Quest-Related EventsEdit
Approaching the mine entrance, you will hear Overseer Thulsgreg and Chief Urzikh arguing.
- Overseer Thulsgreg: "Damn it, Urzikh … chief! We can't risk letting those monsters out. Think about the rest of the clan!"
- Chief Urzikh: "We're Orcs, Thulsgreg. I'm not about to tuck tail while our kin fight for their lives."
If spoken to before the chief, he will be adamant about not letting you in.
- "No one enters the mines! Least of all, some outsider.
I'm not about to let Chief Urzikh endanger the entire stronghold by opening these gates. If she wants to cut me down, so be it! I'll die in service to the clan."
After speaking with Chief Urzikh, you can talk with him to hear his half of the story.
- "If you're here to convince me to turn over the key, save your breath. It's too risky to expose the stronghold to attack. Urzikh knows this, but she's too stubborn to admit it.
Mazog hid the key for good reason. That's all I've got to say about it." - Aren't you concerned for the survivors?
- "Of course I am! Those Orcs are my kin—same as Urzikh! But we have to face facts. They're probably dead.
Chief Urzikh thinks she can solve every problem with her damned alchemy, but enough is enough. I won't allow her to endanger the stronghold." - Alchemy?
- "Yeah. She uses potions that dissolve stone. It makes mining quicker work, sure, but it's not our way. And it's dangerous!
I'd bet my tusks that her alchemy's to blame for the collapse. Meanwhile, my wife's locked in a cage. How's that for irony?" - Where is this cage she's locked in?
- "In a storeroom beneath the longhouse.
Now listen, I don't want you trying to break her out. Neither of you would make it out of the stronghold alive. But you can talk to her if you want. You should hear her side of the story." - Fair enough. I'll talk to Mazog.
- "Fair warning—she's stubborn. More stubborn than I am. So, watch out."
You can then ask him about his opinions on the chief and the alchemy she introduced.
- "Things here could turn ugly any moment. Go talk to Mazog. Just listen to what she has to say, all right?"
- Why do you dislike Chief Urzikh so much? / You really seem to dislike Chief Urzikh.
- "That obvious, eh? For years, my family ruled the stronghold. When my father passed, the role of chief should have fallen to me.
Urzikh's challenge for the title was an affront to the traditions this clan has survived on for generations." - Does your clan always adhere to tradition?
- "Hmph. We abandoned our people's cruder customs long ago. People marry who they wish, for instance. But the traditions we kept are sacred. We honor the Code.
Tradition sustains and protects us. But Chief Urzikh ignores any rule or custom she pleases." - So, you think she stole the title from you?
- "No. Maybe. Truth is, she challenged me in combat and I lost. But only because of her alchemical tricks!
I would have defeated her if she fought like a true Orc, with her fists and her sword!"
- "No. Maybe. Truth is, she challenged me in combat and I lost. But only because of her alchemical tricks!
- "Hmph. We abandoned our people's cruder customs long ago. People marry who they wish, for instance. But the traditions we kept are sacred. We honor the Code.
- "That obvious, eh? For years, my family ruled the stronghold. When my father passed, the role of chief should have fallen to me.
- You have a problem with alchemy? / So, you really have a problem with alchemical mining?
- "It's not just me! Most of the clan's uneasy with it. Orcish culture is built on tradition. Hard work. Without that, we're nothing.
We've mined for generations using nothing but pick and spade. To turn our backs on that is just foolish." - But has the alchemy helped the clan?
- "Yes and no.
Sure, we collect twice the ore in half the time, but it's dangerous. We're miners, not mages! Nobody knows what the tusk they're doing with that stuff. A disaster like this was inevitable."
- "Yes and no.
- "It's not just me! Most of the clan's uneasy with it. Orcish culture is built on tradition. Hard work. Without that, we're nothing.
When you speak with Mazog ask you to collect meat and give it to the clan before you can get the key. With the key in hand, you can return the mine entrance.
