maplinkEdit

Hi, I was thinking to do a icon for {{maplink}} so it would not use those (map) representations but there is no such template? Black magic? Ek1 (talk) 12:34, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

I think the template you're looking for is {{Map Link}}. Did you see something calling "maplink" somewhere? Robin Hood  (talk) 13:33, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

TemplatesEdit

I hugely disagree with naming templates by their most used name. They should be at their full name for people to easily see what they are for. Having them at abbreviations makes them much harder to understand. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 16:36, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

If you have a counter argument I'd love to hear it. Otherwise please undo all the moves I've just done because none of them are at their most used name, and most never will be. That includes moving VN to Vn too. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 16:51, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
Seeing as you have nothing to say I've gone ahead and marked the VN template as needs renaming. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 17:21, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
I had nothing to say because I hadn't gotten the message yet. The counter-argument is that redirects, while trivial, still consume at least some processor power, as does using the longer name as the primary name, though as I said, in most cases that's probably negligible. When talking about high-use templates, those trivialities start to add up. The double-move has really futzed with the "What Links Here", so right now, Wip is just a mess of duplications, but I believe that's the higher-use one (e.g., Lore:Sotha Sil appears in both, but is in fact only using "Wip"). It looks like you're right about VN, though. That probably should have been Vn. That was my mistake. Maybe before moving any more high-traffic templates, we should start a discussion about it. Robin Hood  (talk) 17:58, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
This was a massive change to many high use templates without any sort of discussion. That discussion should have happened BEFORE all these moves, not after. I'm considering rolling back the lot of the moves until a proper discussion can be made. Edits like this are hugely disruptive, especially when made without consensus. Jeancey (talk) 18:04, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
There already exists full name templates where the majority of uses are actually using shortcuts. Template space should not be and isn't immune to the standard article capitalisation. Therefore Wip is wrongly named, and should be at WIP if using abbreviations or the full name to allow for using the uncapped redirect. These are uncontroversial moves so long as you don't view template space as being allowed to follow idiotic naming standards, the same type of standards that are now abhorrent to find in files or other articles and wouldn't last an hour if newly created. There are a handful of templates that I had no idea what they were for simply by name alone, who knows how many of them would cause consternation to a newcomer. How many people reading can tell what the template {{C}} is used for without clicking the link?
(edit conflict) Jeancey if you undo these moves you will be doubling up the server load only to see them moved back later. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:17, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
I agree with capitalisation but I think at least vn, wip and ec need to exist primarily at their lowercase abbreviations. Are there any other abbreviations? --Enodoc (talk) 18:26, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Template space is an absolute mess of different capitalizations, and I absolutely applaud your desire to make things more consistent! In the end, I think that's something we should really we working on. But when you're talking about existing, highly transcluded pages, there are a lot of things to take into consideration, ideally before any moves occur. Let's have that discussion, preferably in a more public venue than my talk page, before making any hasty decisions. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:30, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

() There are plenty of abbreviations, not so many as the main template. An example would be {{Al}} and basically all the namespace shortcuts (BM, DB, SR). Abbreviations or shortened versions that are more in use than their full name are Uns/Uns2 and od/OD, Speed/Prod. There are some templates that use a game abbreviation before stating their use, though more use the full game name. The only reason anyone would undo the partial-capitilising moves I made is pure egotism (eg Discussion moved to Discussion Moved). The links to them can be updated removing any server load associated with using redirects. There's no logical argument to oppose them when a number of previous examples have gone through with the barest of prompts (#Cite book). And people follow moves, they'll it capped and start using the capped name, especially after the uncapped names are deleted. There are other templates that could do with moving, and they will have the barest impact on the server, some depending only on admin activity prior to when they are moved (Speedydeletion should be moved to Speedy Deletion). Some templates I had little-to-no intention of altering becuase their use is limited solely to other templates, though even then they still lack obvious knowledge (eg FacReact, TemProtect (should at least be TempProtect though)). Having a discussion about the necessity to move something only delays the point at which the server is impacted, it does not stop it. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:00, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Yes, there are plenty of abbreviations that don't follow the same pattern as others. As I said above, template space is a mess in a lot of ways. Please don't project your assumptions of motive onto me or anyone else. Quite simply, they're wrong, and they don't aid this discussion in any way. Much of the rest of what you've said, I agree with. As far as having a discussion goes, though, what that does is makes sure that the server impact of a large move only occurs once, not multiple times from people having different concerns and following different rules.
Since you initiated this, please start a discussion about your ideas on how to go about this somewhere else (or copy this one, if you prefer). Or someone else can, I'm not really that concerned about who gets the ball rolling. I'm rather busy with something else right now, and this isn't what I need to deal with right now. This discussion should involve the rest of the community so the decision is, hopefully, final. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:45, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

