The Holy Book Tombs

The Holy Book Tombs is an underground vault containing a multitude of books and scrolls. The entrance is actually buried in the sand on the south side of the building, marked by some broken boards. You won't be able to enter unless you do the quest The Chalice and the Stone.

Related QuestsEdit

ExteriorEdit

  • The exterior is located at coordinates: ODDDesert01 3,-4
  • This location does not have a map marker.

Zone 1: Spilled VaultEdit

(Note: This is actually ODDDesertBibliothek02, but the entrance leads here, so we'll call it Zone 1.)

A ladder leads down from the entrance to a rocky passage with some cobwebs, a spider, and an open coffin containing a mummified monk holding a gold sack. Go down the stairs to the door leading to the next level.

Zone 2: Holy Book Tombs 1Edit

(Note: This is ODDDesertBibliothek01.)

The door here opens into a short passage that leads to a large sunken room. Niches filled with books run along the walls below the gallery; a set of stairs leads up to the second level. If you're here seeking the book (see The Chalice and the Stone, it's up on the gallery, on a podium opposite the entrance. If you're just here to browse, you'll find all manner of books and scrolls here, including a few skill books.

Unless you're doing the quest, you won't be able to proceed any further. Once you get the vision, a pile of sand at the base of the stairs will vanish, revealing a lever. Pull this, and a secret door will open, granting access to the next level.

Zone 3: Holy Book Tombs 2Edit

A short passage lined with more niches containing books and scrolls leads to a larger room dominated by a tall statue of some forgotten god (it's actually Anubis, but he doesn't exist in Oblivion...). There are more goodies in the niches and on the table here, so be sure to take the time to look around, if you're interested. Go to the statue and activate it, and you'll hear a random riddle:

  • Free and single can I scare you, tethered yet awake concern you, tied up annoy exploring. Answer: "Bear"
  • Veiling and veiled, I give birth, only tears without pain. I rise and often prophesy danger. I penetrate skyward and am forlorn. The mother who gave birth to me, is not begotten without me. Answer: "Smoke"
  • I have a head but no body, a heart but no blood, leaves but no branches. What am I? Answer: "Lettuce"

If you get the riddle right, the wall behind the statue will disappear, revealing a set of stairs to the fourth zone.

Zone 4: Tomb of the DeadEdit

From the entrance, follow the passage forward (there are no side passages), dealing with the mummy when you encounter it. A doorway opens into a natural tunnel (with another mummy) leading down to a large water-filled cave. In a niche to the right above a coffin, you'll see a switch; turn it, and the wall at the bottom, under the water, will open. There's a coffin on a ledge to your left just past the wall, if you care to loot it; otherwise, swim down to the ladder at the very bottom, which leads out to the nearby lake.
