DialogueEdit

Speaking to Emile in the Fighters Guild hall:

"I don't have anything to say to you or anyone else. Please, go."
Emile, I'm here to talk about Haladan's murder. Did you really kill him?
"Yes."
Vivienne believes you're innocent. She says you would never kill anyone.
"She's wrong."
I've decided to investigate Haladan's murder. You need to tell me what happened.
"What? No, no! They already did an investigation. I murdered Haladan. It was me. Why are you inserting yourself into matters that don't concern you?
I murdered a Sapiarch. I accept responsibility and my punishment. Go away. I don't want your help!"

After returning from Saltbreeze Cave:

"You again? I told you, I don't want to talk about this. I'm guilty!"
I met Norasea, Emile.
"What? No—no, you're mistaken."
She told me what happened. Her infected companion killed Haladan.
"No, no, no. You can't believe her. She's um … she's lying. I attacked Haladan. I killed him! You're making this up! No one will believe it!"
I know you infected Norasea with vampirism. I have Haladan's notes.
"No! Please, you must burn those notes! If the Sapiarchs learn what Haladan and I did, he'll be ruined. Disgraced! All his work will be for nothing!
And Norasea … Mara save me. Poor Norasea. They'll kill her. Please, you must keep this a secret!"
I need to think about this.

Once you've discussed the issue with Calawende and Vivienne, you can give Emile your verdict:

"There's nothing to consider. Even if I didn't kill Haladan, the vampirism was my idea! He never would have agreed to it if I hadn't pushed him!
Haladan meant more to me than you'll ever know. His memory is all I have left. Don't ruin it. Please."
Justice has to be served. I'm going to tell the Sapiarchs the truth. You're going free.
"Curse you! Do you think I want freedom? I want Norasea to be safe. I want Haladan to be remembered. I want his sacrifice to mean something! How can you take that away from me?
I—I need to sit down."
This is for the best.
I'll respect your wishes. I won't share what I found with the Sapiarchs.
"Mara bless you! Losing Haladan was awful. I still see his bloody face with my waking eyes. The only thing keeping me sane is the knowledge that I might spare his reputation and the friend he dearly loved.
Thank you for this kindness."
I hope you find peace.

If you try to speak to him one last time after deciding telling the truth:

"Don't talk to me. Just don't. You had no right to insert yourself into this affair—no right to slander my beloved and undo all we struggled and sacrificed to accomplish.
I will never forgive you for this. Never. Now, go."

If you try to speak with him after deciding to keep the secret:

"Thank you once again. Haladan was the wisest, kindest, most beautiful soul I've ever known. I don't know if I'll ever fully recover from this, but the knowledge that his memory lives on sets my mind at ease."
