Skyrim talk:Dragon Rising
"Dovahkin, wait"Edit
I started up a new character, and briefly saw a subtitle... "Mirmulnir: Dovahkin, wait." I was wondering if anybody else has seen this, or found anything related to this. Speltz 08:55, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
- Dragons often mutter words during combat, though they're hard to understand without subtitles on. But it's the usual trite game boss jargon: vows that they'll never been defeated, that you're too weak, cries of "wait" or "stop" when they're weak, yadda yadda yadda. Just FYI, this is not a forum. Use of talk pages is limited to discussions regarding the page and its scope. In most situations, this is not the place for the "did this happen to anyone else" conversation. Minor Edits 09:07, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
- It is relevant when it is discussing a possible bug or other anomaly. In the case of dragons speaking, this is not technically true. Random dragons have attacks that are in addition to their breath attacks - these are typically used when the Dragonborn is too far away to be affected by the breath attack. These attacks are considered shouts and are denoted as such in the game files. However, these attacks are not "voiced" as Alduin's attacks are in the prologue, so it is incorrect to say they are "hard to understand." There is no audible element to suggest they are shouts or elements of the dragon language because they are not audible. This and the prologue are instances where the experience of playing with subtitles on and off will vary considerably. For example, is it really necessary for a new player to know that the dragon attacking Helgen is Alduin? Does he wear a nametag? Kastagir 07:01, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Problems in QuestEdit
I started a new game and got Lydia as a follower from the jarl before I did the quest where you have to kill the hagraven to get the nettlebane. Now, I cant give the Nettlebane to Lydia even if i ask her to wait somewhere. I also tried to give it to her, but you can't give quest items to your companions. I am being forced to restart because the quest marker will not disappear. Does anyone else have this issue?
- WTF? You don't give Lydia Nettlebane you give Danica in the Temple of Kynareth Nettlebane! Lord Eydvar 04:38, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
Fire breath, Dunmer advantage...Edit
If you overlevel a bit(I was ~20) it is possible for the dragon to be a frost dragon(yes, even though the tower is burning and the bodies are charred), so the description should be more neutral about this. 178.183.233.70 12:13, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Lydia failing to spawnEdit
After playing through Skyrim twice, I decided to play it through a third time. After I killed the dragon at the (west?) tower, I returned to the Jarl and completed the quest. He made me thane and told me he would grant me with a follower named Lydia. I then bought the house from the steward (forgot his name) for 5,000. When I went outside, there was no Lydia. In my other playthroughs, she had always automatically approached me as soon as I left Dragonsreach. So I went to my house thinking she might be inside, but she wasn't inside the house either. I tried to move to her location by typing player.moveto, but the game said her ID was non-existent. I typed in the Jarl's ID and warped to him just fine, but if I tried to warp to non-existent Lydia, the game said she didn't exist. So I ended up using player.placeatme and she popped up next to me and I was able to get her to be my follower. She had all the correct speech commands so I'm not sure why she never showed up on her own. I reloaded an earlier save (a save before I had killed the dragon) and every single time I completed the quest, she never showed up after I talked to the Jarl. I tried playing from that old save 5 times, and all 5 times she never showed up, so I'm assuming something went wrong before I took the quest. Lydia wasn't dead or killed, and I was following the main quest as it was given to me (I didn't wander off and do any misc. dungeons). Just be sure to make a save before taking the dragon quest from the Jarl I guess. (99.136.224.214 04:29, 14 December 2011 (UTC))
Thank you! Thats exactly why I am on this page and Its my third playthrough as well. Maybe a new undiscovered rare bug that upon becoming thane she is not created into the world wich would explain why her ID comes up as non exhisting and we were the unlucky ones to get it. Anyway just to clarify to use the baseid A2C8E and not the refid a2c94. it will look exactly like: player.placeatme A2C8E 1 Jet4571 05:42, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- My third char, and no Lydia for me either, though I managed to break her appearance on my second game as well, just in a different way: then, she did actually exist ingame but just wasn't enabled. This time, she doesn't exist at all. Aliana 20:30, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- One problem with using placeatme is that Lydia won't have the right RefID. I doubt it'll break any further quests, but it's a bit annoying (especially if you're using a bat file to fix the levelup bugs). Aliana 21:13, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- I