Individual pages for buildings - can we do without?Edit

In its Morrowind namespace, the UESP does individual pages for buildings in a city. See e.g. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Fast_Eddie's_House

I'd argue that this is a level of detail that coverage of Morrowind mods shouldn't aspire to (not least because Anvil has easily 100+ separate buildings). This is partly due to the serially low numbers of editors who tend to document these mods and partly because (unlike Morrowind) the mods are still in constant development. Interiors get revamped between releases, and some changes are so minor that they're not logged in the changelog (a silver weapon gets changed out for a mithril one, somebody decides that X bakery is one bakery too many and whacks it, etc.). Even assuming that there are going to be enough editors to keep those building pages updated, they might not even notice when said buildings get replaced, and a wrong page is arguably less useful to a user than no page. It's for a similar reason that I don't dare list NPC gear/wares on NPC pages for PT/TR.

Tamriel Rebuilt did start out trying to document each building in their Map 1 release, with Firewatch. Ten years later, Firewatch got completely redone, and those pages are now defunct. It'd be good to agree now (at least, if there is agreement) that individual pages for city buildings like, e.g. Anvil Guild of Mages, are a level of detail beyond our manpower's ability to handle before any are made.

If that sounds okay, I will go through the current PT pages and do some delinking. - Jinks (talk) 23:02, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

A little forewarning, I'm pretty tired so I don't know how comprehensible this will be. But anyways...
I disagree; I think important locations like guildhalls, taverns, stores, etc. should definitely get their own pages. They don't have to be the most detailed of pages, but there should be something that lists the specific services they offer just so players aren't left to wonder where they can find X item/spell or where exactly the Y service listed on the town page is actually located. For homes, I was planning on setting them up something like Morrowind:Balmora Homes; a short one or two sentence description along with any inhabitants and notable loot and that's it.
As for updating, I have a sandbox where I'm tracking place pages; it's just dungeon places right now, but I'm planning to set up my settlements sandboxes in a similar fashion and also create a buildings sandbox to track buildings inside settlements. Most of the time updates to existing locations are relatively minor; most of the pre-AS PC place pages were updated to include and changes from AS within a week or two after the release. Even in the case of major updates (like Stirk → Charach), updating these pages is no more work than documenting any of the newly added cities or towns; often it's easier since the foundations of the page are already present (or at least I found that to be the case in the SHotN namespace).
I agree we have few editors than are ideal, but I don't think that's a reason to sacrifice quality. Just prioritize the more important stuff and deal with the less important stuff once that's done. I have been thinking about/trying to recruit people from the PT discord. I noticed there are a handful of non-dev people over there that are pretty knowledgeable about PTR; I think they'd make great editors if they could be convinced to join. I haven't spent much time on the TR discord, but I'd imagine there are similar people there, too.
Sorry if that was a bit rambly. If there's anything you'd like me to clarify or elaborate on, leave a reply and I'll get back to you when I wake up. — Ohnoitsmangofett (talk) 00:05, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
Fair enough. I thought I'd raise the matter in case the building links were something being added simply as it's how it's always been done for coverage of the vanilla game, but it sounds like there was a plan for them. I'll leave them be then. - Jinks (talk) 11:17, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

SplitEdit

If there aren't any objections, I'd like to split Anvil's quarters off as their own pages, similar to the Vivec's canton pages (the St. Delyn's page for reference). — Ohnoitsmangofett (talk) 22:25, 31 January 2025 (UTC)

Works by me! I was thinking Fort Telodrach definitely needs its own page, and it does make sense for the others to get them too. - Jinks (talk) 23:23, 31 January 2025 (UTC)
