Hello!Edit

Hello Xyzzy! Welcome to UESPWiki. It's always good to have new members. If you would like to help improve any of our pages, you may want to take a look at the following links:

If you, on the other hand, would like to spice up your userpage, take a look at this link:

  • Userboxes: near complete list of userboxes, including a guide to make your own

When you're editing, it's always a good idea to leave edit summaries to explain the changes you have made to a particular page, and remember to sign your talk page posts with four tildes ~~~~. Also, the "show preview" button is a great way to view the changes you've made so far without actually saving the page (our patrollers really appreciate it!).

Feel free to practice editing in the sandbox or discuss the games in the forums. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact one of our mentors. Have fun! --AKB Talk Cont Mail 17:55, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Have you been active on any other wikis in the past? I used to be quite active on a wiki that had a user named Xyzzy as the equivalent of a patroller. ThuumofReason 14:34, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
No. I have used other wikis in the past, but this is the first one that I have contributed to. It's nice to see that I'm not the only old guy who remembers that magic word.--Xyzzy 19:15, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Thank you!Edit

You have been given a gold star!

I see your name all over the Recent Changes these days. You've been making really helpful edits, and it's definitely appreciated :). This gold star is for being awesome--keep up the good work! eshetalk 16:07, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Wow! It feels great to be appreciated. Thank you. --Xyzzy 16:27, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Image CleanupEdit

Just a request - when you upload a new image to fix something that has a CleanImage tag on it, you should remove the tag when you're done to avoid confusion for other users who might see the page later. Thanks. --TheRealLurlock Talk 04:10, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Ok, no problem. I guess I figured the user who placed the tag would want to make that call. I'll do it from now on. --Xyzzy 04:21, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh, don't worry, someone will see it (probably me at least - I patrol the upload log daily), and if they disagree they can put the tag back on. Yours have been pretty good so far though, so it saves me the extra step of removing the tags myself. --TheRealLurlock Talk 05:49, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

TrapsEdit

I see you've uploaded a lot of images for the traps. Could you get some images of the different symbols for the Dragon Door puzzles, eg Bear, Dragon, Fox, etc. Thanks. The Silencer has spokenTalk 21:17, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Sure thing. Would you like them linked to a page, or just uploaded? --Xyzzy 00:01, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Just uploaded for now. I think the best thing might be a subpage for the pictures because they might clog up the puzzle section, but thought needs inputted into that decision. The Silencer has spokenTalk 00:09, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Actually, link them to my sandbox please. The Silencer has spokenTalk 00:11, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Will do. --Xyzzy 02:41, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Whenever you upload images, it's best to upload the new image over the old image. Not only does it retain the history (since the old one will most likely be deleted), it updates the images on the wiki wherever they are. It's also more work for other users as well. If you want to correct the name of an image, add the {{rename}} tag. A patroller or admin will fix it. Thanks. elliot (talk) 04:38, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

() So, just to be sure I'm clear, you want to move File:SR-trap-Propeller.jpg to File:SR-trap-Spinning Blades.jpg, then re-upload the new image over the old one. Is that right? eshetalk 13:50, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that is correct. --Xyzzy 13:53, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Okay, it's done! Upload at will ;). eshetalk 13:59, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. Sorry for the confusion. I like to do things bass-ackward. --Xyzzy 14:00, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Not a problem! It happens. Nothing a little file shuffling won't fix ;). I just wanted to make sure I wasn't ruining some master plan before I went ahead and moved the thing. eshetalk 14:03, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
There is a book (Notes on Yngol Barrow) that says it's in Yngol Barrow, and another for Ansilvund, both without a hawk symbol. Might it only exist on the rotating symbols rather than the dragon claw doors, and to really be annoying, they might provide clearer pictures, for example the whale one that was already on the traps page. The Silencer has spokenTalk 07:21, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
All "totems" are listed in the book The Dragon War. The Silencer has spokenTalk 07:40, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

