Time to Update Format?Edit

Now that information can be added to the wiki, I think it is necessary to update the format of this page to the standard layout such as is found for the other games. As it is, information is very difficult to find. Thats's all! — Unsigned comment by Leajiaure (talkcontribs) at 20:07 on February 18, 2014‎

Typically, we wait till a game is released before changing the page to match the format (the page is already made and needs this one moving before that moving over the top to preserve edit histories which - I think - needs an admin) . Though with half the game released publicly beforehand i'd support a change over now rather than later, since it's mostly semi-solid fact rather than guess work. I'm sure someone else will chime in soon... --Kiz(email - talk) 20:11, 18 February 2014 (GMT)
Just to chime in, its far too soon to switch over. While its true many pages will be almost complete by the time of release at this rate, we barely have any place, quests, NPC, or item pages up. The only section with good info is the books and notes, and thats because its hard data. The game is still in beta and we shouldn't even think of switching over to have a page either full of redlinks or half-complete. Our duty at this stage is still to present the best page as our main, and that for some while yet will be the current page with its explanations of what the game is and how it differs from previous installations, not a list of clicks. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 20:17, 18 February 2014 (GMT)
I would like to help add to the racial names list with the ESO characters. What is the best way to proceed? Do I simply create a new section for Elder Scrolls Online on the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dunmer_Names page, for example, and start adding names of the NPCs I've encountered? Or is someone already working on this? IcyDeadPeople (talk) 18:06, 27 February 2014 (GMT)
Do not add any names that are not confirmed to appear and their race is confirmed. This basically means that we can't add any names as only a handful of NPCs will have roles too big to drop them, such as Abnur Tharn. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:50, 27 February 2014 (GMT)
I don't think that's the best course of action. The game is going to continue growing, not shrinking. Most if not all of the NPCs in the game have had the same race and name for many beta periods without change, and it's not likely for them to change in the future. If they were to, though, it would be worthwhile to list their old name/race on the new page, for both the sake of completeness and to show how the NPC has developed (or been replaced). ESO is unique because through the beta periods we can view the development process of the game instead of just the final product. I personally doubt there will be any major changes to list, but if there are, they would be worth mentioning regardless. Because of that, we should record what we have now, and keep track of changes if there are any. • JAT 01:14, 28 February 2014 (GMT)
We should add as much content as we can for now, using the "This Online article is based on prerelease information" tag. The game is less than a month away and UESP is already behind other sites in adding information about the game. It seems to me that at this point, 90% of the game is probably solid and the last 10% may change. If we add as much as we can now, we can change that 10% later. -Thunderforge (talk) 05:04, 3 March 2014 (GMT)

() I discovered that we apparently are already on the new format, but on a separate page: Online:Main Page. The plan is apparently to keep the current page as it is, then when ESO is released (probably counted as March 30th, given that it is released to preorders then), we put the contents of that page on Online:Online and move the contents of that page to Online:About. This does seem a bit odd, given the fact that it has been "released" in beta form early, but that seems to be what the Illuminati of the site wants :-) In the mean time, you can add whatever information about Online you want to the wiki, much of which is linked at Online:Main Page already. Also, even though you can't play the game at the moment, there is plenty of YouTube footage and blog posts from people that can be an excellent resource. -Thunderforge (talk) 16:21, 3 March 2014 (GMT)

Can someone PLEASE make the "See Main Page for an overview of the data gathered from the beta so far." text A LOT more visible? e.g. put it in a fancy box or something? I've never seen it before today, and I know my way round the wiki fairly well! A casual user probably wouldn't notice it at all. baratron (talk) 02:28, 10 March 2014 (GMT)
It was added March 3rd and then put in a bright yellow box March 10th - if you're logged out you get old pages served to you. We just follow what has been done before, since information is sketchy compared to what we're used too (two bots running around and a database we can use to fact check). --Kiz(email - talk) 20:04, 11 March 2014 (GMT)

How can I help?Edit

Let me know what would be the best way for me to help. Should I add a new ESO section on http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dunmer_Names for example? Or should I enter this information somewhere else, make separate pages for each NPC? I can already confirm the names and races of hundreds of NPCs as the NDA was lifted for PTS, at least for level 1-17 areas I believe. I'd like to help out, as a more complete set of racial names pages will be very helpful for new players coming up with lore-friendly names IcyDeadPeople (talk) 22:20, 10 March 2014 (GMT)

