Quick WalkthroughEdit
- Activate the letter you received.
- Speak with its writer.
- Assault the target.
Detailed WalkthroughEdit
Every time you hit someone, or trigger an "assault", you might trigger this quest. Someone will hear about the assault and send a letter requesting that you come to see them. To start the quest you need to drop the letter and pick it up, then read it. Seek out the person requesting your presence, and they will ask you to hurt someone, maybe even kill them. They will offer to pay you, but will not help if you get caught by any guards. You can refuse the request if you wish.
As the target is usually a normal citizen, it is advisable to not use a weapon when attacking those targets you are not requested to kill, as they do not have much health or defense. Using your hands, or shield-bashing them should be sufficient to complete the task without killing them. Return to your employer and they will be thrilled that you have completed the task, sometimes wondering if there was lots of blood or screaming. Alternatively if you accidentally killed your target when not requested, they will be horrified or scared that it will be traced back to them, and refuse to pay you.
DialogueEdit
When you first approach the NPC:
- You wanted to see me about something?
They can say:
- "I heard you attacked someone in town recently. Thought you might be open to doing it again... for a tidy sum."
- "Heard you hit somebody in town not too long ago. I'll pay to do the same, to a certain special someone."
- "So you like to hurt people, huh? The town is still talking about what you did. You know, I'll pay you to attack one of my enemies..."
- "Yeah. You beat people up. Got someone I want you to hurt. Don't worry, I can pay."
- "Uh... yeah. I know you don't mind hurting people. Just look what you did to... well, you know. I need someone to do that to someone. I'll even pay."
- "I heard you hurt someone in town not too long ago. I'll pay you to hurt someone else. Okay?"
- "I heard about what you did. You hurt someone. Bad. I got someone who deserves a beating, but I need someone else to do it for me. I can pay."
- "Yeah. Uh, I know you hurt someone in town recently. I'd like to pay you to hurt somebody else. For me."
You can then reply with:
- I don't mind hurting someone for money.
- "No funerals, just some pain. If you get caught, it's not my problem."
- "No killing. I'm not hiring the Dark Brotherhood, here. If you get caught, it's not my problem."
- "Just cause some pain. I don't want a death on my conscience. If you get caught, it's not my problem."
- "Hurt him. I mean her. Whichever. No killing though. And I ain't paying your fine if you get caught."
- "I hope I can hear the screams. But don't let on it's from me! And I'm not paying your fine if you get caught."
- "Make it quick, but make it hurt. If you get caught by the guards, I don't know you."
- "Good. No killing, though. Don't get arrested. I won't help you."
- "Make it hurt. But not too much. No killing. And don't let the guards catch you."
- "It should hurt. A lot. But I'm not paying for murder. Oh, if you're caught, it's not my problem."
- "Good. Now remember - pain, and lots of it. But not to the death. If they arrest you, it's not my problem."
If you decline:
- Doesn't sound like something I'm interested in.
- "That's too bad."
If you accepted and speak to them again before the assault:
- "You have a job to do."
- "You want to get paid? Do what I hired you for."
If you kill the person:
- I ended up killing your enemy.
- "They're dead? But now everyone will think I did it!"
- "What have you done? You weren't supposed to murder anyone! Gods..."
- "Good. Wait. Dead? That's not what I asked for. I... uh... you should leave. I need a drink..."
- "Dead? No, no, no, no, no! This is terrible. I don't know you. Get away from me!"
- "Shor's bones! What did you do that for? I would have hired the Dark Brotherhood if I'd wanted that! Get away from me."
- "Really? What did you go and do that for? You... you need to go away."
- "No! Tell me you're joking. Sweet Mara, what have I done? Go away. Just go away."
- "Oh gods, what did you do that for? This is horrible. I'm not paying for murder. Get away from me."
- "What have you done? They'll think I did it. Wait, I did do it! I'm not paying you! This is all your fault!"
If you were successful:
- I did what you asked.
- "Ha! There's nothing like a few cuts and bruises to drive home a point, huh?"
- "Good. Maybe things will be different around here from now on."
- "Good. Let's hope it's a lesson learned."
- "You what? Oh. That. Good. I hope there was a lot of blood."
- "It can't be traced back to me, can it? Was there lot's of crying? I hope so."
- "Really? I hope it hurt."
- "Hmph. Good. That'll teach 'em."
- "Really? Good. Was there a lot of screaming? Never mind. I don't want to know."
- "Were there tears? I hope everyone can see the bruises."
- "Good. I hope it hurt a lot, after all the pain I've been put through."
BugsEdit
- The script on the letter you receive is incomplete. Simply reading the letter will not activate the quest.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.1, fixes this bug.
- To start the quest, you must drop the letter and pick it up again. The letter brings up a debug message when picked up stating that the quest start script needs to be added when books are fully implemented.
- Some NPCs consider "friendly" spells like Heal Other to be an assault, presenting you with a safe way of completing the quest without killing the target.
- Even if the quest requires you not to kill the target, you will still be successful if you kill the target.
- Sometimes, the objective "Report success to <Alias=QuestGiver>" will not disappear from quest log.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.1, fixes this bug.
- You can receive the reward even if you decline the quest.
- If you choose to turn down the job, the NPC may hand you 50 gold and the misc. quest objective to "Meet <radiant NPC> in <radiant location> about a job involving violence." may become stuck in your quest log. Using the setstage command may not work.
- Children are not immune from being targets.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 2.0.5, fixes this bug. (details)

- The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 0.
- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,
<Alias=LocationHold>
) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage WIAssault02 stage
, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest usingresetquest WIAssault02