() Not sure if you saw my reply in the sandbox, so am posting it here to be sure. I added the whale picture beside the one in the sandbox for you to see the difference. The symbols are much larger, but I am not sure if all symbols exist on both the Dragon Claw Doors and the Rune Stones The Silencer has spokenTalk 17:30, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

OK. I'll get images of the rotating Rune Stones tonight. --Xyzzy 18:58, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Found a new activator. In Calcelmo's Lab through the Dwemer Museum in Understone Keep, (Hard Answers quest), there are big red Valves that activate multiple types of traps. The Silencer has spokenTalk 20:04, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Greeting IP usersEdit

This is the second time you've sent the welcome message to an anonymous user of the site. Generally we don't do this, because they may not stay for a while, and IP addresses can change. There are messages if you want a generic message for friendly advice, and on occasion people leave a message that asks if the person has considered joining the wiki, but it's an unwritten rule that anonymous users are not officially welcomed to the wiki. Vely►Talk►Email 18:52, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Understood. I don't generally do that, but this user was making several changes with no summary. I couldn't find a specific message for that, so I just used the generic welcome message that included the request to include a summary. Maybe a new template message for that would be helpful? --Xyzzy 20:18, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
A new message for that wouldn't hurt; you could suggest it on the talk page. What I do in situations like that is take one of those messages and reword it a bit, or write my own message (always with link to site policies and a thanks for interest in contributing). Generally you'll notice that a lot of IP users don't include an edit summary, so I think that unless they make a ton of edits or large edits, they shouldn't get such a message. However, some newer account users do the same, so it could come in handy there. Vely►Talk►Email 20:56, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Requested PageEdit

You have probably forgotten by now, but you requested a page for the Strategic Maps found near Jarls. Could you upload a picture and name it as Civil War Map, and I'll see if I can do anything with it. (New trap request above) The Silencer has spokenTalk 19:59, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Will do. Thanks. --Xyzzy 20:16, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
Done. I named it File:SR-item-Civil_War_Map.jpg. --Xyzzy 03:30, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Took all day to think of where to put it. But now it is in use. I don't know about a seperate page for it, although a list of everywhere it shows and adds map markers may be useful. The Silencer has spokenTalk 22:19, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

() Newish picture please. Understone Keep, head towards Calcelmo and as you exit the tunnel, the entrance to Nchuand-Zel. A fairly impressive place. The Silencer has spokenTalk 02:50, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

SRQRPEdit

Hey Xyzzy. Sorry, but it is not necessary to add authors to the pages I skipped – if I don’t add an author it means that the page is incomplete and needs more work, according to the SRQRP guidelines. Right now, adding authors is a one-man project, simply to keep the category under control. :) --Krusty 13:58, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Sorry. I didn't realize you wanted to do that yourself. --Xyzzy 14:35, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

UESPWiki:Image RequestsEdit

Hey, Xyzzy! I just thought I would point out the new Image Requests page which was discussed on the CP here. Since you take awesome images, have taken specific image requests in the past, and took part in the related discussion, it seemed right to make you aware of the new page. Also, I thought I might suggest adding the page to your watchlist if you're interested in being a regular contributor to the page. :) ABCface 21:22, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up! I was wondering if this page would ever get created. Looks like all my savegames will come in handy after all :) --Xyzzy 21:28, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

QuestionEdit

Hey Xyzzy! Thank you so much for the images, they’re great! I was wondering – is it possible to re-upload the two square Rikke images in 4:3? Thanks in advance! ☺ --Krusty 10:57, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Done. I thought you might say that! Do you prefer all of the quest images be in 4:3, even if they're only a shot of one npc? -Xyzzy 13:12, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
I think only the first npc pic thats in the top left is 1:1 then all other ones that follow are 4:3 — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 13:15, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Yep, with the exception of the square introductory NPC images, all images should be in 4:3. Thanks again! --Krusty 13:37, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Lore:Pocket Guide to the Empire, 3rd Edition/Sugar and BloodEdit

