This is a complex quest involving several factions, with several ways to start it. All the factions (the Bosmer Rangers, the Raiders (led by Hlofor the Arctic Bear), the Sylvan Rangers (led by Eregor), the Putrid Hand (led by Master Lien Valeth), necromancers (led by Fayth Noor), the Mages Guild, and the daedric prince Molag Bal) are after an artifact referred to as "Graithlan's vessel", which is actually a set of armor infused with his soul (the Dread Armor mentioned above). Whosoever wears the armor gains great power.
The easiest way to start the quest is to read one of the notices posted in Anvil. There are also reports and journals scattered in various locations (see below), or you can gain a journal entry by trying to don some of the sylvan rangers' armor.
From here, the easiest way to explain the quest is to deal with each faction individually:
The sylvan rangers and Bosmer Rangers are fighting in the Gold Coast area. The Bosmer occupy several camps (all of which have reports), while the sylvan rangers have taken over a handful of Ayleid ruins and are searching them for clues to the armor's whereabouts. Eregor has stolen the Heart of the Wild Woods, an artifact sacred to the Bosmer for reasons that are unclear (perhaps he plans to give it to Molag Bal?). If you try to don some of the sylvan rangers' armor, you'll receive a vision sent by Jephre, the Bosmer god, which prompts you to go to Narind and recover the gem (it's on a pedestal on the second level, guarded by Eregor's lieutenant Lareil). Once you do so, you'll receive another vision sending you to Yeleri, where Eregor himself is holed up. Killing him will grant you Jephre's favor and add you to the creature faction - meaning, most animals will no longer attack you. Additionally, he wears most of the Dread Armor (minus the helmet, which is currently elsewhere).
In the Nibenay Valley, east of Bravil, many forts have been taken over by Raiders led by Hlofor. He's based out of Dasek Moor, and has sent his children Faran and Sheil Hestarius to Fort Flecia and Fort Facian, respectively, to look for the Dread Helmet. Again, there are reports at all three locations; kill all three of them, and you'll take care of the raider faction. The helmet, by the way, is located in Fort Facian.
The Putrid Hand can be found in several ruins (see their entry), but the only one of interest is Wendelbek, where Lien Valeth is based. His journal has, among all the ramblings, information on the other factions and the armor.
Fayth Noor (who, despite the name, is male) has taken up residence in Underpall Cave along with a small contingent of necromancers.
Hannibal Traven doesn't really appear in this quest, but he does have a journal in his chambers, on the table beside his bed.
Once you have the full set of armor, toddle off to the frozen north, to a remote ruin named Varastal. The door there will only open if you're wearing all the pieces, so be sure to do so. Head inside, and you'll be confronted by the Reaver of Ghuul Icxth, guardian of the Icxth sword that goes along with the armor. With that in your possession, the armor will reach its full potential and proceed to take over your soul - ahem, provide you with many more hours of fun gameplay.

I've read an official warning posted in Anvil about the sightings of newly-arrived bands of Bosmer Rangers. As I have ascertained, the authorities do not yet know the reason behind this event but they correctly saw it fit to warn their citizens about potential danger in the vicinity of the town. What I read in Narind about Eregor and his former ranger brethren shows that their fight is fierce and bound to spill into Anvil itself. Still, I may find more information from observing the rangers and inspecting their bases.

Perhaps I should continue inspecting Gold Coast encampments and Ayleid ruins. or
I've found the Anvil Fighters Guild report that warned about the sightings of newly-arrived bands of Bosmer rangers. Apparently, there seems to be two different groups. According to Rhano, they appear engaged in some kind of struggle. He feared the militarized group while the other reacted friendly towards him. Perhaps I should try to ascertain what each group's objectives are. I should be careful though, lest I fall on their wrong side before I can befriend them. or
I've read a report in the Anvil Fighters Guild that warned about the sightings of newly-arrived bands of Bosmer rangers. Rhano has correctly identified two different groups, as well as their opposition. Yet he is not aware of the reason behind this strife. I have already inspected ranger encampments and discovered information regarding Dread Artifacts and the Valenwood Rangers' mission to stop Eregor's search. The plot surrounding the Gold Coast is much more serious than Rhano suspected. or
I've read an Anvil official's warning about the sightings of newly-arrived bands of Bosmer Rangers. My own investigations lead me to believe that the authorities do not yet know the nature of the threat to the whole Gold Coast. Still, they correctly saw it fit to warn their citizens about potential danger in the vicinity of the town. Aiding the Bosmer Rangers in fighting against Eregor and his armies of corrupted ranger brethren could solve their struggle and end the threat to the people of the Gold Coast. or