went back to a save from after retrieving the Dragonstone but before handing it in (i.e. before Dragon Rising was started), went through that again, and still no Lydia. My guess is that it's probably not some magic "third character" issue, but more likely a bug caused by clicking through the conversation: it's useful exposition the first time, but very tedious after that, so by the time you've already heard it more than once you just want it to be over. I know I rushed through it on my second char, when I had a similar (but different) bug with Lydia not spawning properly. Aliana 22:06, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- So much for that idea: I let him finish each time, but still no Lydia. It could well still be something like needing to use some particular (non-default) response, like asking one of the optional questions, which again is something you're likely to do the first time or two, but whatever it is I'm not going to bother trying to work it out: I'll wait till the CK comes out and hopefully someone will fix it quickly once that happens. Aliana 22:19, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- One thought: it might be the patch that broke it, since the first report wasn't until Dec 14. Aliana 01:46, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yay, I think I've figured it out! :D It looks like the patch broke Lydia being created in Dragonsreach the way she used to be, but once you buy and enter Breezehome, her refid becomes valid: but still not enabled, which is the bug I ran into on my second char (which was also post-patch). That's the same behavior that all the other housecarls have, so it does make sense, apart from the bug with her not being enabled properly. Maybe they changed her to be a "normal" housecarl, but the old Dragonsreach-spawn script was what enabled her originally, or something like that. Aliana 02:10, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
Lydia failing to spawn just started for me on my 7th and 8th character created. I was assuming it has something to do with the mods I run more than a bug in game. I have Wars In Skyrim and Deadly Dragons plus armor, weapon replacers and CBBE, not to mention spells galore mods. I have yet to completely finish the main storyline at all on any of my toons. I am just a bad altoholic. Reading this, I wonder if I should turn off a mod or two. I have not patched my game at all still, I always wait a good long time before game patches. NOTE: neither times did I click thru the conversation with the jarl. I like hearing the jarl's brother call Avineche a puffed up, ignorant... I will try to see if I can get her now that I have breezehome and come back to say how it went.````
EDIT: Confirmed! her refid did not exist till I got breezehome and now when I went inside and typed in prid a2d94 which worked, then enable then moveto player and bingo. I have my LYDIA back!! now where's that nocturnal robe at ? Thank you Aliana !! ````
- Glad it worked. You should definitely *always* disable *every* mod when you run into odd bugs, just to be sure. This particular bug has been reported on consoles as well though, and not just for Lydia (who's something of a special case anyway) but also Jordis and Iona. It must still work most of the time (and really, most of the game does, which is why "quit and reload an earlier save" is the answer to about 99% of the "weird" bugs people run into) but even if a mod isn't the direct cause of a bug it might make it happen more often, so it never hurts to try. Aliana 01:46, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
I just did this again with a new character (well, 16 hours in, but only level 2) playing like it was my first time: waiting for everyone to make their speeches, not running ahead of them to the watchtower, and so on, and when it was all over there she was waiting to accost me as I left Dragonsreach... I still have no solid idea what might be triggering the bug though (if it even is something you do rather than just bad luck) - I've done dozens of misc quests on this char while waiting for the patch/CK to come out, plus all the "to do immediately" ones on the Quest Timing page. The big differences I can think of are:
- Take Up Arms and Hired Muscle: done on my first char, then ignored on all the others because disease immunity didn't work and their quests bore me, then done again on this one. I really think this is unlikely though, unless maybe there's a "city rep" adjustment caused by joining them or something weird like that.
- Buying Breezehome right away: my first char didn't have anything like enough money at the time, the others did, and this one was 8 gold short (LOL) because I forgot to sell the dead guard gear on my way back. I thought I tried all the variations on this last time, but maybe I still bought it "too early". The reason I forgot to sell the gear was:
- The Alik'r that spawn at the gate after you kill Mirmulnir: first char listened to it all and took the quest, the rest just sprinted past them, this one sat through it while I thought about what quests to do next. I think this is a likely candidate in some ways, since it stupidly disables fast travel to Dragonsreach so that you "have to" meet them, but really unlikely in other ways.