There was a brief discussion about whether or not to start adding names, and I think we decided to go ahead and add them to the Online namespace, but not the list of Lore names. You could start creating articles for each NPC in the game. The more info you can add the better, but if nothing else just a brief description of who and where they are should suffice for now. • JAT 23:29, 13 March 2014 (GMT)
What would be the preferred way to add info on item sets? I've found three crafting stations so far in Stonefalls that allow for craftable items. So far I'm thinking that adding them to the main items page might be best as the sets can be comprised of both armor and weapons. — Unsigned comment by Nmrahde (talkcontribs) at 15:22 on 17 April 2014 (GMT)

Search Box drop down listEdit

It may be a good time to get Online: added to the set of namespaces that are known in the search box drop down list. --Swordmage (talk) 07:13, 23 March 2014 (GMT)

It already is... I believe the metric goes by most page views for a given name. It won't pop up for the more common search terms for a month or so. Jeancey (talk) 07:21, 23 March 2014 (GMT)

Age Restriction?Edit

I am under 17 but will I still be able to play when the early access starts? — Unsigned comment by 98.227.11.214 (talk) at 03:26 on 29 March 2014 (GMT)

If you set up your account correctly, yes. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 03:26, 29 March 2014 (GMT)
What do you mean by correctly? I put my actual age in there and my parents bought me the game already... — Unsigned comment by 98.227.11.214 (talk) at 03:50 on 29 March 2014 (GMT)
While most underaged people just put a higher age in while setting up a profile, the ESRB rating is not legally binding. I do not see any claim that they will specifically forbid you from playing if you are underaged. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 03:50, 29 March 2014 (GMT)
They refused to invite underage participants to the beta. —Legoless (talk) 16:05, 29 March 2014 (GMT)

() TOS:By using any ZeniMax Services, You affirm that (i) You are at least 18 years of age (or have reached the age of majority if that is not 18 years of age where You live) OR You have reviewed this Agreement with Your parent or guardian and he or she assents to these Terms of Service on Your behalf and takes full responsibility...

A support answer quotes ESRB rating, which of course doesn't really answer the question. Let's see if the feedback that the answer isn't that helpful will do anything. --Alfwyn (talk) 17:00, 29 March 2014 (GMT)

Actually that answer IS helpful. Their parents bought them the game, therefore have provided consent. Thus, it follows the TOS. They should be fine. Jeancey (talk) 17:10, 29 March 2014 (GMT)
Cool, thanks! can't wait for tomorrow! — Unsigned comment by 98.227.11.214 (talk) at 17:19 on 29 March 2014

Move?Edit

We need to move this page soon, if not now. Everyone think it's ready to become the new front page for the namespace? --AKB Talk Cont Mail 04:55, 30 March 2014 (GMT)

Yeah, this move can happen now. Jeancey (talk) 04:56, 30 March 2014 (GMT)
Make the change, bossman. I think we're good to go. -damon  talkcontribs 05:00, 30 March 2014 (GMT)

Random questionEdit

it's ESO a spinoff of the main series, or a prequel to the series? — Unsigned comment by 99.197.197.242 (talk) at 01:45 on 21 April 2014

All the games are part of the same series as each one has the same legitimacy in lore. ESO takes place before the numbered main part of the series but it is not a prequel as such. In loose terms its a spin-off, but not in a way that should make it appear a lesser cousin to the single-player games. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 02:41, 21 April 2014 (GMT)
Thanks! I know it will be just as cool as the rest of the series. I cant wait to get it!~ — Unsigned comment by Kzljr1 (talkcontribs) at 01:41 on 17 May 2014 (GMT)

explorationEdit

What does the exploration trait do? I know it increases exploration exp but what is that classified as finding places, completing quests or something else.— Unsigned comment by 69.14.13.111 (talk) at 19:25 on 01 June 2014

Exploration XP comes from discovering new map locations (and only until you hit Veteran rank). Quest completion and creature kills don't count toward it. - ND. — Unsigned comment by 174.4.166.247 (talk) at 01:31 on 21 September 2014

Can PC & Mac be renamed to Windows & Mac?Edit

I'm annoyed by this, PC doesn't mean Windows, and Macs are also PCs.

For example, this game isn't available on Linux, BSD, other Unix systems or DOS, which are also PC operating systems, so I suggest that "PC" is replaced with "Windows".

It's a rather simply edit but the page is protected and I can't edit it.