- "She gave you the key, did she? I hope she's not wrong in trusting you.
Go on then. Give the chief what she's been waiting for."
Once the door is unlocked, the Urzikh and Thulgreg will run inside. You will catch up to them in the first large chamber where they have found Yagut.
- "Damn it, none of this would have happened if we'd been working the stone with our hands instead of Urzikh's potions.
Ugh. I guess we should focus on the task at hand—finding the survivors."
After speaking with Chief Urzikh, she and Thulsgreg will head down one passage looking for survivors and you will search the other. After finding a couple of miners and hearing their stories, you can catch up with Thulsgreg at the location of the cave-in. Zurgrol and Opgog will be digging at the rubble while Thulsgreg and Urzikh argue over what to do.
- Chief Urzikh "We'll never get to them in time at this rate! We need to dissolve the stone!"
- Overseer Thuslgreg: "Open your eyes, Urzikh. It's too unstable. We can't risk a larger collapse!"
He will be convinced that using the Stonemelt Potion will cause a collapse.
- "You don't have to be a mine foreman to see how unstable those tunnels are. If Chief Urzikh uses more of her stonemelt, we're all going to die!"
- Chief Urzikh seems pretty confident it will work.
- "She's an alchemist. I'm a mine overseer. I think I've got a better handle on how to move stone.
Ugh. It was only a matter of time before her pride betrayed us. Guess it's fitting that we both get crushed together down here."
Meanwhile Chief Urzikh will have you create the Stonemelt Potion.
- "Are you really going to participate in her madness? Damn it. Maybe Mazog shouldn't have trusted you after all.
Well, I'm not going anywhere. I guess we'll all die together."
As you read the recipe, Thulgreg can be heard giving orders.
- Chief Urzikh "Keep at it! No one stops digging until we break through."
Once you have made the potion you can throw it at the rocks. Thulsgreg will convinced that it cause another collapse.
- "Don't do it! You'll bring the rest of the mine down upon us!"
You have no choice but to go ahead with it. There will be an immediate reaction as a cloud of green smoke emerges.
- Chief Urzikh "It's working, everyone stand back!"
- <The workers flee and the rocks glow red hot before disappearing.>
- Chief Urzikh "Well done! Can your shovels and pickaxes compete with that, Thulsgreg?"
- Overseer Thuslgreg: "Even a blind echatere finds a pumpkin once in a while. It was luck and nothing more … chief."
If you speak with him afterwards, he will still think the cave-in was the potion's fault.
- "Don't be fooled by this, outsider. We'll learn the truth of this cave-in soon enough, and Chief Urzikh will have to admit her mistake."
The Chief will ask you to go first and clear the way, eventually you come to the cavern where the collapse started. There will be deep chasms in the floor, leading down to Blackreach and is how the Falmer entered the mine. When Urzikh finds you she'll ask you to look for survivors on the scaffolding. Your search will lead you to find that Mazog altered the recipe to make the work go faster which is what caused the collapse.
Afterwards, Thulsgreg will enter through another passage below you.
- Overseer Thulsgreg: "There you are! I've searched everywhere—haven't found anyone. Anything up there?"
You need to tell him what you found. He'll be shocked.
- "Everyone made it out except for the three down here. Any luck finding them?
Find any proof of the chief's carelessness?" - Mugha survived, but the others didn't. Mazog altered the stonemelt recipe and caused the collapse.
- "Overseer Thulsgreg encouraged me to clear a path up ahead to a secondary exit so he and Mugha can leave safely."
- "She what? No, there has to be some mistake.
Mazog would never hurt the clan on purpose. She's only tries to protect us!" - She was trying to meet Chief Urzikh's production demands while cutting time spent in the mine.
- "You see? Chief Urzikh is just as much to blame! She should have explained this alchemy properly! She should have eased our work schedules! I ….
