"Sinking" on weapon racksEdit

When I place my staff of magnus on any weapon rack it slides down the rack every time I leave then re-enter the cell. It has become such a problem that I can no longer access the staff as it has "sunk" so far in the ground that it is physically now impossible to get back. I play on Xbox 360, I was just wondering if anybody else had encountered this bug as it is has become a pretty serious inconvenience to me. --VergilSparda 21:44, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

I'm aware of many problems similar to this one involving weapons on weapon racks moving around. Maybe one of the "workarounds" explained here could help. So, if your problem can be confirmed, we'll either mention it on this page, at Skyrim:Houses, or at Skyrim:Staves (depending on the specifics). Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 00:05, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed, same happens to me,KingK 17:02, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

2 Staffs of Magnus?Edit

This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered.

When I defeated Morokei, I found his remains had 2 Staffs of Magnus, appearing as "Staff of Magnus (2)". I am unsure why this happened although I suspect it may have had something to do with sneaking at the time? This was on Xbox 360. — Unsigned comment by 78.86.97.195 (talk) on 14 April 2012

I just received 2 as well, but I wasn't sneaking. Also on 360...— Unsigned comment by DownloadableContent (talkcontribs) at 18:26 on 1 June 2012
- The same has just happened to me, I came back to Labyrinthian because I forgot about the Word Wall from Slow Time and found another Staff of Magnus on Morokei's remains, I'm on PC. 187.113.131.254 22:34, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
--Same thing happened to me, i had brother veralus, as an essential follower(didnt want to go through a dungeon for serana or beat the db) either its because i let brother veralus fight him while i stood back, or i wen there a while before wehn i thought i found a secret entrance(exit) — Unsigned comment by Thalmoragent (talkcontribs) at 17:56 on 23 April 2013
---This has happened to me every time I've fought Morokei. The staff in his hand falls after he dies, becoming an item, and you can loot his inventory to get the second. I'm fairly sure that it has to do with whether or not you disentigrate him to ashes rather than leaving him as a corpse. Mindtrait0r (talk) 02:38, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

Transforming on Weapon PlaqueEdit

When the Staff of Magus was placed on a weapon rack it transformed into a glass sword. I tried the vertical rack, the weapon plaque and the shield rack, all three transformed it. Placing the sword back on the rack didn't change it back. It happened in Hjerim, Breezehome and Proudspire Manor. I have never seen this happen with any other weapon so I have no idea if its a corrupt save, unknown bug or what. This happened on the PC version. — Unsigned comment by 98.230.212.131 (talk) at 04:26 on 26 May 2012

EffectsEdit

shouldn't somebody point out that it doesn't really absorb anything, only damages magicka or health? the players magicka or health will not be restored when using the staff. also, it doesn't seem to switch from damaging magicka to damaging health unless you hit the opponent with a new beam while they have 0 magicka, which is difficult because it is always regenerating. it would appear the staff is ok for draining mages' power but not much good at killing anything except animals.

I have also noticed this bug, and I think it may be related to a problem mentioned in the Unofficial Skyrim Patch logs, Staffs suspend magicka regeneration.
"Holding down the fire button with a staff will suspend the player’s magicka regeneration until the button is released. This might be by design, but it seems inconsistent with the fact that the staff doesn’t actually use player magicka at all. Tested with Wabbajack, Staff of Magnus, and Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson. My guess is that it is triggering the spellcasting code that halts regeneration while the player is holding a charged spell (which is also annoying, but probably by design)."
Your magicka will never increase while you are using the constant effect of the Staff of Magnus, thus the absorb magicka effect is negated. Gardimuer 19:57, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
I thought it just absorbed the magicka back into the staff, I just got it on another character im currently playing, If I can remember next time I am on, I will test it out, along with the only absorbing health if you hit them with a new beam.
After poking around the Creation Kit, I found the magic effects used by the Staff of Magnus, "MG07StaffEffect" and "MG07StaffEffect02", have the Effect Archetype set to "Value Modifier" instead of "Absorb". Meaning there is no attempt being made to absorb magicka or health.--Saith89 (talk) 02:26, 18 March 2013 (GMT)
I just played through the College of Winterhold questline and after acquiring the staff I was surprised to find that it does now absorb magicka (this is not my first play through and I was aware that it did not absorb magicka before). Can someone else test in their game if the staff works for them as well (i did not test to see if it absorbed health or to see if the target is out of magicka that it will transition into absorbing health) Anonymous June 9, 2013, — Unsigned comment by 75.121.142.80 (talk)

For some players, the staff will not absorb health even after all the target's magicka has been depleted. The staff will instead absorb a seemingly endless amount of magicka instead of health.

