Smuggle this illegal drug

Quick WalkthroughEdit

  1. Talk to a Merchant or an Innkeeper.
  2. Travel to the town mentioned by your employer.
  3. Deliver the goods to your contact within the time limit for your reward, or:
  4. Possibly receive a letter.
  5. If you received the letter, travel to the new town.
  6. Find and meet your new contact in a tavern.
  7. Give the new contact the contraband within the time limit.

Detailed WalkthroughEdit

The meeting place is in an otherwise ordinary-looking house

Your contact prefers to keep out of the light when making illicit deals

Sometimes it's a trap laid by the ruler's knight

Your mysterious benefactor is laying low at an inn

Deliver the goods and the kind stranger will cover for you

A Bootlegging OpportunityEdit

Speak to a merchant or innkeeper, who says:

"You wouldn't have any problem doing a bit of smuggling for me, would you, (player's first name)? There's a possibility of risk, but a certainty of profit for both of us. Your share would be (random gold) gold pieces. What do you say?"

or

"Smuggling is a nasty word, isn't it? I prefer to say I need some legally ambiguous stuff brought to a place where some elements will welcome it, and others, the law specifically, will not. Interested?"

AcceptEdit

The merchant or innkeeper goes on:

"Grand. Here's the scheme, (player's first name). I have a little side business exporting (contraband) to (town), but my regular agents are being watched by the (ruler's title)'s guard. If you can get the (contraband) into (town) to a place called (contact's building), my client (contact's name) will give you the (random gold) gold pieces I mentioned. Don't talk to any lawmen while you have the (contraband) and don't fail to get to (contact's building) in (time limit) days, or I'll make it my life business to destroy your reputation with the government, the underworld, and anyone else I can think of. But I'm sure you won't fail me. Good luck, my child. Make (employer's name) proud."

DeclineEdit

The merchant or innkeeper answers:

"We never met then. Remember that, (player's first name)."

or

"In that case, I will deny ever meeting you."

Running the GoodsEdit

As soon as you accept the quest, your regional reputation will drop dramatically, by 100 points to be precise. There are two paths the quest can take:

The normal path is very straightforward; just head to the town and find the contact mentioned by your employer. Ask around for the location of the residence your employer named and enter it. Be prepared to pick the lock or cast an Open spell if the door is locked. Find and speak to the contact within to deliver the contraband. You will get your reward and your regional reputation will be restored.

The quest will not always run this smoothly, however. Sometimes, the meeting will be a trap; up to about seven hours after accepting the quest, you will receive a notification:

A letter has been slipped into your hands.

Check your inventory for the letter and read it:

"Dear (player's name),
You have been set up. (Contact's name)
is not at (residence). A knight
named (knight's name) is waiting there
to ambush you. If you want to get rid of
that (contraband), bring it to me
at (tavern) here in
(second town).
(Second contact's name)

The letter's claims are true, and entering the residence in this scenario becomes entirely optional. If you do decide to go inside, your contact will not be there; instead you will encounter an agent of the region's ruler, the knight mentioned in the letter. The knight will immediately attack you, and upon being hit will say:

"Wait a minute, kid. We don't want you. Just (employer's name) and the (contraband). Hand it over and you can get out of here, okay?"

or

"Listen, kid, nothing personal. Just gimme the (contraband) and I'll tell my boss you got away. Deal?"

If you hand over the goods, the knight will stop attacking you and say:

"Yer a smart kid. Now, get outta here."

Of course, if you hand over the contraband you cannot deliver it. Thus, you cannot complete the quest and your lost reputation will not be restored. However, if you have handed it over you can then attack and kill the knight, retrieve the item from the corpse, and proceed with the quest.

If you don't hand it over, fight or escape from the knight and make your way to the town mentioned in the letter. Find the tavern mentioned in the letter, head inside, and meet the new contact to get rid of the contraband and complete the quest.

RewardEdit

If the quest proceeds normally, when you deliver the contraband your contact says:

"Jolly nerve-wracking sitting here, waiting for you, (player's first name). Ah, the (contraband). Good quality this. Here, here's the (random gold) gold pieces. Good doing business with you and (employer's name)."

If you were set up and deliver the contraband to the second contact, you will hear:

"Ah, you received my letter. Good thing for you. There was a nasty situation brewing and I'd hate to have you caught up in it. I'll take that (contraband) in return for my services clearing up your involvement in this botched smuggling scheme. No need to thank me."

In the above cases, your regional reputation will increase by 100 points after you make the delivery. Giving the contraband to either contact is the only way to acquire this reputation gain. Alternatively, if the time limit runs out before you make the delivery to either party, a message pops up:

(Employer's name) isn't going to be happy about you holding on to the (contraband), but it's too late to deliver it anywhere. You might be able to sell it somewhere ...

Reputation Gain/LossEdit

A successfully completed quest results in a reputation gain according to the table below.

Faction/Person Reputation Gain
Questgiver's faction +5
Questgiver's associated factions +2

A failed quest (time limit expired) results in a reputation loss according to the table below.

Faction/Person Reputation Gain
Questgiver's faction -2
Questgiver's associated factions -1

If the smuggling operation was a set up, you will always lose reputation according to the table above. In addition, if you do not deliver the drugs, your loss of regional reputation will be irreversible.

EnemiesEdit

  • One Knight at the first contact location if it was a set up

NotesEdit

  • The type of drug is randomly chosen, and can be Sursum, Drothweed, Thyrwort, Moonseed, Nux Vomica, Arsenic, Somnalius, Phyrric Acid, Magebane, Indulcet,, or Quaesto Vil. They all have different effects and values.
  • If the smuggling operation was a set up, you will lose two reputation with your employer's faction even if you deliver the contraband successfully. This cannot be avoided.
  • If you keep the drug, it will remain in your inventory and won't vanish once the quest is over, unlike most quest items.
  • You can use this quest to nullify your negative regional reputation.
    • Reputation cannot fall below -100; if you are already in the negative, accepting this quest will only take you down to this minimum. However, you will still gain 100 reputation for delivering the goods. Thus, if you begin the quest with any negative reputation, it will drop to -100 and return to zero upon a successful quest outcome.

Additional DialogueEdit

If you fail the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "The (contraband) smuggling between (employer's town) and (contact's town) is a (region) disgrace."
  • "The (ruler's title) has vowed to do something about the (contraband) smuggling spree."

If you successfully complete the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "They'll never be able to end the (contraband) smuggling in (region). Too much demand.
  • "(Ruler's title) (ruler's name) has appointed (employer's name) special enforcer in the war against smuggling."

If you successfully complete the quest, the quest giver may later greet you with:

  • "(Contact's name) tells me you arrived just fine. For that, I thank you."

If you failed the quest, the quest giver will greet you with:

  • "Maybe you betrayed me, maybe you're just a bad smuggler. Either way, sod off."