I've found Azzan's report to Countess Millona Umbranox about recent Bosmer rangers' incursions. Azzan seems concerned enough to suggest the Countess to order the posting of warnings around Anvil. Rhano is correct about one of these two groups. Eregor's rangers attacked me on sight. They captured The Storyteller's sacred gem and are searching for "vessels of Graithlan's soul." Anvil, and presumably the other ranger faction, would find peace were I to storm Yeleri and end Eregor and Molag Bal's plans. or

I've found a note from Countess Umbranox's to Dairihill, Anvil Castle's Steward. She is concerned about the report of a Fighters Guild Member called Azzan, which details information about recent and unusual Bosmer ranger sightings in the Gold Coast. It may be worthy to find this report and read its contents--the Countess felt alarmed enough to order the posting of warning signs to Anvil's citizens. or

In a Bosmer Ranger encampment I have found a note detailing the orders given to these groups of rangers. The command comes directly from a Sacred Circle of Druids. They want to stop someone called "Eregor" and his forces from finding artifacts of undead power, related to the name of "Graithlan", as I confirmed through Lien Valeth's notes on this same matter. The rangers are to set up encampments in the Gold Coast and prepare the ground for following reinforcements in their struggle against Eregor.

I have found a Bosmer Ranger encampment on the western hills of Kvatch. There, I read a message written by the rangers for their fellow brethren. It is a very detailed explanation on what is the source of the struggle between these ranger factions. As I also confirmed, Eregor was searching for spectral artifacts inside Ayleid ruins of the Gold Coast, and even beyond. The rangers suggest that all search be confined to the rim of the Gold Coast, but I have already found Eregor and defeated him in Yeleri.

I tried to don the armor from a fallen ranger, but it slipped off me as if it were alive. A vision then overcame me. Voices mocked me and grew angry as I saw the interior of an Ayleid ruin. A green gem rested upon a pedestal. It seems that this gem is of great value to their master, The Storyteller. I have already found the offender: Lareil, a servant of Eregor, stole the gem from a Druidic Circle in Valenwood. However, I did not find the Heart of the Wild Woods in Narind. I should return to the Ayleid ruin and find the gem.

I have entered Narind, where Eregor's forces and one of his lieutenants keep the treasure of the Green Fire Cove, the Singer's Heart. I should expect fierce resistance if I attempt to leave this place with the artifact in my possession. I wonder if my skills are up to the task. It may be wise to wait until the Bosmer rangers from the Strid River camp carry out one of their raids on this dungeon. Or I can prove my true worth by recovering the gem alone. As the ranger wrote in her report, their god may return the favor.

I have found a message from Eregor to Lareil, one of his top lieutenants. Surprisingly, the reason for the theft of the Heart of the Wild Woods was a mere strategic move in service of Eregor's grander designs. He has pledged allegiance to Molag Bal for a promise of power. With the Daedra's aid, he is searching the land for "vessels of Graithlan's soul." The same Dread Artifacts mentioned by Bosmer Rangers and Raiders. Eregor names "Yeleri" in the message. Perhaps the name of his command post?

I have found a message from a certain Eregor to Lareil, apparently one of his favored servants, that details a plot against a group of former fellow rangers from Valenwood. It seems that Eregor wanted the "Heart of the Wild Woods" as a guarantee against attacks, so that he can continue his search for something called the "vessels of Graithlan's soul." Whatever that means is now beyond my understanding. It is clear that, as it involves Molag Bal, it rests on a dark and powerful pact. I should investigate more. or

I have snatched the Heart of the Wild Woods from the clutches of Eregor's followers, and even Lareil's personal vigilance. A vision again overtook me when I touched the gem. I saw pristine wilderness like I have never seen before. In it, a wolf smiled at me and I perceived this being's joy in having its sacred stone so close to its release from captivity. I felt imbued by pure energy, a clear gift of this being rewarding my deed. Eregor won't be able to count on this "assurance" against his powerful enemies any more.

As I left Narind with the prized Heart of the Wild Woods, the gem burst out of my grasp and transformed into a ghostly spirit. It quickly ran away, heading west-northwest. I have entered the Ayleid ruins of Yeleri. This is where I may find Eregor, and finally put an end to his dark designs. This feat is unlike anything I've accomplished before. I am alone against an army of battle-hardened rangers that bristle with fanaticism in their loyalty to Eregor. Despite the odds, I count on Jephre's blessing. A glimmer of hope holds the Gold Coast in the balance. In me falls the responsibility to end the struggle.