Staff RespawnsEdit

I am fully aware that there is an unknown glitch where the you can get two staffs. I have found out that after 30 days (After completing the staff of Magnus quest) without entering labarynthian the staff reappears in Morokei ash pile. IT IS ONLY IN HIS ASH PILE, but I can confirm that I have been out of Labarynthian for well over 30 days and the staff has respawned each time in the ash pile. I am on PS3 and have always wanted two staffs hence the reason I have been monitoring this glitch for a while. KingK 17:08, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

EDIT I will add however, that the staff didn't initially respawn after 30 days. I had completed the college quest line very early on in the game and didn't revisit Labarynthian untill I had completed all the other quest lines. So about 120-150 days later.KingK 17:30, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

  • It can be re-obtained by means of looting Morokei's remains after beginning Aftershock.
The bug was reworded to say it only gets added when the quest starts, but as the location is quest locked it would be impossible to discover a second when not using the PC console. I'm adding it back but unreworded. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 12:30, 27 April 2014 (GMT)
Aftershock is a different quest that can be repeated. And Labyrinthian remains unlocked after the first trip through it. Also, I tested it on Xbox 360 so I didn't use the console.70.209.64.190 13:06, 27 April 2014 (GMT)

Morrowind: is it similar, or different?Edit

On the morrowind page for the Staff of Magnus it is says "This staff also appeared in Arena and Daggerfall with similar enchantments. In Skyrim it appeared with different effects." http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Staff_of_Magnus_(artifact)

On the skyrim page (this page) for the Staff of Magnus it says "This staff also appears in Morrowind with a similar effect."

this seems backwards to me - shouldn't they agree with each other? (imo the effects are similar enough that i would just say they were similar)

Staff of Magnus more drain damageEdit

Recently I have been researching the staff of magnus to help improve it's damage output. It counts as an Alteration staff, but uses destruction magic (Drain Magicka/Health). So would a fortify destruction potion increase it's power? I have tested it but I cannot verify this is true sofar because I cant read the level of damage output after the potion being used. Xbox 360 platform Legendary edition...
Beg to differ on your claim that it is an alteration staff...
I was trying to determine the staff type of "Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson" since I have various enchantments on rings, necklaces, etc, to reduce to 0 the magicka drain on the staff of Magnus. No luck yet for Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson, however, but the staff of Magnus is definitely a restoration staff that does not drain its charge when used with enchanted items that make restoration spells cost zero magicka. 198.91.176.251 18:57, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
The enchantment on the staff is called the "Staff of Magnus Effect" which applies two different magic effects, both called "Staff of Magnus Effect". The first one is the drain on magic and it is tagged as an Alteration school effect. The second one is the drain health effect, and it was tagged as an Alteration effect, but a patch changed it to a Restoration effect (unless I'm reading it wrong and it was Rest but is now Alt, current patches being played would help). Just to complicate matters, the staff itself is tagged as Destruction. So it may be that both of you are right, just not at the same time. Doesn't absorb Magick or Health (moved from page)Edit

"When the Staff of Magnus is casted at a creature or person, the staff won't absorb magicka or health. This is fixed after completing the quest Eye of Magnus."

If it's "fixed" during a later quest this suggests that it is an intended effect. Any thoughts? Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 17:17, 12 May 2013 (GMT)

XB360 platform Legendary edition... How do you gain access to the staff of Magnus when Labyrinthian is quest locked until master wizard Mirabelle Ervine gives you the Torc of Labyrinthian to open its gates / door? I tried and pick pocketed that Torc earlier on when it appears on her, but when used on the door at Labyrinthian, the door will not open if it was stolen ahead of time before Mirabelle Ervine is made to realize the Torc's significance and properly triggers the quest. 198.91.176.251 19:10, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
You can't. The statement which I removed from the page would apply anytime after obtaining the Staff of Magnus during its same named quest and completing the next quest. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:20, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
