Quick WalkthroughEdit
Detailed WalkthroughEdit
Follow the road east from Vhul, and you'll soon encounter an imperial mage named Vontus. If you talk to him, he will propose you a 25 gold bet on whether you are able to win the race with him or not. If you agree, he will cast some unknown spell and run as quickly as a meteor to the south, but you can't technically pursue him as he will immediately disappear. If you follow the road south (and then take the left fork) you will enter Saveri. Here you will find Vontus's corpse just under a tree, not far north from Valam's house. Search the body for some gold and the enchanted Boots of Lightning Speed. These are a pair of rather useless boots which can fortify your athletics by up to 1000 for 20 seconds while damaging you with lightning.
NotesEdit
- Vontus's body is naked, as he ran so fast that he apparently lost his clothes. You can find some of them (pants, belt and glove) if you follow the road in the direction where he disappeared until you enter Saveri.
- Vontus's clothes are unique since they have unique ids and don't stack with generic expensive clothing while in your inventory - making them a collector's item.
BugsEdit
- Vontus's body may disappear if you take too long to find him, which makes this quest uncompletable without the use of console commands.

10 | On the road east of Vhul, I met an Imperial called Vontus who was eager to bet against me. After taking my 25 septims, he ran off southwards at a tremendous speed, screaming in apparent pain. I am supposed to "catch" him. | |
100 | I have found Vontus dead near the Saveri hamlet. Whether he hit an obstacle or fell victim to the deleterious side of his enchantment is hard to determine, but for what it's worth, I now have his enchanted boots. |
