To start this quest, read the Nightgate Inn Patron's Note in Nightgate Inn. The note mentions the barrel behind the Inn, investigate the barrel and you will find Undercover Guard's Journal. The journal mentions that a wanted criminal, Pale-Eyes is camping out west of Northwatch Keep.
As you arrive at the camp, you will find a Thalmor wizard and two Thalmor soldiers, once you have dealt with them you can search the corpse of Pale-Eyes to find a full set of enchanted iron plate armor. Once you take his journal, the quest will finish.

- The camp is actually at a secondary location known as the “Clamdigger’s Camp” not far from the Icewater Jetty.
- The Undercover Guard’s Journal can remain as a quest item.

- Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g.,

- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