We can argue about who's right later. Right now, we need to focus on getting out of the mine." - Can't we go back the way we came?
- "We'd have to fight through those creatures again. There's another entry point this way. You just need to make a path for us.
I'll help Mugha and follow as soon as it's clear."
After speaking with him, you can head down the passage and unblock the exit with the last of the Stonemelt Potion.
- "Regardless what happened with Mazog, or my feelings about Chief Urzikh, Mugha is kin … and a friend.
I'll get him to safety. You just need to clear a path."
After using the potion, before exiting the mine:
- "If we don't have tradition, what do we have?"
Back down in the stronghold, you'll find everyone involved in the incident on the platform in front of the longhouse. It is time for the truth to come out and judgement.
- Overseer Thulsgreg: "Chief Urzikh, we don't need to do this in public."
- Chief Urzikh "I need to know … everyone needs to know what happened down there, Thulsgreg."
- <Chief Urzikh speaks louder so everyone can hear.
- Chief Urzikh "This clan has suffered enough resentful whispers and bad blood. It's time to clear the air!"
Overseer Thulsgreg wants to talk to you first with a request.
- "Please, just listen.
Mazog would never put the clan in danger on purpose. She was misguided, and she acted rashly, but she was only trying to meet the chief's demands. When Urzikh finds out …. Mazog shouldn't suffer for trying to protect her kin." - What kind of punishment will Mazog receive for causing the cave-in?
- "She'll suffer the Blood Price. It's how we punish our own. Rather than imprison them or make them unfit to work, we extract the tusks of those who fail the clan.
Better than the blood-letting, I guess. But it's said to be excruciating." - You think the chief will follow through with it?
- "She'll take pleasure in it, unless you persuade her otherwise.
Please, just talk to her. Convince her not to punish Mazog. Urzikh may be blinded by her anger, but she bears some of the blame, too. A failure in the clan is a failure of the chief."
At this point, you can decide whether or not to convince Chief Urzikh to be lenient on Mazog. If you speak with him before making a choice:
- "I stand by my wife … no matter what the outcome."
If you suggest to Chief Urzikh that she spare Mazog, Thurzog will be relieved.
- Chief Urzikh "Hear your chief! Mazog made a foolish mistake. But there has been enough bloodshed today."
- Overseer Thulsgreg: "Thank you, Chief Urzikh. Thank you!"
- <He walks over to Mazog and unties her.>
- Chief Urzikh "As chief, I shoulder the blame as well. We Orcs are slow to forgive. But we will forgive!"
In light of this decision, Thulsgreg is willing to work with the chief to find middle ground between their two methods of mining.
- "Thank you, outsider! You've saved this clan from ruin and my wife from unimaginable pain. I don't know how you convinced the chief to have mercy, but I don't care! This is great news.
Maybe I misjudged Urzikh. We'll see." - Have you changed your mind about Chief Urzikh?
- "Perhaps I was too quick to judge. I disrespected her, but she still found it in her heart to free Mazog.
I will support Chief Urzikh going forward. You have my word. For the good of the clan, maybe we can find middle ground."
However, if you decided that Chief Urzikh needed to take the Blood Price, the following will happen:
- Chief Urzikh "Hear your chief! The evidence is clear. Mazog is to blame for the mine disaster. I will take the Blood Price!"
- Thulsgreg: "No …."
- Chief Urzikh "I'm sorry, Thulsgreg. Tradition demands it."
If you talk to him afterwards:
- "Damn it! Mazog doesn't deserve this. She's a good, honest Orc. She only wanted to help!
Chief Urzikh will rip out her tusks, and Mazog will forever bear the mark of shame. I … I wish I could have protected her." - Will you be all right?
- "All right? No, I don't think so. Mazog is my wife. To see her hurt—disfigured … it's a pain few could bear. But we're Orcs. We bear burdens and keep moving.
We'll work through it. We'll show both the chief and the clan how tough we really are."