Hi Xyzzy! I'm pretty sure that the text for the books is taken verbatim and that any spelling mistakes found in actual book text are supposed to stay. That said, I don't see a sic tag, so you may want to add that instead? --—Daniellibus TalkEC 15:46, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

If you're not sure, I'd like to wait until someone who has a copy of this can definitely verify it. Do you have one? --Xyzzy 18:44, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately not --—Daniellibus TalkEC 18:47, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
The wording has been there since the page was created by Benould. Unfortunately, he appears to be completely inactive, so we can't ask him. Let's see if someone reverts me and adds a sic tag, or just verifies it. --Xyzzy 18:55, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan :) --—Daniellibus TalkEC 18:57, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I can verify that it was a typo, and the correct word is "in". However, I'd recommend against fixing spelling errors on book articles - when it doubt, use a sic tag. —Legoless 14:46, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
I shouldn't add a sic tag if I can't verify the mis-spelling myself. Another option would be to bring it up on the talk page, but it seems easier to just "correct" it and have somebody who can verify it revert me and add the sic tag. I know this procedure might possibly add an error to the page, so I'm not dead set on it. What do you think about using a vn or huh tag, instead? --Xyzzy 15:35, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Correcting the spelling is as bad as adding a sic tag. If you see a typo and can't check it, bringing it up on the talkpage is probably the best option. —Legoless 17:45, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

() You can check any books in MW, OB, or SR through CSList. However, I'm not certain what the Pocket Guides would be under, as I can't find them. Vely►Talk►Email 18:09, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

I don't think those books are found ingame. I think they came with the special edition of one of the games. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 18:12, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Ah, I see; that would explain it. I did see Xyzzy put a sic and huh on another word, though, so that applies to the in-game books. Vely►Talk►Email 18:25, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
In-game books (at least for Skyrim) don't need checking, as they're already taken straight from the game data. Just go ahead and add the sic tag. —Legoless 19:10, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Ok. If you're confident that any "errors" for in-game books are verbatim, I will just add sic tags. --Xyzzy 19:38, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

PatrollingEdit

Hey, Xyzzy! I just figured I'd point out the Patrolling Guidelines page and a discussion about Patrolling Tips. A lot of it is more relevant to patrolling content not related to userspace, so you'll have to read through stuff that doesn't really apply to you, but there's some good information there to help out new userpatrollers and patrollers. Have fun! ABCface 00:17, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

new message a moment ago about deleting contentEdit

I deleted a note on specialty gear about the forsworn gauntlets. The needs verification thing had been there for months. Every time I tryied to wear it with another gautlet it never worked. So i saved, invested all my saved perks in smithing and made one of every gauntlet and it didnt work for any of them. So I removed it.

This was the exact note beside forsworn gautlets.

  • Can equip other types of gauntlets over these for added armor and enchantments. [verification needed — Is this true?]

— Unsigned comment by 68.238.152.79 (talk) at 19:54 on 3 July 2012

I'm not sure if its true or not, but I am also unable to wear them with anything else. [edit] oh this is a user talk page, it might be better saying it on the Specialty Gear‎ talk page ^_^ — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 19:58, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
The only reason I reverted the edit was because there was no explanation for the removal of the note. If you have some input for something that needs verification, please add it to the talk page, so that consensus can be reached. --Xyzzy 20:04, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
To the anon: In general, you can give short reasons for removing content in your edit summary, that way people don't assume you're just blanking content you disagree with and revert it. Then if it gets reverted anyway, taking it to the talk page is best.
For the edit in question, I I was the one who added the VN tag to the note in the first place because I didn't find it to be true. So that would be three editors (me, Kimi, the anon) agreeing that we can't do this ourselves, which is probably consensus enough. ABCface 20:47, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Forum like postEdit

All post on all discussion pages are in some way forum like. In part because they are the forums for this wiki. Other violations of the manual of style including posting in fist person in discussion pages is not worth noting, as it is not a source of information for most people using this wiki. — Unsigned comment by 66.8.149.104 (talk) at 09:15 on July 18, 2012

