Detailed WalkthroughEdit

The UpstartsEdit

Speak to a Dark Slayer, who says:

"There is another assassination group budding in (region), which must be crushed before it can bloom. I want you to move in, account the assassin, and then the man or woman who ordered the assassination. You do have time for this endeavor, yes?"

or

"The Dark Brotherhood has been the sole assassin's guild in Tamriel since the Second Era. We intend to keep that monopoly. There is a freelance assassin who has been flaunting us for some time, but (assassin's name)'s luck has ended. I want you to teach (him/her) a permanent lesson, and then repeat the lesson for (his/her) foolish employer.

AcceptEdit

The Dark Slayer goes on:

"Good. Now then, we know that the assassin, (assassin's name), has pursued (his/her) quarry to a dungeon called (dungeon). If you have not found any clues to the employer's wherebouts [sic], return here. I would, of course, prefer for you to account (assassin's name) and (his/her) employer both, but I'd be reasonably satisfied with merely the freelancer's death. Take no longer than (time limit) days for both accountings.

DeclineEdit

The Dark Slayer answers:

"No? How strange and troubling."

Retiring the CompetitionEdit

The assassin's employer brought some backup

Travel to the dungeon and enter it. Track down and kill the assassin. There may be multiple enemies of this type within, but you must slay the target for the quest to count as a success. When the assassin dies, a notification appears:

You have slain (assassin's name). The Brotherhood will be pleased.

Search the assassin's corpse, and you will find a note which reads:

After slaying (random name),
go to (employer's dungeon) in
the wilderness of (region)
for your reward.
-- (Employer's name)

To locate the assassin's employer, travel to the dungeon mentioned in the note and enter it. Find and kill the employer, a knight, within. Again, there may be multiple enemies of this type in the dungeon, but only one is the quest target. When the employer dies, you receive a notification:

(Employer's name) has joined (his/her) employee. The Brotherhood will be pleased.

Report back to the guildhall to complete the quest.

RewardEdit

If you killed the assassin but not the employer, the Dark Slayer will say:

"We would have preferred it if you had accounted (assassin's name)'s boss as well. But it's enough to know that (assassin's name) can no longer be counted as part of the competition."

If you killed them both, the Dark Slayer will be more pleased:

"Excellent, (player's guild title). We would have been happy with just the termination of (assassin's name), but now the acquaintances of (employer's name) will know that the Dark Brotherhood does not take well to amateur competition."

Reputation Gain/LossEdit

If you did not kill both the assassin and the employer, the quest will count as a failure once the time limit has expired.

A successfully completed quest results in a reputation gain according to the table below.

Faction/Person Reputation Gain
Dark Brotherhood +5
Dark Slayers +5
Associated factions +2

A failed quest results in a reputation loss according to the table below.

Faction/Person Reputation Gain
Dark Brotherhood -2
Dark Slayers -2
Associated factions -1

(Allies/Enemies affiliations for listed factions are not considered in the tables)

EnemiesEdit

NotesEdit

  • Like most other quests for the Dark Brotherhood, there is no specific reward beyond the loot found during the dungeon crawl.

Additional DialogueEdit

After you have accepted this quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "That (assassin's name) has been a freelance assassin in (region) for years now."
  • "(Assassin's name) isn't the best in the business, but (he/she) has a lot of enthusiasm."

If you fail the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "(Assassin's name) just proves you can work outside of the Brotherhood."
  • "Apparently the Brotherhood can't stop all the freelancers in Tamriel."

If you successfully complete the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "(Employer's name) thought (he/she) could save a few gold pieces by hiring (assassin's name) ... idiot."
  • "It just doesn't pay to use assassins other than the Brotherhood, ask (employer's name)."

If you successfully complete the quest, the quest giver may later greet you with:

  • "And how are you, slayer of the rogue Assassin?"

If you failed the quest, the quest giver will greet you with:

  • "You're that worthless thug who can't account a bumbling freelancer like (assassin's name). Why should I waste my breath on you?"
