Skyrim talk:Mourning Never Comes

Alain Dufont DeadEdit

What happens if you've already killed Alain Dufont before starting this quest? I'm asking this because I cleared out the ruins and killed Alain before even beginning the Dark Brotherhood questline. --Neekerisanni123 21:58, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

The quest is pretty quick, and you don't get the bonus for killing Nilsine (unless you've already done that too, or she died randomly). --Morrolan (talk) 15:25, 12 August 2013 (GMT)

Possible bug, needs confirmationEdit

Talking to Nilsine after receiving the quest but before talking to Muiri gives mid-assassination dialogue options, referencing being sent by Muiri. — Unsigned comment by 80.176.73.218 (talk) at 20:55 on 29 December 2011

Yep, true. I'll add it. Wolok gro-Barok 22:03, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I can also confirm this. I was very confused. 68.113.75.242 07:35, 29 June 2013 (GMT)

Oblivion reference?Edit

This may well be a reference to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:When_the_Vow_Breaks if you think about it. --Darkness has risen... 06:41, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Starting prerequisites?Edit

I've just handed in the three first contracts, left the Sanctuary, and returned on the next day. Still, this quest does not seem to start. Is there a certain number of days that need to pass or another event to happen first? — Unsigned comment by WooShell (talkcontribs) at 10:57 on 27 June 2012 edit: in the meantime, I've finished CW, TG and DA questlines and gained ten levels, and this quest still does not start. Seems like a bug. WooShell 00:47, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

You might weant to check on Muiri, Nilsine, Alain, and Astrid, to make sure that they're still alive and functioning. I don't know if this conflicts with the quest in Windhelm about the butcher, due to Nilsine being involved in both, so if you've started that one you may need to finish it first. Ask Nazir about things to make sure you haven't missed any dialogue. Vely►Talk►Email 20:09, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
It does conflict with Blood on the Ice (it can trigger a bug in BOTI), but there's no code in place fixing the conflict. You can do both at once if you're careful about it. --Morrolan (talk) 15:03, 14 August 2013 (GMT)
I have this problem too - I think. I can't get neither of the two quests to start. I haven't killed anybody involved in neither quest. I had to use console to get the waking up in the abandoned shack where Astrid first introduces herself and the Dark Brotherhood to the character, so I wondered if that had anything to do with it. I've done the Cidhna Mine prison break-out quest, so if Alain lives in Markath I guess he could be dead. If this is the case, or if any of the other involved characters are dead, is it possible to revive them and trigger the quest way? 188.182.253.142 00:35, 4 September 2013 (GMT) AmaDraque.
Yes, I had this problem and it triggered a bug in both quests, Blood on The Ice and Mourning Never Comes. BOTI wouldn't progress and I couldn't pick up MNC. Now I've completed BOTI using a console command to make it proceed and I've been back to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, but I still cannot pick up MNC. - I'll have to check up on where the Alain character should be found and see if I've killed him. I'll be back with an update about how it turns out. 188.182.253.142 07:45, 4 September 2013 (GMT) AmaDraque.
Update: I've checked out who Alain is, but I haven't been to the location where he can be found, so I can't have killed him. Muiri is alive and well too. I'm now trying to find a console command to get the quest started.188.182.253.142 03:37, 5 September 2013 (GMT) AmaDraque.
I'm giving up. I'm now on my sixth run through Skyrim, and on none of those, this quest started the way it should. So, either the condition preventing the starting is so blatantly simple that I'm failing it every time, even though I'm playing different orders on the main questlines each time (which I doubt, since this would mean a lot of people have the same problem, and it would have been patched by now), or it's something very specific that I just happen to repeat each time due to blind luck or habit. I also can't seem to find a way to reliably start this quest. Using the startquest and setstage commands seems to get the whole questline out of sync.. i.e. none of the following quests will be triggered as planned, they all need to be started manually. Seems like they are checking on preconditions which aren't set when force-starting Mourning never comes (e.g. Ciceros physical presence at the sanctuary?) WooShell (talk) 01:45, 10 November 2014 (GMT)

Astrid sends me again on this mission.Edit

I've completed "Whispers in the Dark", and Astrid sends me to Markart again, and i cannot talk with her about anything else.I tried to use "setstage BD03 200 and others number, but nothing change. I dont have "Mourning Never Comes" in complete or uncomplete missions.

I started "The Silence Has Been Broken" and I cant do stage 20, i can't give amulet and letter to Her. — Unsigned comment by 89.76.81.61 (talk) at 19:01 on 8 July 2012

I also have this problem. It seems to have been caused (for me anyway) when I did "resetquest db03" so that muiri would stop saying she's thankful to me for getting rid of her targets, since I married her. No console commands I try to use seem to help out. — Unsigned comment by 72.84.131.92 (talk) at 22:21 on 14 August 2012

I can't get this quest.Edit

After completing the first three-in-one contracts given by Nazir, making sure Blood On The Ice is completed, and checking that every NPC needed for this quest is alive, I returned to the sanctuary but still do not get the quest ('Mourning Never Comes'). I then wanted to trigger/initiate the quest with a console command but haven't been able to find anything about how to do that. 188.182.253.142 09:29, 6 September 2013 (GMT) AmaDraque.

Did Cicero show up at the Sanctuary? If not, you may have encountered a serious bug. — Unsigned comment by 71.162.234.65 (talk) at 04:22 on 19 September 2013
I've got the same problem. It's my second playthrough and Cicero never showed up. Blood on the ice is over, all the requested NPCs are alive (hard to tell for Cicero because when I player.moveto him I appear in front of the door of the Dawnstar Sanctuary where I see no Cicero, but he's probably just disabled even though he's alive). Perhaps I should have accepted Nazir's contracts one by one, if even possible. Gonna try. Niriel (talk) 15:10, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Nilsine already deadEdit

I see a note that Nilsine can be killed before the quest, but no mention of the fact that her premature death will not trigger the objective to kill her to be automatically ticked off in the journal. The game seems to only check for her death when you get back to Muiri. At which point she acts as if you did kill Nilsine as requested and gives you the bonus. --72.106.60.143 07:40, 12 December 2013 (GMT)

Possible bug - Nilsine just vanished?Edit

I am quite sure that Nilsine has not been killed accidentally and I'm very sure that I haven't killed her. She seems just vanished from all of Windhelm, doesn't sleep in house or do anything. Could this possibly be linked to Blood On the Ice -bug, which quest I triggered complete because of the bug? 80.220.121.186 21:02, 26 February 2014 (GMT)

Cicero's JournalsEdit

In my last playthough Cicero's journals 1-4 never appeared, so I reloaded two of my earliest saves and it seems that if Alain Dufont has been killed before to starting this quest is the reason why this happen, my assumption is that the journals should appear during the stages 20 or 40, but if Alain is dead both stages are skipped and when you return to the sanctuary, the journals will not be in Cicero's room. --Diegohmfbtr (talk) 15:30, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