After an epic battle, Eregor's body rests lifeless upon the cold ground. I have defeated his armies, his personal guard and him, the master of the corrupted rangers. Molag Bal was a personal witness to the demise of his puppet. I felt his presence radiating in the air during the last moments of Eregor's life. Jephre is victorious, and I, as his champion, have received a gift of nature. I can now summon Jephre's creatures to my aid. The wild beasts will now respect me as a favorite of Jephre.

I found a note on Eregor's corpse. One of his lieutenants, Jan'val, reports about his search for Graithlan's armor. Jan'val also mentions other new players that are involved in the search--raiders, whose master might hide in a fortress south of Kvatch, and Fayth Noor, a necromancer rumored to have the power to connect with the spectral plane.

I have put on a piece of Eregor's armor, a dark green metallic armor, just as the one I recovered in Fort Facian. There is something from beyond this world about this Dread Armor. I feel as if I had stepped into a void, yet my body still hangs in the air without falling; it is like being present and at the same time completely distant from the surrounding material reality. The pieces of the armor seem to react together, as if attracted to each other. I wonder what will happen once the set is equipped and made whole.

I have found Hlofor's battle plans in Dasek Moor. A very cunning man, this Arctic Bear. He was aware of a search for the Dread Artifacts and sought to step into this affair, no doubt wanting to protect his legacy as commander of the Raiders. I can corroborate that his information was correct. I found the item that he was seeking--a green metallic helmet of tangible but dark power. I can assume it is one of Graithlan's vessels mentioned by Hlofor.

While inspecting Fort Flecia, I ran into Faran Hestarius. After a difficult fight, I defeated him. He was heir to the Hestarius noble house and next in line for the command of the Raiders. The Arctic Bear, had sent him on a mission to find the burial place of Graithlan's eldest, where one of Graithlan's secrets may lie. His message also mentions Faran's sister, Sheil, who is to inspect both Fort Entius and Fort Facian. I have already bested Sheil Hestarius. But I did not retrieve Graithlan's relic from Fort Facian. I should return there to get it.

I have found a mysterious helmet in Fort Facian. I can feel its dark power bristling, reaching beyond common enchantments and into the realms of the unknown. It appears to belong to the same set of armor that Eregor wore when I defeated him. What I read in Bosmer Ranger reports lead me to think that this helmet may be part of the Dread Artifacts. I see clearly why Eregor sought them with such tenacity, and why Molag Bal would be interested in having the armor used for nefarious purposes.

When I put on the last piece of the Dread Armor, a dark and powerful energy ran through my body. The sensation I felt wearing the incomplete set pales in comparison to what I now experience. The world splits in two, the immaterial and the material appear divided and whole at once. I feel as if gliding through the air, but my feet are firmly planted on the ground. Somehow, joining the armor makes me part of the netherworld. I am now a creature of both worlds. The spectral realm is in my reach.

I have discovered Lien Valeth's lair. I've read his "legacy," a book that speaks of his designs to achieve otherwordly power through "Graithlan's vessels." He knew of the efforts by other powerful players in acquiring the same power: Eregor--whom I defeated in Yeleri; the Bear -- which refers to the Raiders' Commander; Traven--Master of the Mages Guild; and Molag Bal. Even so, Valeth was certain of his ultimate victory. Despite all this, he failed. The complete Dread Armor, Graithlan's soul, is already mine.

I have read Hannibal Traven's writings on the recent necromancy ban, the exile of its practicioners and the creation of the Putrid Hand under Master Lien Valeth. Traven uncovers the truth behind his motives in banning necromancy--he is satisfied with the jolt that his move has created through the guild's ranks and through the necromancers' way of life. Still, he feared Valeth. He searched for the vessels of Graithlan's soul. Traven indicates that these form an armor with the power to connect with the realm of death.

Finishes quest
In Varastal, I have fought the Reaver of Ghuul Icxth. This powerful spectral warrior used a unique blade, bristling with power from the netherworld. I can wield it safely while wearing my Dread Armor--Graithlan's wraith grants me the power to connect with the spectral realm and thus use such mighty artifacts. Perhaps, now that I am the owner of Graithlan's vessels and Icxth's sword, I have finally attained the dark power that so many coveted. Yet, I am sure that this power will not come without its price, eventually.
Notes
Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage OOOSylvanRangerQuest stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
