GlitchEdit

The workaround: "Another possible workaround is to exit through the door used to enter." is completely incorrect as that was what I did the first time around, and Derkeethus still glitched. The cause of this glitch is currently unknown. It's possible; whoever put this workaround up may have been lucky and not have him glitch and assumed that it was because he exited the way he had come. I'm putting this here so whoever added that workaround will know why it was removed. --Ijiero 11:55, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

No glitch happened to me too. I sneaked in, killed all enemies, found the switch and talked to him. I walked back to the entrance and waited on every corner for him because he had problems to follow me. Before I went out I saved and made sure he was behind me. Well, after leaving he was with me and the quest was done with no problems at all. Without him, I turned back to explore that cave further. Quozar 16:33, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Glitch happened to me too. He stayed in the dungeon. I followed these steps and he is now ok: "Go outside the cave and use the console and type 'prid 0001B08D' and 'moveto player' and then talk to him, this will finish the quest." — Unsigned comment by 74.77.120.137 (talk) at 22:08 on 4 December 2011
Derkeethus glitched on me in several ways. I'd already killed everything in there before I found him, and had made a save just then fortunately. When I got to the exit, he wasn't with me, so I went back and he was still in his cell. So I reloaded the save and this time watched him carefully, and he walked (very slowly) behind me. I had to keep stopping and waiting every few steps because if I moved out of range of him, he'd simply stop following me. I got him all the way to the exit this way, and saved again. When I exited he didn't follow me. So I reloaded and tried several things. What worked for me (although I may just have been lucky) was this: I entered the console and clicked on him, and then typed <disable> and <enable>, then I went behind him and walked forward, 'bumping' him along in front of me until he was trapped between me and the exit. I had noted that ordinary NPCs sometimes exit with you (from a shop or inn or so on) if right beside you when you exit. So I took advantage of this, and when he was trapped between my character and the door, I exited. He came with me. Note, however, that this did not work when I tried it without using disable/enable. In any case, the quest updated correctly, I had the option to take him as a follower, and he went off to Darkwater Crossing. Daeris (talk) 11:22, 2 January 2013 (GMT)
I completely agree with Ijiero. Just wasted a whole load of time on that "possible workaround". — Unsigned comment by 80.229.165.251 (talk) at 23:15 on 4 December 2013‎
This workaround was added back in 2011, removed, and added back by a different editor (or at least different IP address). As part of "assume good faith", it should probably be left in the article rather than assume that it was added erroneously. Not every bug workaround will work for everybody, and this bug seems to be particularly troublesome for players without access to the console, so we shouldn't remove any workaround that may work for some people without a good, well-documented non-console fix. --Xyzzy Talk 05:53, 5 December 2013 (GMT)

Miscellaneous comments from DerkeethusEdit

If you're playing as an Argonian with a high sneak score, Derkeethus will comment that you remind him of the old Shadowscales. 24.156.216.144 12:40, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

I play a Dunmer and got that comment too while I was sneaking in with 100 in sneak skill of course. Quozar 16:33, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
High-elf, lv 60 sneak; Same. — Unsigned comment by 188.48.32.87 (talk) at 14:42 on 5 December 2011
This may be a generic comment from all male argonian NPCs as I heard it from Deekus at Hela's Folly shipwreck (playing as khajiit). 71.163.235.35 20:36, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I had the same comment but my sneak was 48.I was rescuing him and i sneaked and he said "You remind me of the shadowscales."And I was like LOL.I was playing as a Khajiit by the way. — Unsigned comment by Natsu (talkcontribs) at 09:32 on 14 June 2012

placeatme vs. movetoEdit

I don't know how it is in Skyrim, but in Oblivion the "placeatme" command left an entry in the save file and would cause the savefiles to be bloated if used too often. Placeatme also creates a new copy of the base object rather than move the reference already in the game. I would therefor recommend the use of the moveto fix rather than the placeatme fix. — Unsigned comment by 83.233.145.40 (talk) at 04:57 on 29 November 2011

That is what I was thinking. PlaceAtMe was same thing in Morrowind. I used it a lot just to spawn creatures in town. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.1.69 (talk) at 01:56 on 30 January 2012
I agree. The moveto workaround is way cleaner than the placeatme workaround. There is no need for a second Derkeethus, this just offers another chance for the game to glitch. I removed the placeatme workaround. --93.207.183.51 01:10, 16 March 2013 (GMT)

Can't sacrifice the scaly bastardEdit

After I lead him out of his cave I left him in Darkwater crossing because I don't need an NPC punking my kills. Figured he would be a good candidate for Boethiah's proving, so I hunted him down and lead him to his (attempted) doom. He won't touch the pillar for any reason though. Is he essential for some reason? — Unsigned comment by 74.83.48.222 (talk) at 16:24 on 6 December 2011