Actually, talk pages have their own rules. "Talk namespaces are where articles are discussed. Every article page on the site has a companion talk page, accessed using the 'discussion' tab. Talk pages are intended to be open forums, where all editors can contribute their opinion about the content or style of the site." Note the bolded--that's the stuff that should be discussed. If you wish to discuss the content or style of the article in a way that will lead to adding, removing, or improving content on the article, go right on ahead! If not, please head to the forums. Vely►t►e 15:56, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
I know that there are a lot of edits to the talk pages that are forum-like, but most of them at least seek to improve the article. Your edit just seemed like pure speculation on an NPC's motives based on real-world standards, which did nothing to contribute to the improvement of the article. --XyzzyTalk 23:18, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Can you check this?Edit

Heys if you have the CK can you check this. I'm on 360 so can only run ingame tests using enemies whos spell/perk lists I know but after probably 50-60 tests now this has yet to not hold trueSkyrim_talk:Block#Elemental_Protection_Applying_First.21 Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 05:43, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

I'd love to, but my computer has never been on very good terms with the CK, and lately has refused to speak to it at all (in other words, the program crashes every time I try to load the data files). Sorry. I hope to build a new system in the next few weeks, so maybe then, if you haven't found someone else. --Xyzzy Talk 05:51, 17 September 2012 (GMT)
ok thanks anyways, if you know anyone who's got CK and wanna pass it along that'd be great. But it definitely seems to be a change in how that perk works. Almost makes sense though since its making it handle Elemental Protection in a similar way to how Block works in comparison to armor. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 05:53, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

Uthgred the UnbrokenEdit

I have tested her over 40 times. He reaction to the PC is the same as encountering a semi hostile NPC in the wild. (The exact same as a giant to be precise.) Get too close, the attack is triggered. Hi; Images:Help Page; RevertEdit

Hi Xyzzy. First time to talk to you directly, but seen lots of your great work on the wiki.

Do you have any opinion on the changes I made here? I know fairly little about graphics editing, but maybe enough to see that the text there had become dated. Also, not knowing that much about graphics editing means that I relied on that page quite a bit when I first started uploading images to the wiki, so I have some perspective on what may be more or less useful to many users. There was a link to an NVIDIA plug-in to help some program/s edit dds files, but it's at least temporarily unavailable as of now, and a quick scan around the web suggests that there's a lot of interest in DDS files these days, many image editing applications seem to be doing one thing or another to facilitate it, and there's a lot of references to dds editing and conversion tools, plug-ins, etc.

Second, I did not look at it in detail, but is it possible that your revert here should be reconsidered? I am not sure that we can say the information/advice is only the editors "pet" tactic (implying, I guess, that it's so specific that it's unlikely to be generally useful). But, I, for example, found the "notes on optimizing" here very useful, and I think similar kinds of advice/information has become sort of standard on the wiki, like the Oblivion Alchemy page, etc. Is there any reason that it is also just someone's "pet method", and should be removed? (Oh no, my bringing this up will probably result in it's removal!!) So, this is not really a challenge, but might you explain your thinking in more detail, get another opinion or two, or consider unreverting? --JR (talk) 06:07, 18 October 2012 (GMT)

The changes you made to the Help:Images pages look pretty good. I'm not familiar with the dds format, as I work exclusively with GIMP to edit my screenshots and save them as jpgs, but your section on those files looks fine to me.
As for your second question, I stand by my revert. My simplified pet method for leveling Smithing is to cruise Whiterun Hold killing deer all night, then return at 8 am to Whiterun, tan their hides, purchase iron ore and ingots from Adrianne, and use those hides and ingots to forge iron daggers. The point is that most players who specifically try to level a skill have a favorite (pet) method of doing this. The method you added to the article was very specific in its steps, which made it, in my opinion, too specific for the article, which should be limited to general guidelines for leveling. If everyone was able to add their favorite leveling method to these skill pages, they would become bloated, repetitive monsters (the pages, not the editors ;)). --Xyzzy Talk 13:50, 18 October 2012 (GMT)
