Ragged Hills Dolmen. "Greatclaw" will then fly away, denying you your kill. If you examine the nearby corpse, you'll notice the poor man's valuables are missing. Regardless, return to Nilwen. She'll continue her faux praise and send you on your next task.
- "Tell me, brave adventurer! Is Greatclaw truly dead?"
- Greatclaw was a bird.
- "Well, but it was a great big bird, wasn't it? Huge! With a cruel beak and massive claws?"
- No, just a normal bird. It flew away.
- "The foul beast fled, knowing you'd slay it, my champion! I fear him no longer. What would I do without you?
I beg you to help me one last time!" - What is it?
- "Cracktooth! A terrifying Goblin. I could never defeat him, small and helpless as I am. But I know a brave, powerful champion like you can slay him easily!
His camp is to the east, across the river." - Yeah, yeah. I'll go kill the little guy for you.
Your final target is a goblin named Cracktooth. Head northeast of the Ragged Hills Dolmen to find not Cracktooth the goblin, but Cracktooth the giant. Kill the beast and return to Nilwen. She will express legitimate surprise that you completed the task. Attempting to keep up the façade, she'll claim that both goblins and giants are equally terrifying to her, and she'll give you your reward.
- "Oh, dear! Did my champion lose his nerve? Please, you must stop Cracktooth!"
- Cracktooth is dead.
- "He's … wait, what? You found an actual Goblin?"
- No, I found a giant. I killed him.
- "Well, you know. Goblins, giants—they're all great big beasts to little me.
But what's important is you saved me. My hero! Thank you so very much. Here, have some coins."
Alternatively, you can report her to Constable Gerrunn at any time after slaying Lockjaw. He will comment that he knows about her and her reputation, and explains that she tricks people into "slaying" great beasts for her. She then eventually sends them into a trap with a giant, who typically kills the victim. She then loots the corpse of its belongings, presumably for profit. He mentions that she has probably fled the area by now and the quest is completed.
- There's a Bosmer squatting in a shack outside town.
- "Oh, her. Little Bosmer lass with a sob story about great beasts and how helpless she is?"
- That's the one.
- "She lures people in, tricks them into fighting nearby giants. The giants kill them, she takes their valuables. Then on to the next sucker."
- Should I go after her?
- "She's long gone by now. No fool, that one. Moves on once locals are wise to her."
- I smelled a rat, but maybe not soon enough.
- "Ha! That'd do it for most around here. Polish their egos to a fine sheen.
Relatives of one of Nilwen's victims went looking for her a few months ago, three big Nord men. They turned up in the river, slit from ear to ear."

- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