I think those are the 4 things most likely to have had an impact on it, and the Companions one is a real stretch. Mostly I'm just hoping it's fixed in 1.4 and we never have to worry about it again. The only reason I finally did it even without the patch still is I'd run out of enchanted stuff to buy, so I made a hard save and figured it was worth spending 10 minutes on to see what happened. It's certainly not even close to definitive, but at least it's a few things people can try if they're desperate. Aliana 14:22, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- So in summary, for those who are running into this issue, if you want to get Lydia to spawn normally, then you need to purchase Breezehome and enter it before completing the Dragon Rising quest. — Unsigned comment by 75.156.194.162 (talk) at 23:38 on March 31, 2012
Dragon Rising will not startEdit
This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered. |
After I complete the quest Bleak Falls Barrow, no scout appears to inform the jarl about a dragon attack. No matter what I do, It refuses to let me initiate the quest. This is driving me insane.— Unsigned comment by Sumner12678 (talk • contribs) on 19 April 2012

Player 01:I have been having this problem as well and i have not turned in the claw yet. I do have the become high king of skyrim but i uninstalled it started a new game and it had no effect and this needs to be answered because it worked with all my mods i even uninstalled and reinstalled skyrim still nothing so i wonder what caused this because i need to play the story line again it was great and now i am screwed.
Do you have the mod "Not So Fast" enabled? If you followed the STEP guide, that is one of the mods it has you add, and it delays this quest. I've found this to be the cause for most people having this issue. 72.238.207.134 16:01, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Dragonborn DLC interfering with obtaining soul to advance quest?Edit
Killed Mirmulnir several times now, reloading after each time noticing this glitch, and actually turning the game off and back on the final attempt. Killed Mirmulnir once via kill-cam with an arrow, once via kill-cam via sword, and once with no kill-cam via sword. Each time, Mirmulnir dies, but does not give up its soul or disintegrate. All guards cower away from the dragon, hands over their heads, and quest marker stays on the dragon, but searching it, attacking it after it's dead, casting spells, etc. do nothing. Is this a possible new bug with the expansion? Never had this happen to me with Mirmulnir before the DLC came out. VycDarkshadow (talk) 01:16, 7 February 2013 (GMT)
- Tested this theory, turned Dragonborn off, reloaded my save, and quest proceeded as normal. Killed Mirmulnir (kill-cam via sword), it disintegrated, i obtained soul and Unrelenting Force shout. This does seem to be a bug associated with Dragonborn DLC. VycDarkshadow (talk) 01:23, 7 February 2013 (GMT)
- Other users have reported similar issues, one explained here and the other explained here. Both may be related to the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, one may be related to a mod called "Dragon Soul Absorb More Glorious" or something. - I do have the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, but i don't have that other mod you mentioned. - I just encounterd this bug. I had both dragonborn and "Dragon Soul Absorb More Glorious" active. Killed Mirmulnir 3 times and the quest stopped at the investigate stage. The dragon did not dissolve and I did not get a dragon soul. I turned off "Dragon Soul Absorb More Glorious" killed Mirmulnir again and got a soul, quest is now proceeding. I do not use the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, so I don't know if that has any effect on this or not but "Dragon Soul Absorb More Glorious" appears to.Bronze Knight 06:35, 7 February 2013

About fast travel to DragonsreachEdit
In 'Notes' section there stands:
- After defeating Mirmulnir, you will be unable to fast travel directly to Dragonsreach, as its map marker will be temporarily removed. The Whiterun city gates will still be available for fast travel, however. If you open the map quickly enough, however, you can still fast travel to Dragonsreach.
