The Boatmaster is the ghost of a Dunmer, bound to serve the students of Shad Astula. He provides transport between Mournhold and Shad Astula once you obtain the necessary invitation.

Prior to starting the quest, he'll tell you:

He will emphasize that to get passage to Shad Astula, you need to have an invitation:

- I'll bet you have a spare invitation to the school.

Either way, he'll respond with:

Asking to be ferried to Shad Astula after gaining access to the school:
- "I exist to serve. I can ferry you to Shad Astula whenever you are ready."