Either call it just "PC", or "Windows & Mac", because calling it "PC & Mac" you're just implying that Windows is the only personal computer OS

Thanks --Killeri404 (talk) 13:01, 19 September 2014 (GMT)

I don't really think that's necessary. While it might not be technically correct, it's generally understood that PC means Windows, Mac means mac, and other OS are given other names like Linux. It's like ATM machine (Automatic Teller Machine Machine), it isn't technically correct but it's become part of our language and is understood. Also, if we were to change it, it would have to be changed on all pages that mention it, not just this one --AN|L (talk) 14:51, 19 September 2014 (GMT)
It's something that's always annoyed me as well. PC only ever really means Windows, and I believe there's history to that reasoning, but it can be argued as not technically accurate. However, since ZOS refer to them as PC and Mac, that's what we should do as well. --Enodoc (talk) 22:41, 19 September 2014 (GMT)

TES LoreEdit

Since this game is developed by a different company, how does that affect the lore? Did Bethesda have a hand in how all that was done, or did Zenimax have the liberty to do what they want? If they did have free reign, doesn't that mean that TESO isn't a good basis for the universe's lore? Gnasty Gro-Gnorc 21:56, 24 September 2014

From what i understand Bethesda helped them craft the lore for the game and pretty much said yes or no on what they could add to the game. If Bethesda decides to keep it as lore or not we all will just have to wait and see. So i think it's a good basis for "universe's lore". Lorenut (talk) 22:03, 24 September 2014 (GMT)
Ah, I see. Thank you for that. Gnasty Gro-Gnorc 22:09, 24 September 2014
The game is official in every manner possible in lore. The game is not made by a different company, they are all subsidiaries of ZeniMax Media (who own the copyrights), including Bethesda. The people in charge of lore at Bethesda worked with ZeniMax Online during development and signed off on anything about lore. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:13, 24 September 2014 (GMT)
Right. Sorry about that. Feel free to delete this section if you want. I doubt it will serve much purpose. Gnasty Gro-Gnorc 22:15, 24 September 2014
You're welcome. Glad i could help! Lorenut (talk) 00:31, 25 September 2014 (GMT)

late to party but its one of those the lore is getting better in newer expansions but anything morrowind and earlier has clear issues in the established TES lore. events that are meant to cooincide, faction wars, racisms, development of certain materials, etc. the list goes on when we look too close at the vanilla/early expanions. but if we consider it a loose spiritual spin off of TES and not a true telling of the lore its not too bad. again later expansions have relaized their errors and flow in the lore more smoothly.

Boss levels?Edit

Being that ESO has vet levels as well as normal levels, how are we listing the bosses levels? Are we only listing what they would be for 1-50 or 1-50 and then vets? Similar to how we do rewards. Lorenut (talk) 17:18, 9 November 2014 (GMT)

We've only been listing the regular variants. Maybe in the future we can implement hovertext for the two veteran versions. —Legoless (talk) 18:23, 9 November 2014 (GMT)

FormIDsEdit

Does this game use formIDs like Oblivion and Skyrim? Can you use the console? FokkerTISM (talk) 13:25, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

FormIDs no, not in the same way. Most things have IDs of some sort, but not many of them are useful; ItemIDs are the most useful, with SkillIDs coming in second. Some add-ons may make use of other IDs, but there's not much you can do with them. There is no console, but you do have limited access to API functions for modding the UI using Lua (see ESOUI), and you can input these functions directly into the chat box if you know how to use them. Due to it being a persistent online game, standard Oblivion/Skyrim console commands like tcl, tai, additem, placeatme, resurrect, etc are not available, as they could give players an unfair advantage over each other. (Circumventing the restrictions and gaining access to such commands would theoretically result in your account being permanently banned, but it's quite likely that they don't even exist in the live release of the game.) Hope that helps! --Enodoc (talk) 13:59, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Formatting errorEdit

The "addons" sub-section under the "Technical Information" section is indented too far. It gives the impression that it's part of the Linux sub-section.

TranslationEdit

  • The cover features text written in the Ehlnofex stylized as Daedric Alphabet. It reads:
    • "AH LORMANTIA MOLAG BAL HIE GHARTOK HOOM ALTADOON VA NIRN", which roughly translates to "With dark anchors, Molag Bal brings low his hand upon Nirn".

I have removed the above note from the page. The source given is this reddit post, which appears to be a speculative fan translation. I'm not opposed to inclusion of the untranslated text converted from Daedric, but we cannot claim to know the translation, nor can we claim that this is the "Ehlnofex language" (the supposed existence of which is currently unsourced on its own article). —Legoless (talk) 15:05, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
