Should JPEG really be the recommended default, instead of PNG? PNG (or other lossless) would make more sense for maps.

JPEG is likely to yield artefacts given the high contrast gradients (sharp edges+transitions), since it's designed for the likes of photographs. It should be entirely possibly to make the likes of PNG no larger than, if not smaller than, the equivalent JPEG.
