Alftand is a Dwarven ruin found in the province of Skyrim, within the region of Winterhold. Alftand is unique when compared to other dwarven ruins because it is the only one built partially atop of an active glacier. The Dwemer of Alftand have their own unique style of iconography. The Great Lift at Alftand, which leads into Blackreach, can be found in the Pale, overlooking the main road and Lake Yorgrim.
Alftand was partially built atop of an active glacier, off the coast of the region of Winterhold. The city of Alftand is one of the four known cities in Skyrim to contain an entrance to Blackreach, a massive underground cavern inhabited by the Falmer and other similar creatures. Like many other Dwarven cities, Alftand became abandoned.
During the Skyrim Civil War in 4E 201, an expedition delved into Alftand, only to fall apart deeper into the ruins. After meeting the Grandmaster of the Greybeards, the Last Dragonborn would need an Elder Scroll to activate the Time-Wound on the Throat of the World, to learn the Thu'um, Dragonrend. Clues revealed to the Last Dragonborn brought them to Alftand, where they uncovered the ill-fated expedition led by Sulla Trebatius and entered Blackreach, where they found the Tower of Mzark, and an Elder Scroll. With this scroll, the Dragonborn learned Dragonrend and begun their first battle against Alduin.