CK helpEdit

Hi Rob, a quick question from me. I'm trying to play this quest but short of console commands I can't get it to start. Essentially I need to speak to a certain NPC but the topic never comes up. I had a quick look in the CK and I think I've found the bug: one of the conditions attached to the dialogue is IsPS3==1. According to this page, that means the condition requires you to be playing on PS3, which would explain why it's not showing up for me. Does this sound right or have I got the wrong end of the stick? Thanks! --SerCenKing (talk) 16:49, 6 September 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, that sounds like a bug alright. They probably meant for it to be another function, like IsPCSleeping or something like that, and just typed the wrong one without noticing. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:22, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
Brilliant, thank you! --SerCenKing (talk) 11:09, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks!Edit

Just wanted to thank you for the courtesy edits, much appreciated! --Rezalon (talk) 02:31, 6 November 2019 (GMT)

No problem, I was just doing template maintenance after Silencer pointed out that there were a lot of blank spaces being left by the template now (which I'm pretty sure was caused by a change in MediaWiki itself). Especially in that scenario, it's hard to figure out what something used to look like, so on some of the user pages, I had to guess. Most of the Lore pages and such were easier, since they follow a specific format...or at least they're supposed to. :) Robin Hood  (talk) 09:29, 6 November 2019 (GMT)

GadgetsEdit

As discussed, mostly in frustration earlier, i've been attempting to get the wikEd editor I use to work as a gadget. The scripts are functional (with one set of strange buttons) on the wiki as they are.

Copies on en.uesp: wikEd.js, wikEdDiff.js & diff.js
Copies on dev.uesp: wikEd.js, wikdEdDiff.js & diff.js.

Both sets of .js work correctly, and enable the show changes without page loading functionality. When imported as a gadget, I can't get that one feature to work. The rest functions as is should do.

I've tried copying both wikEd and wikEdDiff into the gadgets pages in their entirety as well as importing them as WP recommends but none of those get that feature to work.

The sheets work fully when manually imported, unless theres a magical brainwave about it, i'd suggest moving the files in my userspace to UESPWiki:Javascript/ as they are which will enable full functionality for those that want it. If the gadget can't be fixed, which i'm not an expert at this stuff so it may well be something easy i'm missing, i'd go for a slightly seperate version with the show changes without page loading functionality removed which would give a good portion of its utility easily accessible by most.

On a slightly more positive note, I created the gadget for "ajaxRC" with no issues and this is currently available and working correctly. The following pages will want their content type changing: UESPWiki:Javascript/ajaxRC.js and potentially MediaWiki:Gadget-ajaxRC.js. As well, can UESPWiki:Javascript/ajaxRC.js be fully write/move protected in-line with the other java pages? Thanks! Kiz(email - talk) 02:20, 10 November 2019 (GMT)

No thanksEdit

I've been contributing to this site for 9 years, and you only bothered to post a welcome message on my discussion page now that I'm on the radar because admins are ganging up to badger me for a "necro post" contribution to a discussion page of all things. Sorry, I'm done with this wiki. --HunterZ (talk) 07:24, 10 November 2019 (GMT)

On the contrary, I failed to notice the timeline, and only noticed the relatively small number of posts. I apologize if that came across poorly. I've already posted a response to Kiz's actions on your talk page, but please feel free to post either here or there if you'd like to discuss it further. I'm also available on the Discord server if you'd prefer. Robin Hood  (talk) 07:26, 10 November 2019 (GMT)