So. I've tested in few games (three times with different characters), and you can fast travel in Dragonsreach after the dragon is defeted, after you loot his corpse, but before the soul is completely absorbed and you get 'Report back to Jarl Balgruuf' assignment. However, when you fast travel to Dragonsreach, you will automatically get the 'Use your new Shout power' assignment. And you can actually manage to get into the castle and start dialogue with Balgruuf before the Greybeards call you. But they will still call Dragonborn during the dialogue. --Mr.Killjoy (talk) 02:43, 16 March 2013 (GMT)
Random dragonsEdit
The article claims that "random dragons will start appearing in Skyrim after completing this quest". I don't think this is true. I've slain Milmulnir, but didn't claim my reward from the jarl (I didn't wan't any random dragon encounters yet), so the quest wasn't completed. However, a random dragon appeared near Dawnstar. 157.181.166.225 15:44, 10 May 2013 (GMT)
- They are scripted to start appearing once Mirmulnir is dead, in case the layer skipped Balgruuf and went straight up the mountain. Article is reworded. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:21, 29 May 2013 (GMT)
Completing this quest is required...Edit
Completing this quest is required for a number of other, seemingly unrelated, side quests to begin.
I've played this game with dragons and without (by not completing Before the Storm) and I've noticed there are several quests that will not be available if you do not complete this one. I don't have a complete list, but I can confirm that In My Time of Need and Blood on the Ice* require you to finish this quest. Also, in Dragonborn, you won't be able to do any of the Black Books that reward powers related to shouts, as well as the main quest line, nor any of the Skaal Village quests (they are all busy building shrines or maintaining the magic barrier) including a New Source for Stalhrim. --RumblePen (talk) 01:47, 21 June 2013 (GMT)
Only walking?Edit
I got done killing the dragon and everything and i have to report back to the Jarl, but i'm stuck in walk mode, i'm playing on xbox and i thought that that was only an option on pc. interesting lootEdit
Some things I noticed after this fight:
-the dragon has a random number of scales, from 1-3, though always had 3 bones. Dragon may have a weapon, based on the class and level of the guard that it ate before the fight really started :)
-if you pickpocket the guard who starts the conversation about you being a dragonborn, he has an amulet of Talos on him that reduces shout wait time by 20%. useful item if you plan to use shouts a lot — Unsigned comment by 60.234.198.129 (talk) at 09:04 on 27 September 2013
- Thanks for the information, it is all noted on the appropriate articles already (dragon loot is on dragon article, etc.). :) — ABCface◥ 22:22, 27 September 2013 (GMT)
Mirmulnir's deathEdit
In the article, it says it's difficult to understand what Mirmulnir says when he dies "because it's in the dragon language", which is not true. I can listen perfectly that he says "Dovahkiin.. No!!" Also, I have always experienced that "bug" (never thought it was a bug, since I always had that) which causes to not be able to fast travel directly to Dragonreach because the marker simply dissappears from the map. One more thing. I have some mods installed and all, but I have found a bug I don't know where it comes from (I used the same mods for some time with many characters and never had that), but I simply can't finish Dragon Rising because Mirmulnir doesn't give up his soul. I stand there, waiting, and all that happens is that the guards flee and try to hide from the dragon. No soul, no FUS, no shouts.177.177.243.30 20:44, 22 October 2013 (GMT)
- Either you are seeing a really old version of the page, or you have misunderstood the notes. The note on it being difficult to miss is often true, as the music for killing a dragon and absorbing its soul starts almost immediately after this, combined with dialogue from the guards and a good likelihood of killing him while he is using a shout, does make it hard to hear a short phrase. The entry on the Dragonsreach map marker is not listed as a bug, it is a note, and wholly confirmed as deliberate. The "verification needed" tag is simply for the last bit about opening the map quick enough, and may be possible depending on when the script takes effect. Can't help on the no-soul issue, but something in the archives of the dragon talk page may be similar. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:25, 23 October 2013 (GMT)
Optional Objective BugEdit
Either due to a bug caused by a mod, or from simply playing a heavily modded installation, a PC player may not be able to complete the optional objective of using the dragon shout, no matter how many times the shout is used.
