Njangr in Skyrim
Njangr the archer makes a bet

Once, when the Altmer marksman Njangr reached the city of Windhelm in the far north, his reputation was already hurrying in advance of him and the local townspeople's green painted shutters slammed shut in a cannon of southern temperament. Njangr looked around. The snowy streets were empty; he could see his breath in front of him that rose like the smoke from a freshly-fed fireplace to the chimney.

Suddenly he saw a man in a black cloak, which stood out from its surroundings as the moon in the clearest sky. Njangr was surprised not to have noticed the man before, but he was so conspicuous in the street, that he would not have been more striking, had he shouted in his ear. The stranger began to move and came with a sure step towards Njangr, who clenched his fist and held his bow tighter; the stranger had something incalculable that made Njangr nervous.

"You are Njangr, right?" asked the stranger.

Njangr didn't know the man, whose face he could now see clearly. A scar across his chin decorated the stranger's face, and his gray hair hung down over his face. He did not seem older than Njangr himself. "Yes, I am he. And with whom do I have the pleasure?"

"They once called me Rolaraan, but my name is not important. I want to propose a bet."

"A bet?" Njangr looked at Rolaraan incredulously.

"I heard you were the best archer who walks under the sun," Rolaraan said, "and I would like to test that. Your bow is indeed noble, but even the most noble bow is nothing more than a blunt tool in the hands of an incompetent. If you can manage it, the straw doll there." He pointed above to an entity approximately 200 meters distant that waved wildly at the head of the local church. The cold wind had increased and was so sharp, like a freshly sharpened knife. "If you manage to shoot down this straw man, I'll give you one piece of advice that could guide you through this barren land into a fertile region like in a short time, but before that, you should prove to me that you're worth the counsel."

Njangr looked at the stranger who had identified himself as Rolaraan in the eyes. His gaze was fixed and proved strength. Many thoughts shot through the Altmer's head: He had to leave Cyrodiil and was now looking an area which offered him food and even a certain level of comfort. However, he believed this to be so far away from the north, as it was only some. And this stranger wanted to say how he could achieve a fertile region in a few days? It sounded tempting, and the task that had been put to him in return was anything but hard for him.

So without reply to the stranger, he set his bow. The dragon skin tendon flexed only slightly as he pulled it to his chin. The arrow was like a ray of light on his fingers, a beam of light would blur any moment in the shade. He loved this bow; it had become as much a part of him as his right hand or his eyesight. He felt free, as soon as he held it in his hands.

When he sighted the target, the cold wind penetrated his skin, and he felt very uncomfortable. He had problems concentrating on the shot. "What is that straw doll doing high up there?" he thought. The child who owned the doll was certainly unfortunate for the loss. "Concentrate!"

He let go of the string, and the arrow shot through the air, leaving behind only the whistling sound of a back rapidly emerging branch. Njangr looking over him with perfect confidence in his eyes, without checking whether or not the arrow had really pierced its target. Rolaraan other hand, raised his hand to his forehead to shade his eyes and peered into the distance.

"My advice is:" Rolaraan began. "Go to the east, where you will meet your destiny."

"That is your advice? According to my knowledge a vast, barren, snowy wasteland extends in an easterly direction. Nothing testifies to fertility," Njangr replied, a little annoyed.

"Are you saying I have cheated you? If so, let me give you some advice: hold on to you your friends, Njangr."

Njangr was about to respond when the stranger disappeared in a flash of light.