Yes, as far as I have noticed, he is tagged as essential. - — Unsigned comment by 68.37.159.173 (talk) at 05:49 on 9 December 2011
You do know he is the only Follower that is essential? This makes him the best follower you can have; specially after his Blades Training and when you give him Daedric (He takes down Frost dragons on his own) Sacrifice Azura's Follower if you want someone to sacrifice. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.1.69 (talk) at 01:48 on 30 January 2012
Not the only one. Mjoll the Lioness is essential as well. --174.6.51.17 01:52, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
I want to sacrifice him too, anyone tested with setessential 0. Does it work? Do you think it can cause other problems? LukeH 09:01, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
After looking over the issue in CK I can answer my own question: He's not essential itself but he's stuck tied to an alias for his quest and the alias is made essential. The issue is the quest is not stopped and he remains in the alias forever. This makes setessential not to work. Editing the quest either by properly finishing it or remove the essential flag from the alias makes him able to be killed or sacrificed(tested this). Is this a bug or intended so? I believe a bug by not properly finishing the quest. LukeH 08:44, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
Well. Best bug ever if you ask me. He is the only Argonian follower and Argonians sound so AWESOME and don't have to worry about saving his hide every 5 minutes, like all other followers... That and he saved my hide plenty of times so we are kinda stuck together as adventuring buddies. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.57.52 (talk) at 14:00 on 4 November 2012

He VanishesEdit

Would like to say that when you tell him to go back home, and if he is in the Blades, he'll go back home, which is correct. When I come back to his place then leave WITHOUT him; he vanishes and I have to reload. I did decide to go back to his place, after telling him to go home, then follow him. He walks across the bridge then runs back home and repeat this over and over again. when I fast-travel somewhere else and back OR if I wait, he vanishes and isn't no where to be found. This is kinda annoying when I have to tell him to go back home so I was wondering if anyone knows why this happen. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.1.69 (talk) at 01:54 on 30 January 2012

WabbajackEdit

This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered.

Can someone test to see if it's possible to Wabbajack level Derkeethus then? As I understand it, essentials only get exploded, but, at the same time... Zsword 00:08, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

I've confirmed that you are unable to do use the wabbajack to level him. Best to get him at an appropriate level. That said, is there anyway other way to force him to reset, such a quest or something? — Unsigned comment by 24.22.40.138 (talk) on 21 April 2012

Crossbows, maybe missiles in general.Edit

Something strange I've noticed with Derkeethus, is he won't use his Crossbow, at all. He'll aim, then relax, and repeat this process through the whole battle. The only exception is when enemies get too close to him, then he'll pull out his pickaxe and whatever other weapon he has to fight back, I've noticed he'll favour his pickaxe even if he's got two perfectly good glass knives, or any weapon better than it.Aryeonos (talk)

He needs to have ONLY one type of bolt and a Steel Crossbow. He will refuse to use Dwarven Crossbows and will glitch if you gave him two or more types of bolts. But I recommend not giving him crossbow.. He is better off with his default bow and infinity Daedric Arrows. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.57.52 (talk) at 13:58 on 4 November 2012

Is he always essential, or not?Edit

Judging by the discussion on finding a way to sacrifice him, there seems to be a way to make the status that makes him highly desirable as a follower end. As I understand it, the quest can only end with complete success if you take him out of the cave. So how is there a 'proper' way to complete it that makes him unessential, yet there are plenty of people that are probably plenty of people using him as an invincible adventuring companion and pack mule right now?--Playerseekingbugs (talk) 08:03, 2 December 2012 (GMT)

Idk. I use Derkeethus as a normal adventuring buddy cause he is the only Argonian follower. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.54.63 (talk) at 23:23 on 24 December 2012

Sneak?Edit

How good is his sneak? I was exploring a cave on Solstheim in sneak mode and caught him doing a 'Silent Roll' to get up to me after he killed something. Also, a Bandit walked right past me and him without spotting us once so... Ye'h.

How good is his sneak? — Unsigned comment by 172.129.54.63 (talk) at 23:20 on 24 December 2012

Perks?Edit

Does anyone know what perks Derkeethus has, since I`m on the ps3 I can`t check.--82.46.168.98 16:09, 3 February 2013 (GMT)

He has no perks. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 16:14, 3 February 2013 (GMT)
I`m sure that I`ve seen him perform a slient roll though, whats up with that?--82.46.168.98 18:16, 3 February 2013 (GMT)

Does Derkeethus hum/sing?Edit

I was just mining for ore at the Stalhrim Source on Solstheim, and I heard what sounded like Derkeethus (my current follower) humming some random tune. I thought it would be nice to share this and see if anyone else knows of followers who hum or sing to themselves. -Light-in-His-Eyes (talk) 21:55, 26 February 2013 (GMT)

Yes, he does, he has done this for me too :) It's pretty sweet, actually. 86.131.98.136 21:37, 13 March 2013 (GMT)

QuestionEdit

If I marry Derkeethus and tell him to live in Darkwater, can I adopt children and have the kids live in a hearthfire home? 24.114.92.244 00:10, 19 August 2013 (GMT)

Your kids and spouse must live in the same dwelling. — ABCface 23:44, 20 August 2013 (GMT)
