The erudition of an alchemist is generally based on the persistence and thirst for knowledge of the person concerned. Finally, the little plants, herbs, and berries must be collected, compared, tested and cataloged. It requires a lot of trouble from the alchemist to try and objectively - yes, objectively - to transfer the precious things to a catalog, while respecting a comprehensible system. Certainly tasting carries some risks that can easily lead to the person's death.
But it would be much worse if you were not systematically cataloging and the student trusts these. So the probability of a painful incident would be even higher, especially in light of the fact that the student himself was not clear about the risks of his actions.