- Workaround: When opening up the console, a player encountering this problam may use the following setstage command(minus the brackets), [setstage mq104 100], to complete the optional objective and move forward.97.125.239.37 14:45, 29 May 2014 (GMT)
Different Jarl?Edit
Are there any differences in dialogue if Balgruuf got replaced during the Stomcloak civil war questline? If so, they're probably worth noting.
- It's actually impossible for Balgruuf to be replaced before Dragon Rising is complete, because he will hold on to Ulfric's axe until the business with dragons is resolved. As soon as you finish Dragon Rising, you'll be able to continue with the civil war questline.FrozenWolf150 (talk) 22:03, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
Why remove the bit about what he says as he dies?Edit
I came to this article specifically to see if it noted what he said when he died. I've never heard him say anything in past play throughs, but this time I did, and I was curious. I figured it out from the discussion page (I think, it seems he say 'Dovahkiin, no...' or similar? Which strikes me as a little sad, actually), but was just wondering why it was removed from the main article. Seems to me it'd fit well in the 'notes' section, I can't be the only one curious about what he says. Also, apologies if this has been hashed out before, feel free to just tell me to go look through an archive for myself if you like (if one exists), but my opinion about it being a relevant note still stands. - That's the thing, though, I never play with subtitles on, and I didn't have them on this time either. The reason I came to the article is that I heard him say something, but didn't know what it meant. Now I'm really confused...... I'm assuming that the fact that he didn't actually say anything is the reason it was removed, but I most definitely heard him speak. I didn't mention before, but I'm playing the remastered version on xbox one, so maybe they've put an audio file in there so that he says something now? Any other time I've done it, it's been on the original version on the 360, so maybe that's why this was the first time I ever heard him say something? Obax (talk) 23:35, 3 December 2016 (UTC)
- I see no edit in the history that has removed the dialogue from the page, the only relevant one is where it was moved from the notes to the bugs almost 2 years ago, where it has remained since. There is still an issue of whether he speaks, which I should be able to confirm soon myself if another user cannot get here first. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 01:00, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

- Ok, but I'm 100% certain he speaks. I just this second finished the battle again and he was speaking throughout the whole thing in the dragon language. Seemed like, every time he landed, he'd say something. Again, I didn't have subtitles on so no idea what he said. I definitely heard 'Dovahkiin' at least twice, not including when he died and said 'Dovahkiin, no...' I don't know why no one else hears this, but I swear on my mother's life, I heard him speak. And, just to confirm I'm not certifiably crazy, I reloaded and put on subtitles, and he's definitely saying stuff, as soon as he landed I heard him say something, then the subtitle popped right up, but it was in the dragon language. Second time he landed, it was a mix of english and dragon language, he said something about me being brave. Anyway, whether it belongs in the article or not is above my pay grade, but my original opinion stands that it'd be nice to have in the notes in case anyone is ever curious like me. Where does Mirmulnir come from?Edit
Is it possible to find him before he appears for the quest? — Unsigned comment by 24.142.71.4 (talk) on 16:56 UTC Feb 3, 2017
- He only spawns when you are at the tower, he will always come from the direction of Bleak Falls Barrow but spawns flying, so his theoretical home is unknown. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:43, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
ShortcutEdit
There is a shortcut for this quest which avoids waiting for Irileth to show up at the tower:
- After recieving the quest, leave Dragonsreach and fast travel to the stables
- Run to the tower and enter it
- As soon as you are on the slope to the tower, the quest will update and Irileth plus soldiers are teleported to the tower.
- Kill the dragon
- Done
(PC, all DLCs, USLEEP)
Learning shout without word wall.Edit
Apologies if I missed it, but didn;t see it mentioned. Might be worth adding, though I'm not sure where, that if you collected the Dragonstone from Bleak Falls barrow to unlock this quest, but didn't learn the word from the wall, that killing the dragon still gives the "use the menu to unlock unrelenting force" or whatever the wording is. The shout is then automatically added to your spellbook.
This leaves the Golden Claw quest uncompleted with "learn the secret of Bleak Falls Barrow" still to do.90.221.89.103 18:15, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
